Quotes

  • The Cigarette Smoking Man : [William B. Davis' favorite line of dialogue from the third season finale, "Talitha Cumi", involved the Cigarette Smoking Man referencing Bill Mulder, when the CSM tells Teena Mulder,]  "He was a good water-skier, your husband. Not as good as I was, but then... that could be said about so many things, couldn't it?"

[Davis was amused and aware that this reference to William Mulder additionally implied that the CSM was a lot better in bed than Mulder had been. The statement was also an inside joke, as at the time the episode was produced Davis was actually a championship level water skier in reality]

  • The Cigarette Smoking Man : Anyone who can appease a man's conscience can take his freedom away from him.

  • Fox Mulder : [Shoves Cigarette Smoking Man up against the wall]  you gonna smoke that?

    [referring to cigarette]

Fox Mulder : or you wanna smoke on this?

    [holds up a gun]

The Cigarette Smoking Man : [mockingly]  are you giving me a choice?

Fox Mulder : [Mulder slaps the cigarette out of his mouth]  I'd shoot you right here except they'd probably be able to save you!

The Cigarette Smoking Man : Do it... do it, Agent Mulder.

Fox Mulder : Or maybe I'll just put a bullet in your brain so you'll be bedridden for the rest of your life like my mother!

The Cigarette Smoking Man : [worriedly]  how is she?

Fox Mulder : What do you care?

The Cigarette Smoking Man : I've known her since before you were born... Fox.

  • The Cigarette Smoking Man : Men can never be free, because they're weak, corrupt, worthless... and restless. The people believe in authority. They've grown tired of waiting for miracle or mystery. Science is their religion - no greater explanation exists for them! They must never believe any differently if the project is to go forward.

  • Jeremiah Smith : You're wrong.

The Cigarette Smoking Man : [smiling coldly]  Oh, am I?

Jeremiah Smith : ...You're dying of lung cancer.

The Cigarette Smoking Man : [looking confused and shocked]  ... That's a lie.

Jeremiah Smith : [smirking]  You think it's a lie.

  • [Jeremiah Smith has transformed into William Mulder]

William Mulder : And if you can't appease their conscience, you kill them. But you can't kill them all, you can't kill their love, which is what makes them who they are, makes them better than us, better than you.

The Cigarette Smoking Man : You talk! I'm not one of you!

William Mulder : No, all you want is to be a part of it, to be one of the commandants when the process begins.
