More of Xena's past told. Underwhelming brother. Villain was lame. The great breast dagger moment.

Warning: Spoilers
Xena encounters the soldiers of Cortese, the man responsible for attacking her village all those years ago. Turns out her older brother, Toris, is also after Cortese. The two have a shaky family reunion.

I don't know if it was the actor and the way he delivered his lines or the character, and the way he was written, or both, but Toris was underwhelming. He just came off as weak and whiny. I didn't like him at all. I feel like they were trying to make him almost like a male Xena only not as smart, and not as good a fighter. A weak shadow of what she is, and it didn't work. Despite the dark hair and high cheekbone make-up, to try and make him resemble Xena.

Turns out all those years ago when Cortese attacked, instead of making a stand and fighting like Xena and her younger bro, Lyceus, and other villagers, he ran away and headed for the hills with other villagers. So he feels like a coward and wants to murder Cortese. Xena is trying to get it through to him that yes, Cortese needs to be brought to justice but not murdered by him. She doesn't want him to become like she was in her dark past.

Cortese was lame af. It's not very believable that this guy could lead and be a scary warlord. He says he created Xena. Well, he certainly got the ball rolling, leading Xena to become a full-on warrior, which in turn led her to eventually become a warlord/pirate. But it was really Caesar as we see later in the richly done episode 'Destiny' in season two that turned her evil, and that was the beginning of her becoming more powerful and dangerous.

The saving grace of this episode are the action scenes, the interactions between Xena and Gabrielle, and Xena and Gabs in separate scenes. Thank goodness for these two actresses. Otherwise, this episode would be an absolute lemon. The action scenes were great and there were a few comedic scenes thanks to Gabrielle. We learn more about Xena's past and how it started that she became a warlord. In fact, having Xena describe what happened to Gabrielle, was more compelling than seeing either Cortese or Toris and those interactions.

In one scene Xena feigns being captured by Toris and turned over to Cortese's men where she is placed in a tent alone. Her hands are tied behind her back and she sort of breathes and squeezes to force her breast dagger to pop out into the air and drops into her hands so she can free herself. Well, this makes me laugh every time I see this episode. Xena does indeed have many skills!

Toris was cringeworthy. Felt like even Xena didn't like him much. Is it any wonder we never saw this guy again, or that his name was never mentioned again? Cortese was lame, especially as the man who got the ball rolling to create Xena the warrior. There was still some good stuff in this episode as I mentioned above. 7/10.

Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface20204 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A warlord is waging a campaign of death and terror against innocent villagers. However, this is no ordinary warlord. He is Cortese, the man who "made" Xena into a warrior. To add to the drama, Xena is joined in her battle against Cortese by someone who was once very close to her back many years ago.

SYNOPSIS

Xena and Gabrielle save a village from marauders who are terrorizing innocent folk. The bad guys run off, but Xena recognizes the unique masks that they wore as those worn by followers of Cortese. Unfortunately, the local king's men are too few to provide complete defense to the people, and they're not allowed to pursue the bandits into the woods. Cortese attacked Xena's village many years ago, and this incident caused Xena to become a warrior in the hopes of exacting revenge. What Xena didn't notice is that a soldier from Cortese's group recognized her. He's kinda new in the gang, so he couldn't approach Cortese himself to inform him that Xena was in the area. Instead he had to pass word onto Cortese's lieutenant Malik, an unsavory lowlife soldier. While Xena and Gabrielle are making camp, they're approached by a sole masked minion of Cortese. It's the one who recognized Xena earlier, and he reveals himself as Toris, Xena's long lost brother.

Toris tells Xena that he has joined Cortese's band with the hopes of getting close to the warrior in order to kill him as revenge for their brother's death. He wants Xena to get lost since this is a pretty dangerous mission. As one can tell, he's be estranged for a long time and doesn't really know the Xena of today. They devise a plan where he'll take Xena in as a prisoner and then hopefully they'll get close to Cortese. However, creep Malik wants to take Xena in for himself, but of course she has no problem escaping. Xena gets back to camp with Toris and Gabrielle, but then Toris runs off on his own. When Xena catches up to him he's all tied up, and it's clearly a trap. The two escape and go to the local castle. They inform the officer on duty that that the king has a traitor in his court giving info to Cortese. The guard laughs and leaves, but then the king reveals himself. It's Cortese! He has been playing both king and warlord, a perfect scheme where he can enjoy the best of both worlds. They are detained, and the guard tells them that the kings wants them dead, but he'll make it easy for them if they give up the identity of Cortese.

Xena and Toris escape, and they're in pursuit of Cortese on the castle grounds. Xena has correctly concluded that Cortese uses carrier pigeons to send messages to his gang of thugs based in the woods when he's in the castle. She uses them to send a message directing the gang to attack the castle. Gabrielle arrives since she had heard that Xena was captured in the castle. Xena fights a battle, but insists that none of the innocent soldiers get killed by Toris. They capture Cortese, and Xena says that Toris can kill him if he wants, but it will not bring about the sense of justice that he seeks. Killing only made Xena into a bad person, and that is something that she greatly rejects. Toris doesn't murder Cortese, and order is restored to the region. Toris is off to travel and visit their mother, and Xena asks him to tell her that he recently saw her.

NOTES

Xena's rage from injustices had once turned her into a monster, and she doesn't want such anger to impact other innocent people like Toris. Gabrielle is getting very good with her battle staff.

Enter: Toris, Cortese

Death Mask
Prismark1027 September 2019
Xena never mentioned her older brother before but this episode introduces Toris, her older brother.

Toris is not as brave as Xena. When their village was attacked some years ago by the warlord Cortese, Xena took a stand as Toris fled with the other villagers. Toris blames Xena for the death of their younger brother.

It is an episode that deals with estranged siblings, catching arrows and going after Cortese who is a cunning conniver who also masquerades as the king.

Toris wants to take revenge on Cortese but Xena wants to stop him being a cold blooded killer.

The episode adds some depth to Xena by bringing in family relationships, revealing something from her past and what led Xena to her journey.
