The screenplay by Carrie Fisher was adapted into the young adult novel 'Young Indiana Jones # 1: The Mata Hari Affair' by James Luceno, together with Jonathan Hensleigh's screenplay for Verdun, September 1916 (1992)
In an interview published in Star Wars Insider # 250 (September 2012), producer Rick McCallum reveals that they originally cast a Dutch actress to play the role of Mata Hari (who was born in Friesland, the Netherlands). This actress was a friend of Linda Hamilton and joined her in her physical workouts preparing for Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) in L.A. Six month later, when they were about to begin production on this installment, the actress had put on so much muscle that she could no longer play the role. Writer Carrie Fisher joined the production in Prague to work with the newly recast actress, Domiziana Giordano.

According to assistant sound editor Laird M. Malamed, who saw unedited footage, Sean Patrick Flanery (Young Indy) and Domiziana Giordano (Mata Hari) did not get along at all on set.
In 1999 Lucasfilm announced "Paris, October 1916 to be the second half of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Demons of Deception (1999), the first half being Verdun, September 1916 (1992). Chapter 9 was finally released on disc 2 of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume Two on December 18, 2007.
