Great, but only for one reason.

(Ranking every episode of Futurama #4) This episode is hilarious, but there is only one reason for that, Zapp Brannigan is introduced. He is one of my favorite characters and the other fans definitely love him as well. Honestly I don't even think this episode is all that memorable, it just introduces such a good character that is so quotable that some people forget this episode otherwise isn't the greatest thing of all time. This is still an above average episode, but it is the first episode that I thought was slightly overrated. Still great though, I mean its Futurama.

Here Comes the Zapper

This episode is notable for introducing us to Zapp Brannigan, his put upon manservant Kif & the insatiable Nibbler.

I can't believe I still remember so many of these lines. It's hard to judge it objectively, as I can't go back and see these episodes with fresh eyes - therefore a lot of the jokes I see coming.

The character of Zapp is great but I don't think he's at his funniest here - nor is Kif with his pathetic sighing. Zapp is a very one note character and we spend a huge amount of time listening to his pompous pronouncements.

It's definitely a solid episode- I just didn't find myself laughing that much upon rewatch. I don't know if it's because I've heard the lines before or because they're not uproariously funny. More of a wry smile than laugh out loud funny.

Under-rated

It currently only has an 8.3, but this is the episode that introduces Captain Kirk satire Zapp Brannigan and let's face it, this episode shows exactly why he is a memorable and popular character. He is frankly at his best. "Kif, I have made it with a woman. Notify the men." and "Kif. In the game of chess, you can never let your adversary see your pieces." and who can forget the Russian mentality ingrained in "You see, Killbots have a preset kill limit. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own men at them, until they reached their limit and shutdown." There are so many quotable moments from this episode, and you introduce Zapp, Kif, and Nibbler. Does it have the plot-line of some of the best episodes, but this episode is a great example of Futurama humor, and no true Futurama fan will not be able to quote lines from this episode.

Leela meets The Zapper!
Tweekums24 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As the episode opens Leela is feeling lonely; most men seem to be put off by her one eye and those that are interested don't come up to her high standards. It looks as if her situation might take a turn for the better when she and the crew go on a rescue mission to save the animals of the doomed planet of Vergon 6 and seek help from the legendary war hero Zapp Brannigan. Leela is keen to meet him... right up until the moment she does meet him; Zapp is an egotistical buffoon with a velour fetish. He refuses to help and has Leela, Fry and Bender thrown in the brig. Leela is later invited to his room where he hopes to seduce her with his sham-pag-un (champagne) and velour sheets. She is not impressed but feels sorry for him when he breaks down and cries! Having experienced 'Brannigan's love Leela and the crew are allowed to continue to Vergon 6 where they round up all the animals on their list plus a cute little creature Leela dubs Nibbler.

To my mind this was the best episode since the pilot; this is largely due to Zapp and his put upon lieutenant, Kiff Kroker; the combination of Zapp's enormous ego and Kiff's world weary disdain for his boss is great. The scenes between Leela and Zapp was also great; it was shocking with a woman with Leela's high standards would end up spending the night... and judging by his reaction it didn't sound as if many women did! There was a fun double twist involving Nibbler; who would have guessed he had such a ravenous appetite or that he excreted spaceship fuel?! People who enjoyed this episode will be pleased to hear that Zapp will become a semi-regular character... others may be horrified!
