Wow, season two starts out with a bang!
planktonrules6 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The first several episodes of season two are among the very best of the "Daria" series. One after another are pure gold and it sure starts off well with "Arts 'n' Crass".

Jane and Daria are convinced to enter a poster for a district contest. Jane does the art and Daria provides the poem. However, their statement about bulimia and the shallowness of the pursuit of attractiveness is simply too intelligent for the idiots in charge of judging the contest. Mr. O'Neill and Ms. Li are simply appalled by the poem about puking--totally ignoring the message behind it. They also are looking for a poster with a superficial and happy message--two things you will never imagine happening with anything associated with Daria and Jane! However, when the girls refuse to allow their poster to be entered, Ms. Li way oversteps her authority--and so it's up to the Terminator (Helen) to come to the rescue! This is a great episode and I sure loved Daria and Jane's brilliant poster. I also loved Daria's mom coming to the rescue--this is one time when she is simply great. Extremely intelligently written--this one is not only brilliant but has several great messages about popularity, conformity, mediocrity and the abuse of authority. A must-see!

Daria and Jane will not be censored!
Tweekums26 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When students are invited to take part in an art competition to create a picture that epitomises life as a student at the dawn if the new millennium Daria and Jane aren't keen to enter but as Jane is artistic the art teacher really wants her to enter. After gorging on pizza the two girls come up with an idea and when Mr. O'Neill sees it he is immediately impressed at the image of a beautiful girl looking into a mirror... his delight turns to horror when though when he reads the poem underneath which makes it clear that the girl is meant to bulimic and vomits her dinner every day! He and Principal Ms Li want to enter the picture but insist that the girls change the wording to something more uplifting. They refuse but the picture is changed anyway; they won't stand for it so deface the picture. Ms Li is furious and calls their parents which is a big mistake given that Daria's mother is a high powered lawyer who can clearly see who was really in the wrong.

This was a great opening to the second season; it had a solid story and a strong message about censorship and, as the picture showed, the extremes which some youngsters are driven to feel that they fit in. The seriousness doesn't mean it wasn't funny though; there was plenty to laugh at... Trent's comment on being woken was laugh out loud funny and Brittany's pictures that completely missed the point she was trying to make were chuckle worthy to name just two parts. If this opening episode is an indication of how good this season is going to be we are in for some good ones!
