Tissues Will be Needed
lambsarepets29 June 2007
This episode was pure genius. Not only did make me cry, which is something very hard an animated series can do, but it showed some insight to the characters of our beloved Futurama. Clever writing and great plot twists helped achieve a great episode. Quite possibly the greatest episode, just ahead of "Jurassic Bark." Upon watching this episode, people will realize what genius Futurama really is, and the sad fact that it was canceled brings even more morose. But anyway, do yourself a favor and watch this episode, it is the best. Kudos to Mr. Groening and Mr. Cohen for creating this incredible series which such moving and touching episodes.

Bring a box of tissues while your at it.

Tears me up each time
Foxbarking7 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I am not sure I can say anything about this great episode than anyone else has ever said. It's wonderful seeing all these references to the 1980's. Any show that can still mention break dancing is fun for me.

But the ending of this episode may be one of the most amazing endings to a television program ever. I have seen it dozens of times, but I cry every single time.

Too often shows don't focus on love and feelings. Fry's family is often also shown as being flippant and not caring about him very much. Too often we are led to believe brothers are always adversaries. This episode shows that despite all of that, a brother can be the greatest thing in the world. You'll love this episode, just make sure you have a tissue box close because you will need it.

Best episode of Futurama
emacheen1717 April 2009
Without question, this episode is the best Futurama episode to date. And this is after watching every season multiple times. I would challenge any viewer to dispute the excellence of this episode.

The emotional ties to Fry's past and family, and the surprise ending make this some of the best, and most insightful, writings in a TV series.

Writing like this makes me wonder why anyone would ever cancel Futurama. Literary techniques and blatant references to certain films show the true quality of Matt Groening. I am so pleased they brought the show back. Keep up the excellent writing Matt, we all look forward to the continuance of the show!

Possibly the best episode in the series
jphayman20 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Very rarely do we ever go into a character's past, but whenever we do, it's a rewarding experience. This episode managed to be touching without losing the comedy that makes Futurama Futurama.

The episode is very well put together with scenes from Fry's 20th century life interspersed throughout the 31st century setting. We follow Fry growing up with his older brother Yancy, and the struggles he endured.

What makes this episode great is that, really for the first time in the series, the viewer finally gets a feeling for who Fry was and who Fry is. The episode gives Fry another dimension, especially in the ending. We have a better understanding of what Fry's home life was like, and why Fry was thrilled to be in the future with a fresh start in the first place.

The episode also proceeds such that the viewer can't actually guess how the episode will resolve. We spend the entire episode believing in one reality, and then at the end of the episode, the true reality throws us off, and gives a feeling of warmth and heart that makes Futurama different from every other cartoon out there.

Everything about this episode is good.

One of the greatest episodes in Futurama
biochill22 November 2009
There are some Futurama episodes which are not so good, but this one is really outstandingly well done. Much was said in other comments, I cannot really add new things.

One can see quite some references to the 80's, apparently Mr. Groening or Mr. Cohen tried to place good memories there. Have to say I am also a child of the 80's.

The appearance of the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds is really well placed, too. (I hope the sole mentioning of it is not a spoiler, since it's mentioned already on its IMDb page. Didn't say where it is played though!)

Obviously fans will love this episode
stupidstudios7 September 2007
I am a giant fan of the series I started watching the episodes from first to the end once I saw the show when I did this was a episode that was never on TV and I didn't own the 3rd season DVD. But when I FINALLY saw this I thought it was the best episode of the show and I honestly cried at the end.

The End is a giant Surprise of what happens (I won't tell if you haven't seen) and the ending is just beyond the best ending of any series or TV show I've seen it will leave you wanting more and more of this show.

I also though that the cast of Futurama is at their best in this episode, Why? Because of how good they can be funny and yet at a lot of times be good at sad scenes.

2019 and nothing has changed
fifim1116 March 2019
Years after I originally watched this show, I've come back to rewatch only to find it's held up pretty well. Episodes like the luck of the Fryrish as well as other episodes like Leela's homeworld are filled with so much heart I could rewatch over and over again. These episodes are what set Futurama apart from other animated adult shows.

Best Futurama episode of all time
shabs-3484026 October 2015
If someone was to ask you to describe Futurama in one word, you'd most likely say 'amusing' or 'hilarious' but not 'sad'. The true reality is that due to Fry's life and the circumstances he ended up in future, he left behind his family which inevitably leads to times where he cannot forget about his past hence causes emotional scenes. This episode is one of them. As we look back at Fry's childhood and his relationship with his brother, we realize how upsetting it must have been for Fry. The way this episode was produced was fantastic and I never thought it would but Futurama nearly brought a tear to my eye. The best Futurama episode for me, definitely worth a watch along with some tissues

Fry searches for his lost luck
Tweekums10 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After an unsuccessful trip to the racetrack Fry ponders his bad luck and things back to a time when things were different; a time when he had all the luck; the time after he found a seven leaved clover. As we see flashbacks of that luckier time we see how his elder brother Yancy was jealous of him and was constantly copying his ideas. When Fry decides to go searching Old New York for his clover he is shocked to discover that his brother took it; not only that he did everything Fry had dreamt of doing; he was the first man on Mars, a rock star and the ultimate insult was that he'd stolen Philip J. Fry's name! That was the final insult... now, more determined than ever, he goes to did up his brother's remains to find the clover; but when he does he learns that he was wrong about his brother.

This is a classic episode; not just because of the usual supply of great jokes but because of the tear jerker ending; this ending is particularly good because it is unexpected and poignant; I certainly didn't expect to find tears welling up but they did! It was great to learn a bit more about Fry's past and see his family; his father was particularly funny with his constant worry about communists and the bomb!

Saw the ratings and I was like... WTF!! But then...
GraXXoR4 April 2022
...the show ended and I realised exactly why this episode maxed out the lovometer.

I cannot possibly know when you watched this episode, but if you are here to leave a comment, then it's likely because like many, you found this to be the most remarkably (completely unexpectedly) heartwarming feel-good episode of TV you've seen in the last 12 months!

This is definitely the first (of many) amazing episodes of the series. It not only builds our main characters history but adds a lot of heart and surprisingly sweet moments.

does anyone see the loophole to this whole storyline? or just me
andrewnobody7 June 2015
OK first of all good episode just barely watched on Netflix, but the only thing that was really strange was that when Fry was reminiscing about his past about growing up with his brother and how he accomplished a few things that made his older brother jealous. Pretty much from what it seems the whole theme was that he got accidentally frozen when he was a child. Which doesn't quite compute with the first episode which he was frozen when he was an adult. So you see the flaw here? Like he missed his whole childhood and his brother going to prom with his future wife when he actually did grew up with his brother til he was frozen in 1999....... I know it's just a cartoon show but yeah just wanted to point that out, thou gg t it was funny.

Best episode of the series

Compare to "Jurassic Bark", this one is a lot better. The jokes are a lot funnier than Jurassic Bark. Jurassic Bark is a too serious episode for my liking. This episode is funny, entertaining, and has a emotional moment. I don't hate the other. In my opinion, Jurassic Bark 2nd, The Luck Of The Fryrish 1st.

The One With The Seven-Leaf Clover...
taylorkingston8 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode. It's so good. I love that we got to sneak into the past, and find more out about Fry, and his family.

In this episode, Fry goes on a quest in the sewer to Old New York to find his lucky seven- leaf clover. He becomes convinced that his brother stole it after Fry was frozen, and then took over his identity. This in fact, was not the case. And Fry learns the heartwarming story of what really happened, and how his absence really effected his family. This is a great episode, and I'm not going to spoil it by saying what happens.

Title gag: Broadcast simultaneously one year in the future.

Best part of this episode: Everything.

Worst part of this episode: Nothing in particular.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking Ridonkulous.

top 2 best episodes of futurama
reidyq29 September 2021
May be number 1 but its hard to say when there are so many episodes, funnier, and an overall better story than Jurassic Bark. For me stuff like Game Of Tones, Leela's Home World, Jurassic Bark, and Lethal Inspection are more emotional, but its unbelievable how funny yet sad this episode is, 10/10 easy.

I cried at the end
princessstrickland215 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Heartwarming, memorable and even sad in some points. I think, as well the dog episode, this is one of the best episodes that explains about Fry's life when he was young. Having an older brother who wasn't always nice to him, finding out that Fry had a seven leaf clover that he kept hidden from his brother. Trying to find it, he realizes that his brother took it, changing his identity and going to Mars. Or so he thinks. It seems his brother named his own son after him, to carry on the spirit. Btw: amazing how it ends with "don't you forget about me " great episode

Greatest Episode Ever
tiotomtom20 February 2017
This episode is great and better than Jurassic Bark. The best episode of Futurama. Watch it! Please give this episode a 10 out of 10. I want this episode to be number 1 in Futurama in the IMDb website. Jurassic Bark had the idea from Hitachi. This was super creative and fun. This episode actually made me cry.

best episode of the series along with jurassic bark
marioreds-404533 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First off, if you haven't watched this episode yet, do yourself a favour and watch it, before reading the reviews. A recurring theme in futurama is the contrast between what fry thinks the people (and the dog) around him felt about him, and what they actually felt. He is convinced that they cared very little about him, so much so that this is one of the reasons why he's relieved when he learns he is being frozen for a thousand years: everyone who knew him is now dead. We are lead to believe for several episodes that he's right in thinking so, but as the series progresses we gradually learn how wrong his perception was. The contrast is shown beautifully in this episode where, almost up until the end, we are offered his point of view, his rightful (based on his assumptions) indignation, only to learn that the alter ego wasn't his jealous brother stealing his life, dreams and name, but in fact his nephew, his brother's son, named after him "to carry on his spirit". Very beautifully written. On a side note, the joke on the article "the" (including bender's answer) is also very on point because it really tells the viewer the level of obsession fry had reached.
