Sand in your Buns Sing-a-long

This is a step up from the first episode. Ripped Pants would be 10/10, bubble stand maybe 8/10 - so 9/10 overall.

The humour in Ripped Pants is so endearing. This is not your average cartoon. Its cleverness is on another level. Spongebob is a very insecure sponge who latches onto a running gag as a way to impress his peers. It Backfires and becomes stale fast. He regroups with a bunch of outcasts for a triumphant sing-a-long about ostracism. It's just great and bonkers.

Bubble Stand is good too but it gets overshadowed by the superior Ripped Pants. Sorry Squidward.

at first glance it's pure silliness, but beneath the surface it's pretty damn clever

BubbleStand-almost every line of dialogue in this one is hilarious. It is another of those episodes that has an almost perfect blend of a few different styles of humor. It's got moments are absurd and surreal, others that are just plain witty, and others that are just classic physical comedy! It's a fun, funny, and fantastic addition to an already amazing first season! Ripped Pants-the plot to this one is unbelievably stupid, and this set up could have easily led to a barrage of immature jokes, but instead it's one of the show's most side splitting and (ironically) mature episodes. It has great morals as well as a great sense of humor.

How?

Warning: Spoilers
How can two extremely stupid plot lines be turned into two of the greatest SpongeBob episodes ever? To find out, you have to watch these.

"Bubblestand" SpongeBob is bored on a bright and shiny day. He begins building something. It turns out to be a "Bubblestand" you can blow bubbles for a quarter. Patrick is the first customer, but he can't do it. So he gets lessons from SpongeBob (for a quarter) and he shows Patrick the "technique" to bubble-blowing. Squidward tries this and blows a giant bubble that (spoilers) carries his house into the sky. A hilarious episode that had me in stitches. 10/10 "Ripped Pants" SpongeBob rips his pants while he's lifting weights with Sandy and Larry (who appears for the first time in this episode). Everyone thinks it's hilarious so he keeps doing it. Eventually, he goes too far and (spoilers again) sings the song "Ripped Pants," which is one of the show's great musical numbers. 10/10 The whole episode: 10/10

The best episode ever.SPOILERS
VeeryGirl14 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is by far the very best episode of Spongebob ever.

Bubblestand is about Spongebob and Patrick blowing bubbles. The bubble stand bubbles cost 25 cents. Squidward does not like that the bubbles cost 25 cents. Spongebob says you need to do a special moves to blow bubbles. Squidward does not do the special moves. Squidward doesn't make a perfect bubble. But then Squidward does the special moves. Squidward makes a perfect bubble. He floats away.

Ripped Pants is about Spongebob and Sandy go to the Goo Lagoon. Then Spongebob pretends to be other people in Bikini Bottom. Then Spongebob rips his pants. He becomes popular because of it. Then he pretends to drown and he becomes hated. Then he meets other losers on the beach. Then they sing a song.

This episode is great, and I loved the Ripped Pants song.

Another timeless duo

Warning: Spoilers
Bubblestand - This is one of my personal favorites. Spongebob decides to run - you guessed it - a bubblestand, where Spongebob gives bubble blowing lessons. Patrick and Squidward eventually get lessons to varying results. This episode takes a simple concept and turns it into laugh-per-minute gags, quotable lines a-plenty, and just some good, clean fun. The best part? Easy. "Now it's time to bring it around town!" (9/10)

Ripped Pants - This one's a timeless classic. Spongebob and Sandy are enjoying a day at the beach when Spongebob accidentally rips his pants while trying to show off to everyone. He takes this gag and runs it into the ground and he gets what's coming to him afterwards. This episode teaches a good lesson that I'm sure most modern shows can learn from: Just because a joke is funny once, doesn't mean it's ALWAYS funny. While it's not the most quotable episode, it's still a fun episode with a great message. Oh yeah, it's got a great song, too! (9/10)

Overall - Even after all these years, it's remarkable how well these two hold up - It's the second episode, too. This has definitely earned the title of "timeless". This episode's a win for me!

Score: 9 + 9 = 18/20 -> 9/10 Would highly recommend.

Ripped Pants is one of my favourite SpongeBob episodes
iratecartoons10 April 2021
Ripped Pants - 10/10

Bubblestand - 7/10

Averaging these out becomes 8.5.

Ripped Pants is one of my favourite episodes of SpongeBob, and it has one of the best SpongeBob songs in it. Bubblestand is a good episode too, just not anywhere as good as Ripped Pants.

HAHAHA, IT'S A GIRAFFE

BubbleStand. We really see Squidward's character fleshing out here. He is so arrogant yet he secretly LOVES bubbles. The bubble art is so impressive for this show so early on; it's fantastic! Another great thing is the technique for the bubble blowing, it's so memorable and something I always quote if I'm using bubbles. Another one also filled with comedy.

9.7/10

Ripped Pants. Is it overrated? Maybe. It's not top 10 material but still this is a GREAT moral. For some reason, this show gets flack for dumbing down kids. LOOK AT THIS! It is comedic AND entertaining and has a good moral; *chefs kiss*

9.1/10.

Talk about an improvement
aspieducklover-023048 February 2023
Episode 2 is such a massive improvement over the first episode in so many ways.

Bubblestand (8) Bubblestand is such a charming episode. The visuals are great, the story is simple yet extremely effective, and the chemistry between the main characters is wonderful and natural. The "it's a giraffe" joke will always be a classic.

Ripped pants (9) Ripped pants is a terrible idea turned into a fantastic episode. The story relies on a joke that has an incredible conclusion just after it wears out it's welcome. The visual gags and dialogue are top notch and there are some genuinely sweet moments that lend into a well-earned and wholesome ending with a positive message. Spongebob goes through some character development in just ten minutes and cements himself as a cartoon icon with a banger of a song.

Pretty good!

Warning: Spoilers
Bubblestand isn't the best or funniest episode of all time or anything, but it's a good time. Everyone knows the best part is "Bring it around town!" Very iconic and hilarious. The rest of the episode isn't stellar but it's quite funny and is worth a watch.

Ripped Pants is a weird but surprisingly really good episode. It's a bizarre concept but it ends being really funny and possibly relatable when SpongeBob acts like a fool to get his friends' attention, and it's topped off by the best part of the episode, the amazing song that's really catchy with a great moral. Overall, it's a great episode with a lot of love about it.

Wondrous and funny/fantastically heartfelt and funny

Warning: Spoilers
Bubblestand is pretty great. The childlike wonder in blowing the bubbles, and the hilarity of Spongebob and Patrick's friendship and Squidward's perfectionism is amazing. Only thing is it's fairly short. 4/5./ I absolutely love Ripped Pants. So much thought clearly went into this episode, and I think we can all relate to taking things too far for attention and losing ourselves when we used to be less mature. The charm in Spongebob's story is unbelievable, a step above from what I've seen so far, despite the all around charm pervasive in every episode. I loved the song. I loved the message. I loved the humor.

All around, it was fantastic. I feel like the only downside is that Bubblestand was a bit less in its concept, despite true increidble execution. 9/10 at least.

Another awesome episode of the awesome cartoon
UltimateGoblin61621 July 2023
Well, it might look like I throw tens like it doesn't matter for me, but it does matter and there for sure will be tons of ratings below 5 for most of the future episodes from me... For now I really want to enjoy the show when it was still good.

This "BubbleStand" episode is ultra funny and many future Squidward series used the same scenario. Remember "Skill Crane"? It's almost 100% the same: Squidward sees something he finds weird, he decides to try that, because it seems too easy for him and he thinks he can't not be good at everything, he loses and then spends a lot of money to actually make a successful attempt and raise his self-esteem, then he finally makes it (with the help of SpongeBob, of course) and then his pride just clouds his mind, but it the end it backfires. In this episode it was especially funny, because Squidward's self-esteem was boosted SOOO well, that he even started to play his clarinet like a pro! I never noticed that as a kid, but now it makes it even better for me.

And it's not only "Skill Crane" that was inspired by this episode. There are also those stories with piece of paper, cardboard box and etc etc etc. These Squidward episodes are really my all-time favourite and I can watch them forever - they never get old even seeing the similarity between them. So yeah, BubbleStand is 100% iconic for me. It nails Squidward as a personality like nothing else.

"Ripped Pants" isn't any worse at all. It introduces Goo Lagoon and new characters like Larry the Lobster. To be honest, I never was a fan of Larry, he's kinda boring, but works fine as a side character like here. And the message of the story is really good - know when your joke becomes too old. The creators of the modern SpongeBob episodes should remember this episode and learn this idea... Add to this a really memorable song (I swear I had goosebumps for the whole song, that's how nostalgic and iconic it turned out to be for me) and you'll get an absolutely perfect SpongeBob episode. God, I remember laughing at the "play dead" joke. It's not that hilarious when you saw the episode for a few million times, but I can't not mention it.

Yeah, I really love how Steven Hillenburg was building his SpongeBob world brick by brick, episode by episode, adding more depth to the existed characters and introducing some new ones. I mean, all the side characters add some variety to the series and each of them got some unique style of the stories they are involved in.

BubbleStand/Ripped Pants
redzero18 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 of SpongeBob SquarePants contains some of the finest episodes in Television history. Despite not being as polished visually as the later seasons (it was made from 1999-2000, to be fair), the humor, the characters, the stories, and the quotable moments, or in other words, what makes SpongeBob SquarePants my favorite cartoon ever made, are at its peak in Season 1, and by extension Seasons 2 and 3. BubbleStand and Ripped Pants, despite airing so early in the series, do a surprisingly good job at displaying these aforementioned defining traits, as they have an exceptional amount of quotable lines, quality jokes, and also introduce a staple character. Additionally, in the case of Ripped Pants, it teaches quite a valuable lesson (and has a pretty killer tune at the end).

First of note are the quotable lines. Easily the most notable line in the Episode(s) is the Technique from BubbleStand. Despite being repeated three times over the course of the episode, it never loses steam, personally. As for quotability? It's most certainly present, despite being such a long quote. The "bring it around town" part is especially quotable. Ripped Pants isn't as quotable, however. The most iconic quote is most likely Larry saying, "Observe". Despite the lack of quotable lines in Ripped Pants, it more than makes up for it in the joke category.

In opposition to the amount of quotable lines, BubbleStand is relatively dry in the field of jokes. Of course, there are still jokes, but not as many. My favorite of which is SpongeBob noting how peaceful of a day it is in the Bikini Bottom, then proceeding to conduct noisy construction work a few seconds later. BubbleStand has jokes, of course, but just as Ripped Pants focuses more on jokes than quotable lines, BubbleStand clearly is more notable for its quotable lines. Speaking of Ripped Pants, and jokes, Ripped Pants has some exceptional ones. In fact, laughter is the motivating force for the story of the episode. The start of the episode has a flurry of impressions from SpongeBob, that I really enjoy. Overall, Ripped Pants is a lot more humorous, but both episodes excel in being funny, one way or another.

Ripped Pants also introduces a new staple character! It's not a shock, being that it's the second episode of the series, but the introduction of Larry was a graceful one, being a well-meaning bodybuilding lobster. His role is quite minor in this episode, but it's still appreciated nonetheless.

Ripped Pants also has a lesson! Bubblestand is, admittedly, a filler episode, but a great one at that. Ripped Pants, as far as I'm concerned, isn't a filler episode. The lesson, despite being quite simple, is a good one, especially for the target child audience of the show. As the lyric from Ripped Pants states, "Be true to yourself". The ability to convey a message without sounding preachy is something that SpongeBob SquarePants, as a show, does quite well, and that is no different in Ripped Pants.

In conclusion, despite the lack of the character roster of later seasons, and the simplicity of the art style, and stories, BubbleStand and Ripped Pants prove to be some of the most enjoyable episodes of Season One, and a great next step for the show.
