Episode 14: SB-129/Karate Choppers
TVGuy318 June 2010
These two episodes are very good and are some of the best of season 1.

"SB-129" Squidward tries to get away from SpongeBob and Patrick, and he accidentally freezes himself and you kind of have to watch the rest to get it. It's a really funny episode overall especially the can opener gag. 9.5/10

"Karate Choppers" SpongeBob and Sandy are dueling each other in karate 24/7, and it starts affecting SpongeBob's work and Mr. Krabs threatens to fire him. This episode was very funny. It had great gags like the talking hot sauce and the ending is pretty good too. 9.5/10 Whole Episode: 9.5/10

FUUUUUUTURE or Karate

Warning: Spoilers
SB-129 - I absolutely love this episode to death, and it's easily my favorite of Season 1. Squidward tries getting away from Spongebob and Patrick and accidentally locks himself in the freezer. Somehow, no one notices and we jump to 2000 years later, as Squidward has been cryogenically frozen! He travels through time, going to the past, getting lost in time, and then eventually ending up right back where he started. It's endlessly quotable, has plenty of great gags, it nails Squidward's character, and I never get tired of seeing it. I almost never click away! (10/10)

Karate Choppers - "I love karate!" "I love ka-ra-te!" "I love money-ey!" "I hate all of you." That never gets old. In this episode, Spongebob and Sandy's favorite past time, karate, is established. They play it so much that it threatens Spongebob's job, and eventually they have to find something else to do...only to go right back to it. Once again, this episode is immensely quotable and a ton of fun. Plus, there's actual stakes here! That always makes things interesting and is refreshing to see in a show where it's usually just comedic antics. (9/10)

Overall - What can I say? I'm floored. Two undisputed classics back to back in one 30-minute slot. What's especially impressive is that this is Season 1! It has no right to be this good. But it is, and I love it for that.

Score: 10 + 9 = 19/20 -> 9.5/10 Near perfection! Would highly recommend.

An-129 was a great ep, could watch it over and over again. Anything sci-fi sponge-bob is great!

The karate ep was good, good of been better. Lacked a bit of comedy. But all in all good ep.

SB-129 Explores Nihilism?? / Karate Choppers cool episode about spongebob being awkward cause he doesn't like Karate i think
lennydoggo4 August 2023
Season 2 episode 6 "squidville" has a synonymous message for the episode but in different settings. Squidward dislikes spongebob and patrick's presence so much that he leaves forever in a time machine that goes to the past then future! But spongebob and patrick keep coming back! He cant escape them in different timelines either so messes with a time machine and it breaks, making him stuck in a empty, all white place where "alone" is chanted, driving squidward into a state of panic, fear, and feeling danger. This is what it really means to be alone. It practically poses the idea of nihilism because squidward is fed up with reality in the beginning of the episode. Goes to show how "a perfect escape" is very imperfect. He luckily makes his way back to bikini bottom where he immediately sees spongebob and patrick when he opens the door of the time machine. He would usually find their greeting "annoying." but this time, he cant find himself to be agitated and i believe he hugs them. Haven't watched in a little but the first half of this episode SB-129 is in my top 5 spongebob episodes. Karate choppers is cool too tho!!!! Spongebob is put on the spot by sandy to do karate with her and a bunch of stuff happens.

SB-129 - 100% Karate Choppers - 70%

comes to 8.5 so i need to round to 9.0.

These episodes felt like a fever dream

Warning: Spoilers
First you have SB-129, its pretty clear why this one is freaky, especially with the whole sequence of Squidward breaking the time machine and being sent to the weird white void with squares in it. The whole scene with "Alone" being shown in different ways was freaky too, and the zooming out with the several overlapped "Alone" audios was just confusing.

Then Karate Choppers. This episode was less creepy (obviously), however it had one scene that was freaky, that being the Hot Sauce scene, where the hot sauce just... has a weird creepy human face for some reason. What were the animators and story writers on while creating these episodes??

One of the better episodes of the Series.

This and Band Geeks are some of the best of Seasons 1-3.
