- A seemingly perfect husband and wife happily live in one half of a duplex, unaware that the (seemingly vacant) other half of the duplex is inhabited by a woman who is living vicariously through them. Trying to fill the void in her own lonely life, she sets about spying, eavesdropping and eventually mimicking their idealized life in their beautiful home whenever they are away.—OAWFC
- The film opens with Girl Next Door (Adrienne Wilkinson) entering what appears to be her home. She's comfortable here. She grabs a bottle of wine from the fridge, and then takes a relaxing bath. She later reads a book, and eventually falls asleep. Things seem pretty normal.
Shortly after, Girl Next Door wakes up, and suddenly she's running around the house trying to put everything back the way it was before she leaves.
Wife (Jessica Johnson) and Husband (Austin Petersen) enter. Wife repeats a lot of the same actions as Girl Next Door (such as where she places her purse and her shoes), as she exchanges quips with her husband.
Either than the oddly near empty wine bottle, they have no idea someone was in their home.
The two lie in bed and talk, while Girl Next Door has her ear pressed against the wall next door, longing to be Wife.
Girl Next Door, in her home, is holding two muffins, like the ones found in Husband and Wife's home. She stalks along the wall, waiting for her moment.
When she hears Husband leaving, she leaves her home. She finally talks to Husband, who she is clearly obsessed with. Husband is surprised there was anyone living next to him at all, and Girl Next Door talks about how they met before at a bookstore some time ago.
Husband turns and begins to head out, and Girl Next Door quickly offers him a muffin, but he replies that he hates them and leaves.
Girl Next Door is disappointed when Wife joins her. Wife comments on how she loves muffins, and Girl Next Door tosses back, "They're stale." Heading back into her home with all the venom she muster in her voice in a final reply to Wife ("I don't hear a thing"), she slams the door. Wife clues in that Girl Next Door has been in her home, and picks up the spare key they keep in the planter.
