"The motion picture you are about to witness may startle you. It would not have been possible, otherwise, to sufficiently emphasize the frightful toll of the new drug menace which is destroying the youth of America in alarmingly increasing numbers. Marihuana is that drug - a violent narcotic - an unspeakable scourge - the Real Public Enemy Number One!
So reads the opening crawl to the now infamous film Reefer Madness. Originally released in 1936, it was designed as a hard-hitting expose of marijuana and its inherent dangers. The drug could cause "violent, uncontrollable laughter," the movie's introduction read. It could induce "dangerous hallucinations," "monstrous extravagances," all eventually leading to "shocking acts of physical violence... ending often in incurable insanity."

It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.
TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. Showtime's recently departed "Californication" can be seen in its entirety (Seasons 1 -7) as well, starting September 1. That's a lot of TV.
Movie fans have plenty to look forward to from Netflix in September, too. Sam Raimi's undersung 1998 thriller "A Simple Plan" hits the streaming service September...

Darren Lynn Bousman, the man behind several of the ultra-successful Saw entries including the original sequel Saw II, has just signed on to direct an indie sci-fi actioner called Apex, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Described as “Predator meets Call of Duty,” Apex is set to center on a secretive Special Ops team deployed on a covert mission to North Korea in hopes of securing a weapon of mass destruction. During the mission, the team is transported to another world and finds itself pitted against a hostile and extremely dangerous alien species. So, basically Predators but with military men instead of criminals.
James E. Cavanaugh came up with the idea for Apex (right) and penned the script, putting an emphasis on bringing current scientific trends in physics and biology into the story. Cavanaugh will be producing Apex with Ambiance Pictures’ Joe Di Mao (Kid Cannabis), 2511 Productions and Aaron Ray (V...

Closing with N.W.A.'s anti-authority anthem "Fuck tha Police," Kid Cannabis celebrates drug dealing via the real-life story of Nate Norman (Jonathan Daniel Brown), an overweight, nerdy teenage high-school dropout who, in 2005, teamed up with best friend Topher (Kenny Wormald) to smuggle ungodly amounts of marijuana across the Canadian border into Idaho.
Nate does this because he loves weed and hates being poor, and John Stockwell's film endorses his decision, not because of pot-legalization convictions, but because it sees Nate as a daring entrepreneur assured enough to partner with both a talented supplier (John C. McGinley) and an intimidating investor (Ron Perlman), as well as run his own motley crew of mules. Narrating his saga with grating clichés — "E...

If you ask me — nobody did, but please don’t stop reading now — Benicio del Toro doesn’t get nearly enough play. Sure, the guy would be all over the place if he went and took the villain role in Star Trek 2 — but he didn’t and, therefore, isn’t. (We’ll know if that was a wise move in eleven months.) I take it as good fortune, then, when Deadline say he’ll grab the lead role in Jimmy Picard, a psychiatry-based drama from Arnaud Desplechin, director of 2008′s acclaimed drama A Christmas Tale.
He and that film’s star, Mathieu Amalric, will make a reunion on Picard, itself the story of returning WWII veteran Jimmy Picard, a Native American whose battle scars are unlike those typically encountered by doctors.
