Great Season Finale, But I Wish They Wouldn't Do This Kind Of Thing
ccthemovieman-111 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The good news is that this is a very, very interesting episode; maybe the best of the whole first season. The bad news is that it's a two-parter so viewers had to wait until the next season to see what happened! In my case, since I've only seen this on DVD, I have to wait at least a year for the next DVD package to be available. What a bummer.

First, the group is shown leaving for two-week vacations: all of them but A.J. and Penelope. Elle and Derek are going to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Gideon is going to an isolated cabin in the woods; Dr. Reid is going to Nevada to visit his mentally-ill mother, and Hotchner is going home to be with his wife and kid.

After the first 13 minutes of almost soap-opera type stuff, as we get glimpses into the personal lives of the BAU, the main story kicks in when "Hotch" gets a strange phone call from some guy speaking gibberish about "the youngest holds the key" and several other things which sound like clues to a mystery. Derek then gets call saying there has been a murder in Room 19 of where he's staying. He investigates and sees a lot of blood. The trail of it goes to Elle's room, so she is rousted out of bed by local cops and handcuffed. Gideon, meanwhile, receives a package that contains a Nellie Fox baseball card, an envelope with the words "Save Me" printed on it, and a box. Inside the box is a man's head! Needless to say, that kind of ruins his quiet time in the woods (with an old flame, played by Diane Venora). Reid receives a skeleton key and a note that says, "She will die unless you save her, Dr. Reid. Call Gideon. He knows."

Back in the office in Virginia, the computers go haywire so Penelope freaks out. Jennifer receives a package with a framed European butterfly with a note that says, "She has been searched for, but never found."

Well, obviously the killer is playing a game and he knows all about each of the BAU members.

So much for the vacation. They have to get back together and figure this out, especially after another murder takes place related to their investigation. The show ends with the man in Elle's apartment, with a gun pointed at her. We hear a shot, and that's the end of the season!!!

Great first half of a episode

It was interesting to watch the events folding up. I'm sure part2 will be far better and will have an amazing ending. My only problem with this episode is Elle. I don't know why but she really annoys me

What a cracker of a season finale
TheLittleSongbird11 July 2016
Both of "The Fisher King" episodes are classic examples of why this reviewer loves 'Criminal Minds' as much as she does. At its best (like in this season this, "The Fox" and "Riding the Lightning"), it was riveting television and even the weakest episodes (and admittedly there are some weak ones) have redeeming values.

The only real criticism of "The Fisher King Part I" for me is the slow-moving first fifteen minutes, which does feel like filler. However, this reviewer is actually willing to overlook that because the rest of the episode is so brilliant. And as well as having a general indifference to Elle (usually this reviewer finds her annoying and coldly played), she is actually tolerable here, this is an example of where her vulnerability is relatable. Even if you're indifferent or dislike someone, nobody deserves to go through what she goes through here.

As always with 'Criminal Minds', "The Fisher King Part I" looks great. Stylish, atmospheric and never cheap-looking, as well as beautifully and cleverly shot. The music is suitably haunting and hypnotic, while never being over-the-top, melodramatic, intrusive or ill-fitting. As with the best of 'Criminal Minds', the writing is incredibly thought-provoking, structurally tight, smart and achieves a perfect balance of moods.

It's tautly paced, strongly directed and the tension and suspense keeps piling until it rises to fever pitch. The cliff-hanger is quite easily one of the best in the series, 'Criminal Minds' has been a mixed bag when it comes to cliff-hangers, but the one in "The Fisher King Part I" is suspenseful, nail-biting and overall brilliantly executed, and leaves one hungry and thirsty for more.

Here the characters are very well written as always and love the chemistry and support for each other once again, even when apart for a good deal of the episode. Really loved how strong and independent characters show a more vulnerable side in this episode. The acting is typically very good all round, even with the unsub spending much of his fairly limited screen-time almost unseen he still evokes chills from his voice alone.

In summary, a cracker of a season finale. One of the best 'Criminal Minds' season finales without a doubt as well. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Suspenseful and well written

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

I really enjoyed this episode I thought it was particularly suspenseful and incorporated all of the cast really well.

I enjoyed this episode because of the amount of puzzles and riddles they have to solve and this also goes into part two as well. I didn't think it was rushed or That the cast was grasping at straws been collecting clues I think it was all very well thought out.

Overall a well written and suspenseful episode that incorporated every cast member so they all shared a very valuable part to the plot.

The most important "clue" was left out of this preview
rachel-garber194711 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I am still trying to figure out why Garcia never held responsible for what she did. While I realize the game she played on her own laptop is what precipitated this two part episode, therefore "creating" a case to investigate in the first place. However, her "gaming" is what tipped off the Fisher King to the whole teams personal information. Everyone's privacy was invaded because she played a game using BAU connection, that allowed the unsub access to their private lives. Yet it appears that the only thing that Garcia "suffered" was to be upset. Garcia was recruited by the BAU because she hacked into their computers. I am surprised that nothing happened to her, she was not censured, she was not suspended for what she did. That was a real error on the BAU's part as far as I am concerned. Garcia has a propensity for digging through personal information that has nothing to do with the cases that are being investigated, and I fail to understand why her egregious behavior is overlooked time after time. She is very good at what she does, however, there should be a limit to what is tolerated by the BAU.
