Reboot of 1980s sword-and-sorcery thriller on hold following allegations against the director
A remake of the 1985 movie Red Sonja with Bryan Singer as director has been put on hold by its producers, in the wake of underage sex allegations against Singer.
Singer had been signed in September 2018 to direct a new version of the 1985 sword-and-sorcery yarn that starred Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, with a rumoured $10m (£7.77m) fee for Singer – even though he had been fired from the Queen and Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody in December 2017.

Not long after Millennium Films said that they would move forward with Bryan Singer’s Red Sonja movie regardless of the damning allegations made against him, the film has been put on hold.
The allegations came in a report from The Atlantic that focused on Singer and his thing for underage boys. Four men have accused him of having sex with them when they were younger than the age of consent. They spent 12-months investigating the director and spoke to over 50 sources. For years there have been allegations made against Singer.
Now, a spokeswoman for Millennium Films has said, “The project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin.”
The allegations were previously brushed off by studio head and producer Avi Lerner, who said:
"I continue to be in development for Red Sonja and Bryan Singer continues to be attached.

For now, Millennium Films is putting their newest film “Red Sonja” due to the alleged misconduct of their director Bryan Singer, though they haven’t kicked him off the movie itself yet.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, so many powerful men in Hollywood are now exposed, and still more accusations are coming to light. Singer is probably best known for his big-budget superhero films like “X-Men,” “X-Men: First Class,” “Superman Returns,” and so many others.

“Red Sonja” is no longer scheduled to go into production this year, reports Variety, as the controversy surrounding director Bryan Singer continues. The news comes after producer Avi Lerner released a statement standing by the filmmaker, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by men who were underage at the time of the alleged incidents. “The project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin,” said a spokeswoman for Avi Lerner’s studio.
“The over $800 million ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has grossed, making it the highest grossing drama in film history, is testament to his remarkable vision and acumen,” Lerner previously said of the situation. “I know the difference between agenda driven fake news and reality, and I am very comfortable with this decision. Millennium Films has reportedly put development of its comic book adaptation, “Red Sonja,” on hold as outrage surrounding accusations of sexual misconduct against director Bryan Singer continues to mount.
“The project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin,” a spokeswoman for Avi Lerner’s studio told Variety.
Millennium dropped plans to shoot “Red Sonja” in Bulgaria later this year.
Last month, The Atlantic published an explosive expose, written by Alex French and Maximillian Potter, detailing four new accounts from men accusing Singer of sexual misconduct beginning in 2014.
Singer has denied any wrongdoing.

Exclusive: Millennium Films’ Red Sonja film with Bryan Singer is being put on the back burner. After the movie was on the slate last year at the American Film Market, the prolific U.S. mini-studio has told us, “the project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin.”
Embattled Bohemian Rhapsody director Singer has not been formally removed from Red Sonja, but Millennium’s statement seems to at least acknowledge the filmmaker may not be the right fit for the movie at this juncture.
The big-budget action-fantasy film, which has been on the The Expendables outfit’s slate for more than a decade, was expected to shoot this year in Bulgaria, but that won’t be happening. Cast has not been set.
Singer has been the subject of multiple sexual misconduct allegations, most recently in an Atlantic exposé detailing sex with underage boys. The director has vehemently denied wrongdoing and has not been charged or convicted of a crime.

To say that Bryan Singer is a controversial filmmaker would be to deal in wild understatement.
This is, after all, the man who has been trailed by allegations of rape and sexual assault since the early 90s, during which time he was lauded for The Usual Suspects and several other features. Singer then graduated into Hollywood’s big leagues with X-Men and its rather brilliant sequel, X2, but the accusations were never too far behind.
Case in point: The Atlantic recently ran a story about Singer’s alleged victims earlier this month, prompting widespread anger and, frankly, disbelief, given the director fully expects to keep hold of his plum $10 million directing gig on Red Sonja. As a matter of fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he currently stands to earn upwards of $40 million from the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, too.

Later McGowan became engaged to director Robert Rodriguez, though they split in 2009 and ruined all chances of their planned "Red Sonja" movie ever seeing the light of day. McGowan and Detail have been spotted around Hollywood over the past year and look pretty darn adorable. The best of luck and happiest of well-wishes to McGowan and Detail.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced that they are relaunching their Army of Darkness comic book series. Now titled Ash and the Army of Darkness, the new series will be written by Steve Niles:
“Dynamite is proud to announce that their flagship comic book title, Army of Darkness, will receive a complete overhaul and a new ongoing series as imagined by Steve Niles, acclaimed author of 30 Days of Night and Batman: Gotham County Line. A horror/action series with dark comedic overtones, the newly-titled Ash and the Army of Darkness continues the time-traveling, demon-fighting adventures of Ash Williams, the smart-mouthed hero of the 1992 cult-favorite film of the same name.
“What I’m doing with Ash and the Army of Darkness is a complete reboot,” says Niles. “We start and the last frame of the film and then go right to the next. It’s a wild ride and I think fans...

While his dream of directing a "Wonder Woman" movie remains just that, it looks like Nicolas Winding Refn will get to exercise his female fantasy hero kicks through another outlet, taking on an equally iconic character.
Deadline reports Gaumont and producer Martha De Laurentiis are bringing the iconic hero "Barbarella" -- who first appeared in the Jean-Claude Forest graphic novel and was memorably played by Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim's big screen adaptation -- to the small screen with Refn to direct and executive produce. And well, that's about it at the moment. But it appears this will be pitched as a new series, so we can only guess that once the pilot is out of the way, Refn's involvement will be at the producer level only. That said, his input can only help make this a cut above, and hopefully succeed where NBC's sad "Wonder Woman" miserably failed.

There’s a whole subgenre of Movies Robert Rodriguez Never Got Around to Making. At various times in the last decade, the filmmaker was attached to/was working on/was caught on a microphone musing about the possibility of a Red Sonja remake, a Barbarella remake, an adaptation of the cult comic Madman, and an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars. (So he dodged at least one bullet.) Still, last summer at Comic-Con he promised me to my face that he was working on a pair of Machete sequels, a remake of the animation classic Heavy Metal,...

If the Mayans, and John Cusack, are to be believed the world will come to an end on December 21st of this year. While the authenticity of these claims are suspect at best, Dynamite Entertainment are grabbing hold of this idea with both hands and weaving the prophecy into new seven issue crossover series, Prophecy.
Dynamite are best known for adaptions of existing properties from a variety of media such as movies (Army Of Darkness, Expendables), T.V. shows (Xena, Warrior Princess, Stargate SG1) and literature (Zorro, Warlord Of Mars), and this new series will continue that trend with characters such as Dorian Gray, Vampirella, Red Sonja, Herbert West The Reanimator, Alan Quatermain, Dracula and many more, all playing a part.

That leathery face. That tough guy 'tude. That… refusal to text. Yes, it's time for more Machete, the character first introduced in a fake trailer in 2007's "Grindhouse" double feature by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
A crazy actioner with a sly political message hidden inside, "Machete" starred Danny Trejo as a former Federale agent who ends up in Texas, embroiled in a war between immigration, corrupt officials, and Shé, a mythical leader of an underground network helping illegal immigrants. Now it's time for Machete to kill again in... "Machete Kills." Succinct!
As if Machete didn't have enough to do in the first movie, the second will show him going up against an entire army in a fight against a drug cartel leader who's paired up with a crooked, crazy, and very rich arms dealer.
There's already a script in place, a tagline ("This time, they f**ked with the wrong Mexican!

Robert Rodriguez is a strange director. While the filmmaker is responsible for some of the bloodiest, most violent action films of the last 20 years . including Desperado, Sin City, and Machete - he always dedicates some of his time making films for his children. The most successful of these has been the Spy Kids franchise, the fourth of which is set to debut in theaters tomorrow. A few weeks back I was invited to participate in a roundtable interview with Rodriguez to talk about his newest film. Check out the conversation below in which he talks about developing Aromascope, his upcoming slate and exactly what happened to his Red Sonja project. So what happened to Antonio Banderas? You know what, Antonio, I had written him into the script, he was in an early version of the script, he.d always say, .Oh if you need me, call me.. One of the...

Next week, actress Rose McGowan will be appearing on the big screen as Marique, a beautiful and deadly witch in director Marcus Nispel's Conan: The Barbarian. However, not too long ago, McGowan was set to headline her own swords-and-sandals epic spinning out of the world of Conan as the title character in Robert Rodriguez's Red Sonja. Rodriguez has said in the past that the movie never happened because of rights and financing issues, but McGowan revealed in a recent interview in support of Conan: The Barbarian that "massive nerve damage" in her arm ultimately prevented her from playing the "She-Devil with a Sword."

San Diego Comic Con, even days old, keeps being the grift that keeps on giving. Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Planet Terror, From Dusk Til Dawn, you know who he is) announced that he is adapting the artwork of deceased fantasy artist Frank Frazetta, the guy who pretty much defined the visual style of "sword and sorcery" for characters like Conan the Barbarian. The Entertainment Weekly exclusive does mention the 1983 animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi, but only describes Rodriguez's take as being a "live-action film of Fire and Ice, based on the work of Frazetta," similar to his Sin City, which utilized the Frank Miller comic book to an unprecedented degree. Rodriguez himself said he wants it to "look like you just stepped into one of [Frazetta's] paintings, where you get to see his world, and how he saw people, anatomy, and composition and color."
So, I'm not sure if that...

If there's anyone who can probably get a new "Heavy Metal" movie made, it's Robert Rodriguez.
The "Spy Kids" director surprised everyone at the San Diego Comic-Con with news that his new media company, Quick Draw Productions, would set sail with a new animated anthology of leering adolescent fantasies.
Wait, wasn't David Fincher supposed to do "Heavy Metal?" And with a bunch of A-list directors like James Cameron lined up to direct segments featuring buxom babes with spears and spaceships and all that?
That's apparently dead, as the rights have now gone from Paramount to Rodriguez. Robert's already met with the magazine's owner, Kevin Eastman, and it's full steam ahead -- get ready to take another ride, ride, ride, ride... on "Heavy Metal!"
Okay, this is exciting and all, but Rodriguez is kind of like his buddy Quentin Tarantino in that he likes to "announce" things, things that more often...

The new trailer for Conan the Barbarian, which stars Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, and Stephen Lang, is probably the reddest of "red band" clips I've ever seen. In the loud, fiery trailer, we see impaled heads, decimated torsos, and general blood splatter. Fun! But remember, this is serious: Robert Rodriguez's reported remake of the important film Red Sonja hangs in the balance.

THR is reporting that Lee Daniels, director of 2009’s Academy Award-winning Precious, is going to be directing Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Zac Efron, and Sofía Vergara in upcoming thriller, The Paperboy, the film adaptation of the 1995 book of the same name by Pete Dexter.
Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In, All About My Mother) has been working with Dexter on turning the novel into a film for over a decade, and with Daniels now signed on to direct, and the leads now filled with some promising names, the project is certainly taking a more concrete form.
At the centre of the story is the character Jack James (presumably to be played by Efron), younger brother of investigative journalist, Ward, who works for the Miami Times. Ward returns to his hometown in Moat County, Florida, with fellow reporter Yardley Acheman to look deeper into the murder of a local sheriff,...

She told Entertainment Tonight: "For the last six months somebody created an email and all of my emails - incoming and outgoing - have been going to this email, whoever that person is. It's very violating and it's frustrating." However, McGowan accepted (more)...

Nicolas Cage has found a real partner in crime at Nu Image / Millennium films (or maybe it is the other way around) and the next film from the actor and mini-studio is the Taken-style action thriller Medallion, to be directed by Con Air helmer Simon West. While the folks at the studio seem to want Amber Heard to be a part of their regular cult cast, too, it looks like Red Sonja, also with Simon West directing, might be the company's next chance [1] to put her to work. Nic Cage's Medallion co-star will be Malin Akerman instead. The medallion of the title is one designating the licensed status of a NYC taxi, as David Guggenheim's script follows " a father -- a former master thief -- who has only a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York cab.

Lerner also said that he has his sights sent on Amber Heard (Drive Angry 3D, The Rum Diary) to become the new Red Sonja:

Drive Angry 3D producer Avi Lerner recently said that he would like to see co-star Amber Heard play Red Sonja in the new movie going into development. What does Heard think about that?

Heard is incredibly good looking, but she can't act worth crap. I guess for a movie like this it wouldn't matter if the actress can act or not as long as she's hot. That's just how this movie looks like it's going to play out. It sounds like she's in negotiations to take on the role,...

She’s been mostly blonde, but there are times when she’s a brunette, so I reckon it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Amber Heard to go redhead just for one movie. “Red Sonja’s” producer Avi Lerner has already said that he’d love to put his “Drive Angry” heroine into his “Conan”-esque reboot of the character, and now Heard is making noise that she wouldn’t mind that as well.
