After plugging away on her novel for eight years, Jane Black had the brilliant idea that she'd work for a well-connected author who would read her work, get her a publisher and, voilà, she'd become the voice of her generation. Instead, her boss Alfred Maynard dies under odd circumstances, and Jane's left with no job, no money, a heap of regret and a pile of unpaid bills. She's tired of the struggle and wants some structure and stability in her life - a regular paycheck and a dental plan. At 33 years old, is that too much to ask? Feeling hopeless, Jane bumps into her old friend Susan, who seems to have it all together. Susan's normal adult life suddenly seems like nirvana and, so, Jane decides to join her in the world of nine-to-five at Spirits Brokerage. But while our hyper-imaginative heroine is navigating the strange new rules and rituals of corporate culture, she's also having to adjust to her stylish and enigmatic new manager, Stella, and a team of marginally dysfunctional co-workers including Nick "Walton", Cary and Iggy. Just when Jane thinks her life is finally on course, she's side-tracked by a call from her late boss' publisher, Mr. Walker. Her dreams, however, are dashed when Walker merely offers her a job as his new assistant. But Jane's been down that road before; now it's time for a whole new direction. At Spirits, she'll be selling hope, peace of mind and booze so maybe she'll be all right after all.
