The three filmmakers contracted malaria while shooting the film.
Christopher de la Torre and Roberto Bentivegna were 20 when they left for Malawi to shoot the documentary. The original plan was to follow a small group of doctors, economists and politicians (which included Peter Salk and famed economist Jeffrey Sachs) and film their activities in the country for a few weeks. Unfortunately that plan collapsed- the night before their flight, no less- and the team decided to postpone their mission. The filmmakers decided that they had to go anyway, alone, and seized the opportunity.
