. . . Timothy Dalton laments here in TIMOTHY DALTON ON ACTING, which actually was recorded in 1987, the year Mr. Dalton tried to fill the shoes of Sean Connery and Sir Roger Moore by posing as James Bond, Agent 007 in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. When Babe Dahlgren replaced the "Pride of the Yankees," the Bronx Bombers' Iron Horse Lou Gehrig on May 2, 1939 in Detroit, Babe the Lesser smashed a homer and a double as the Yanks toppled the Tigers, 22-2. Dahlgren was pretty good at--as Mr. Dalton puts it--"taking over for something." It was not until he became the first major leaguer subjected to drug testing (for pot) that his career began to decline; his Draft Board even denied him the chance to contend against Hitler during WWII. Mr. Dalton does not homer--or even make it to second base--in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. I have no information as to what extent (if any) marijuana was involved in Mr. Dalton's shortcomings. What I do know is that he only made two Bond flicks--just one more than the infamously ruffle-shirted and skirted George Lazenby!
