I'll have what he's having
johno-2129 August 2007
I recently saw this at the 2007 Palm Springs Festival of Short Films and it's a delightful little comedy from Hungarian writer/director Márton Szirmai in his film debut in both roles. Based on a short story by Hungarian humorist András Nagy Bandó, a man goes to an outdoor lunch diner and orders the most common and popular item on the menu, Tripe & Onions with a raspberry soda and a pack of spearmint gum. Also at the diner is a disheveled homeless looking man and the two end up having their lunch together. Zsolt Anger, Tamás Ascher and László Kálday star as the the diners and their casual observer. Award winning cinematographer Gergely Pohárnok photographed this for probably no pay. This is a comedy played deadpan straight from beginning to end with a twist for the comedic payoff. I really enjoyed this very modest and very low budget short and I would give it an 8.5 out 10.

Decent short film elevated by the final twist

Warning: Spoilers
In this 2006 short film by Hungarian writer Márton Szirmai, we see a well-off man order a meal and drink, then return to eat it when he sees a beggar having started to eat it. Basically for almost all of the rest until the final plot twist we see the two sharing the meal with the well-dressed man always skeptical about not really getting in contact with the beggar's actions. Admittedly, at the same time, he's not disrespectful enough to simply send him away. It drags a bit while they're eating, but it's still fun to see the bystanders at the diner react to the two protagonists. As the beggar finally has finished, he leaves and we see what was really going on. Pretty funny development and I liked especially how one of the bystanders pulls away his drink from the rich man scared he might take it.

I recommend this short film. It a pretty good example how one detail can completely change a story depending on the point of view you're watching it from and I also liked how the score came from one of the bystanders directly on scene and there's much worse ways to spend seven minutes. On a sidenote, you shouldn't be worried about the language as there's no Hungarian dialog involved at all.

coincidence?
roozzz25 August 2009
Who thinks it's a coincidence, that this short movie has exactly the same plot than another Oscar and Golden Palm award winner short film titled The Lunch Date (1989) wrote and directed by Adam Davidson?

Check this out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100076/

I saw both of them and it really doesn't seem like it happened by chance to use the same shots... Szirmai Márton could at least mention that it is a "remake".

By the way there is also a third movie with the same plot, the Boeuf Bourgignon (1988)

the lunch date (1990) rip off
thomaswelvaert5 August 2008
for now i'm giving this 0/10 because this short has already been made i must admit it was made technically well but this scenario is a rip off of the lunch date made in 1990. It's actually less good than the lunch date. I hope the director marked this as a remake; if not he should be addressed about author rights. A pity i have to type 10 lines I really have nothing else to say about it the timing and characters of the lunch date are better. The food sounds of the eating face off are exactly the same. Shame on you. I hope somebody reads this, and comes to the same conclusion. Just buy or rent the movie DVD American shorts of cinema 16
