A hipper update of an NBC classic
truegenius-13 August 2006
A lot of people think of ABC's "Password" as the only word association game from game show history. Ah, if they overlook "Chain Reaction", how wrong they are. Michael Davies, the British genius behind "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", has dusted off this old show (it seems that Europe is the new region for game show production companies, think Fremantle Media's "The Price Is Right" and Endemol's "Deal Or No Deal") and brought it back with a new look and feel.

The object of the game is simple. Guess the next word in a series of words, each of which is associated somehow with the word above and below it. Letters are revealed one at a time and teams alternate back and forth until a word is guessed (or completely revealed, unlike the NBC version). Here's an example of a completed chain:

CHOCOLATE

MILK

SHAKE

DOWN

PILLOW

TALK

SHOW

The connections are "chocolate milk", "milk shake", "shake down" (as in shakedown), "down pillow", "pillow talk", and "talk show".

In this new version of the show, each correct guess is worth $100 in on the first chain, $200 on the second chain, and $300 on the third. When a team of three players (usually all friends associated somehow - all childhood buddies, all comedians, etc.) correctly guesses the last word in the chain, they get a chance to play a new feature for this edition, "Speed Chain". The Speed Chain is a miniature chain in which the team has 7 seconds to guess the middle two words of the chain. An example of a speed chain is:

THUNDER

S

C

DOOR

The correct answer for this one is:

THUNDER

STORM

CELLAR

DOOR

A Speed Chain pays at the same value for the preceding words in the chain - not much of a bonus, but some feel the show may make some adjustments during its inaugural run.

A fourth and final chain is played, but unlike the original version, now a player on a team must name a wager (from $100 to $500 of their bank) in addition to selecting where a letter is placed. The team with the highest bank after this final chain is the day's winner and advances to the bonus round.

In the bonus round, as on the original show, two players on the team alternate giving single-word clues to form a question that their now-blindfolded third teammate must guess (after ringing a bell). Seven correct answers in 90 seconds doubles the money won in the main game, while ten correct answers triples it. (The main game money is not at risk.) This is considerably less than the $10,000 originally awarded for a successful run in the NBC version.

Viewers old enough to remember clock radios with flip-style numeric displays or airport information boards with flip-style letters may enjoy the faux-flip-style graphics used throughout the show to display the words (or, like me, they'll wonder why the show didn't just bother getting some real displays!). Those born after 1980 probably won't appreciate the significance of the flip display paradigm; they'll just think it's "cool".

When NBC did the show back in the 70's, the venerable Bill Cullen hosted and celebrities played along with regular contestants. When the show was syndicated (as "The $40,000 Chain Reaction") it appeared to be done on the cheap. Thankfully, Michael Davies & company have given the show a better look, but appear to have skimped on the budget. As the show is running on GSN, that may be the reason.

"Chain Reaction" will have you calling out answers to the TV; it is an eminently playable game. With some adjustments and some larger prizes, the show has the potential to be another word-game hit on GSN, much like "Lingo".

Contestants seem exceptional dumb, sorry

Warning: Spoilers
My 1st thought when I watched this show is I was wondering if you had to pass a stupid test to be a contestant on this show.. Is preceding word to "owner" the 1st 2 letters DO, The guy guesses "door " owner. Of course the answer was obviously "dog" owner. And this goes on and on, to the point where I'm just aggravated.

7 is for updated version
mattgray-4302214 September 2021
The updated version is ok, but the old shows last game was God awful. They are replaying old eps on gsn now.. The new shows last game is way better and what it should be. I will agree Dylan is nowhere near Brooke burns or John Michael Huggins as a host and the comment about 90210 is hilarious, no he wasn't on that show but he reaaally should have been lol. Also this show highlights how americans are so uneducated and stupid. These are common sayings and phrases. A letter comes up under a word and I usually get it. These boobs need at least three letters before they guess and usually it's wrong still lol, never yelled at a screen more, thank you america what a gift.

The most painful 30 minutes of TV
Kranadon6516 November 2017
Besides the 90210 host, this show had the most unattractive stupid contestants. painful to watch and the host indicating that you can win a lot of cash if you play well. what was this guy on?. the most i saw anyone win was around 7000 and that was split amongst 3 players on the winning team. 2500 is nice change but compared to other games shows like TPIR or Wheel ,its peanuts.

Lame Contestants
miramar0311 December 2021
Hate to say it--but many of the contestants seem as though they have never heard a familiar phrase in their lives. I think the players on America Says have much quicker minds--and a much better host.

Still a good show, but too much like America Says.
forumglitch19 May 2021
Chain Reaction is still an entertaining show, I'll usually find time to watch it if I can. However, it's pretty clear that GSN cut and pasted some aspects of their other show America Says and implemented them into this program; i.e.: 60 sec bonus round at the end, 2 teams of three, second chance shows, and so forth.

Awful show - Clueless contestants
cqkar16 June 2022
Stop repeating the finished chain - please! And, find some contestants that aren't the Jeopardy rejects! Surely there are some smarter people out there!

I love it when Dylan talks to the fake audience (there's no real studio audience on set). Or, when they cut them in and out to express audience emotion off a pre-recording that sounds the same every time! 😁

This show has some of the most clueless people on Earth. Example tonight: FIRSx. Contestant replies, "Fun?" Are you serious?

I watched it again today. More of the same. These contestants are some of the dumbest people on Earth!! How about learning how to play the game in the final chain (above/below)?

Decent game but incredibly stupid contestants
dz505922 January 2022
I enjoy the game.... especially the newest version.... because the final round is much better than the old blindfold nonsense. But where do they find these clueless contestants? The ignorance of 90% of their players is truly astounding and unmatched in any other game show I've ever watched. I find myself often turning the channel because I just can't handle watching these people miss such easy puzzles. Either that or I find myself yelling at my television. The host is tolerable, but nothing like John Michael Higgins on America Says who I feel is one of the best game show hosts out there.

Makes me think I am smart
jampeak7 February 2022
The contestants are not Jeopardy material. I can only conclude that they reject players of higher I. Q. s. My only enjoyment comes from me knowing close to 100 Pct of words prior to the contestants. I also take pleasure in yelling IDIOTS at the TV. I really need to get a life.

Absolutely the most pointless game show I've ever watched
bpatrick-817 October 2013
What, please tell me, is the point of connecting seven or eight words where one word simply leads logically into the next one? At least on "Password Plus" and "Super Password" each set of five passwords acted as a set of clues to a person, place, or thing. This one has two teams of contestants trying to make a "chain" of words with nothing to hold them together. The final round, where two team members are given answers and alternate forming a question for their blindfolded teammate, failed as a separate show, "GO!", back around 1984. And, typically for GSN, the payoffs are chintzy as well. Don't bother unless you're just desperate for something to watch between 3 and 4 PM Eastern.

Not thought out enough and implemented dispassionate
patrickfilbeck17 December 2021
A very funny uizidee, which is implemented a bit pale and is still boringly fashioned. In addition, the questions or tasks are either much easy or the solutions are simply stupid so that a solution can come out at all.

bhobbs-733606 February 2022
There's one episode i hate because the boys were idiots and they weren't thinking of the word that adds to the chain. I'm not a fan of this show. I'LL NEVER WATCH THIS AGAIN.
