- DI Robert Lewis: We were wondering if you could translate something for us.
- DS James Hathaway: [Hathaway hands over the document in Greek to the professor] I managed to translate some of it, but these three lines... well, they are all Greek to me.
- Prof. Margaret Gold: You are a scholar?
- DS James Hathaway: Yes.
- Prof. Margaret Gold: Cambridge?
- DS James Hathaway: What makes you ask that?
- Prof. Margaret Gold: It would explain your limitations.
- Anne Sadikov: I'm Anne Sadikov, Inspector. This is my husband, Theodore Platt.
- Theodore Platt: [shouts drunkenly] Bloody women. They'll take everything except a man's name these days. You should be Mrs Platt.
- Anne Sadikov: Much too close to "prat" for my liking.
- [At the reception for the chamber music recital]
- Chief Superintendent Innocent: You *do* scrub up well, Inspector.
- DI Robert Lewis: Oh, this penguin suit's been to far too many Masonic dinners - the trouser leg keeps rolling up of its own accord.
- DI Robert Lewis: [Points at a painting authored by the deceased] Know anything about paintings?
- DS James Hathaway: A bit. Enough to tell good from bad.
- DI Robert Lewis: And?
- DS James Hathaway: And I refuse to speak ill of the dead.
- Theodore Platt: [to Harry Bundrick & Sefton Linn] Discussion? With you two? The words "life", "too", and "short" spring readily to mind.
- DS James Hathaway: There was a white band on his wrist, from wearing a watch. But, no watch.
- DI Robert Lewis: Well, he won't be needing one now.
- DS James Hathaway: Nothing like a little gallows humor to kickstart the day, hey sir?
