Director Albert Pyun tries his hand at this latest adaptation of the Lovecraft classic. Morgan Weisser star of other Pyun movies including Bulletface (2010) and Infection (2005) leads a small but experienced cast that includes his father Norbert Weisser horror fans will remember him from his brief but memorable role as the crazy Norwegian in The Thing (1982) and Crystal Green (who also starred in Bulletface). Although made on a shoestring budget the few who have seen H.P. Lovecrafts Cool Air seem to like it. A veteran director and seasoned actors will hopefully make this adaptation work. We will see.

Veteran director and cult icon Albert Pyun gets picked on quite a bit by geeky, translucent bloggers like myself, and, for the most part, the criticisms surrounding the glut of his cinematic output are justified. However, the guy has been on a roll lately — check out the immensely entertaining “Bulletface” if you think I’m full of cinematic excrement — and “Tales of an Ancient Empire” appears to continue this trend of B-movie excellence. Yes, the movie is beyond cheesy and, yes, it looks like a role-playing gamer’s wet dream come to life, but you simply cannot deny how insanely entertaining the embedded trailer truly is. Before proceeding, a warning: There’s some brief nudity in the clip provided below, so make sure nobody’s around if you choose to view this thing at work. Much love to Twitch for the info.

Gotta love a man with a sense of humor.
Back in 2001 Albert Pyun assembled one of the stranger casts ever and attempted to shoot an action movie with them in just eleven days. In the cast? Steven Seagal, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Ice-t, Nas, Jaime Pressly and Chilli from Tlc. The movie itself was called Ticker and was immediately relegated to the bargain bin.
Most directors would bury any material related to a film like this and hope nobody noticed. But not Pyun. While digging through his archives while preparing the crazy special issues of his films - the recently released Bulletface spanned five discs - Pyun came across a behind the scenes reel from the shoot and offered it up for public viewing here at Twitch.

Tales of an Ancient Empire just got a huge dose of badassedness in the form of a female daywalking vampire assassin to be portrayed by Victoria Maurette. Maurette joins the film's previously announced cast that includes Christopher Lambert, Melissa Ordway, Kevin Sorbo, Lee Horsley, and Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
The news came down from director Albert Pyun's official website, where you can also find a photo of Maurette in training in Buenos Aires for her role. She has previously appeared in two of Pyun's films: Left for Dead (review here) and Bulletface.
A brief synopsis of Tales of an Ancient Empire is as follows: A princess (Ordway) is on a quest to unite the five greatest warriors to save her kingdom from a demon sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.
To help familiarize fans with some of Maurette's "talents", Pyun provided us with...

He may very well be the longest running cult director in America today and now, thanks to a new relationship with Curnan Pictures, his films are hitting DVD in a series of lush multi-disc packages. We're talking about Albert Pyun, the director of Cyborg and The Sword and the Sorcerer, and one of his latest efforts - Bulletface - is about to be released in a whopping five disc set.
Included on the set are Bulletface itself with director commentary, a soundtrack CD and a host of other Bulletface special features. Wondering what fills the other discs? Those would be dedicated to another entire feature - what Pyun calls the Inferno version of Left For Dead, his horror western also featuring Bulletface star Victoria Maurette - plus that film's complete soundtrack.
Sweetening the pot even further, for a limited time Pyun and co are offering up copies of Bulletface at a 50% discount to Twitch readers!

We've been telling you about Bulletface, Albert Pyun's latest neo-noir thriller, for a while now, and finally he's provided us with a trailer so you can check it out for yourselves.
Synopsis:
The story is set along the Mexico/California Border, principally in Imperial Beach, CA. It concerns a female DEA agent, Dara Maren, who, in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets herself arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana. You can guess how bad it gets in there -- prison officials even harvest organs from the inmates. While she's in prison, Dara's brother is murdered by a drug lord who's creating a new DNA-altering drug made from human spinal fluid tapped from the living.
Hundreds of dead bodies are turning up along the Border, and the drug addicts become something not quite human. The drug is so addicting that even law enforcement and government officials are on the stuff.

B-movie legend, Albert Pyun, has passed along the trailer for his gritty hard-boiled scifi thriller, Bulletface. He tells us he filmed it fast and from-the-hip to capture the essence of the B program thrillers of the late 40's and 50's that were made from poverty row studios like Monogram.
The 5-disc Bulletface DVD is 50% off for Quiet Earth readers (code is qebullet50), so even if you don't buy it yourself, pass it on through your media sphere.
Pyun tells us "the discount is my Thank You to fans and those who love to hate my movies for supporting my efforts in trying to control the entire life of my movies. Sort of soup to nuts."
Trailer after the break (Thanks to Albert Pyun for fixing the embedding).

This April sees the comic book debut of filmmaker Michael Kutcher with The Claw and Fang.
Kutcher was an assistant director on horror flick Bulletface, directed by Albert Pyun and released in the USA on January 26, and a producer and assistant director on last year's comedy Kung Fu Joe, directed by Glen Berry.
He now wants to move from the production process to the creative side and crosses over into comics with The Claw and Fang.
The comic, a modern action drama with gothic horror elements, is drawn by Matias Basla and published by Bluewater Productions with variant covers by Dan Brereton, Gmb Chomichuk and Steve Babb.
The characters are pulled from many of Kutcher's real-life experiences, which helps give an added depth and authenticity to the story.
The four-issue story arc begins in the present with Justin, a 21-year old warehouse worker, who has given up on life in...

Albert Pyun has been shafted in the DVD department so many times it's not even funny. Did you know that all widescreen prints of Knights (review) were destroyed? Like, Wtf?
Luckily, all that's about to change with the release of Pyun's next film, Bulletface (stills). From now on, every film released by Albert will be director's cuts, lavishly presented in multi-disc sets as part of a new "The Albert Pyun Movie Collection" from Curnan Pictures. Not only that, but each film will include a "bonus" re-release. Bulletface for example, includes a revised version of Left for Dead, while Albert has told us that he may re-release his cyberpunk actioner, Nemesis, in an all new re-imagined version. And I frickin' love Nemesis, so that would be sweet.
Bulletface special edition DVD includes:
1) the Bulletface movie -- Letterboxed In Widescreen! The way it was actually shot.
2) Tony Riparetti's original music soundtrack to Bulletface on CD.

Over the holidays we heard from director Albert Pyun, who informed us that instead of his next release being Tales of an Ancient Empire, his long gestating follow-up to The Sword and the Sorcerer, it will be the gory and disturbing Bulletface written by Randall Fontana.
Pyun and Fontana first worked together on Hong Kong 97 back in 1994. Here's how Albert describes Bulletface, which he also promises is more sexually explicit than his other films and not for the faint of heart: [It] is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. It concerns a female DEA agent, Dara Maren, who, in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets herself arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana. We've just learned that Tales of an Ancient Empire will not be the next film released from director Albert Pyun. Rather Bulletface, Pyun's revenge fueled, scifi pot-boiler is expected to hit in late January while Tales heads into a final round of post.
Pyun is also telling us to expect something very different from the project: "Bulletface is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. Its a very taut horror/sci-fi film with a plot that twists and turns and it's more sexually explicit than my other films and is not for the feint of heart."
