- The biopic depicts the turbulent life of the uncompromising painter and untiring advocate of freedom, Domenicos Theotokopoulos, known worldwide as El Greco. Inspired by the passionate Venetian Renaissance and driven by the irresistible urge to quench his artistic curiosity, El Greco leaves behind the Kingdom of Candia (modern Crete) and finds himself in Toledo. However, because of his unconventional beliefs, El Greco soon acquired enemies in Rome, forcing him to confront the infamous Spanish Inquisition in the shape of the feared Archbishop of Seville and Grand Inquisitor of Spain, Fernando Niño de Guevara.—Nick Riganas
