- Wayne Palmer: [Over the phone] I wanted you to know we're in the process of verifying what Assad told you about his peace initiative
- Jack Bauer: Good, so far everything his told us has been true: his given us no reason to doubt him
- Wayne Palmer: I hope your right, I'm also calling because I want you to take charge in the search for Fayed and Numair
- Jack Bauer: Mr. President...
- Wayne Palmer: [Interrupts him] after the way the country treated you this morning... well after the way "I" treated you, I know I don't have any right to ask you anything but you've been on top of this situation from the start and I just want to make it official
- Jack Bauer: The truth is, I don't think I'm up to it
- Wayne Palmer: We are "behind the curve" as it is but if it weren't for you efforts today, we'd be nowhere. I need you to lead this search
- Jack Bauer: Then I'll do my best Sir
- Wayne Palmer: [Before hanging up] report to Bill Buchanan and contact me whenever you feel it's necessary
- Wayne Palmer: [Over the speakerphone] Jack?
- Jack Bauer: [while in a car with Assad and Curtis] yes Mr. President?
- Wayne Palmer: Do we have any leads on that nuclear weapon yet?
- Jack Bauer: We have one: we're following up on it now. It's early to tell if it's going to be "meaningful"
- Wayne Palmer: Ok Jack listen, I just had a meeting that confirms Assad is serious about pursuing this negotiated "peace" and he does in fact has the influence within his own people to make that happen so I would like to come in with him on some kind of an "arrangement", is he with you now?
- Jack Bauer: Yes Sir
- Wayne Palmer: Let me speak with him please
- Jack Bauer: [Before handing the phone to Assad] one moment
- Wayne Palmer: Mr. Assad, I am prepared to offer you full protection and a pardon for all crimes or acts of war in the past: there are "conditions" however. That you continue tracking Fayed and that you pledge your commitment to establishing a broader peace, is that acceptable to you?
- Hamri Al-Assad: In principle, yes. Forgive me Mr. President, but I need to see this in writing
- Wayne Palmer: You'll have it within the hour. Let me speak with Jack please?
- Hamri Al-Assad: [Before giving Jack back his phone] of course
- Jack Bauer: Yes Sir
- Wayne Palmer: This was not easy for me to do but I believe the "greater good" requires it. Do you agree?
- Jack Bauer: I'm glad it's not a call I have to make Sir
- Wayne Palmer: [Before hanging up] thank you Jack
- Wayne Palmer: So now we have to assume there is a rogue nuclear weapon somewhere on American soil or there will be soon?
- Tom Lennox: All agencies are advised to proceed under that assumption
- Wayne Palmer: So, what're we doing about this Karen?
- Karen Hayes: "Suitcase nukes", the term refers to a number of devices manufactured by the former Soviet Union: small enough for one individual to carry and they have a yield of one kiloton or less
- Wayne Palmer: Potential damage?
- Karen Hayes: The kill rate for a typical suitcase nuke is about half a mile. The radiation from the blast greatly extends that radius depending on the prevailing winds and other weather conditions
- Tom Lennox: You just arrived at the point here Karen, how many causalities are we talking about?
- Karen Hayes: Well, that depends on the population density: in a crowded city, many thousands would die instantly. Taking the radiation into account, the number of deaths and serious injuries would multiply into the hundreds of thousands
- Ambassador: [while in Oval Office] these events in the past few weeks are deeply distressing for all of us. If there's anything we can do to help, please tell me
- Wayne Palmer: You can help right now Mr. Ambassador: you can have a very "candid" conversation with us
- Ambassador: I'm always "candid", Mr. President
- Karen Hayes: Mr. Ambassador, we've been in contact with Hamri Al-Assad. We know his been a "driving force" behind a number of terrorist attacks around the country, around the world for the past two decades
- Ambassador: I know who he is
- Wayne Palmer: Assad "claims" his renounced terrorism Mr. Ambassador, says his "willing" to negotiate: do you think his telling the truth?
- Ambassador: I have reason to believe he is telling the truth
- Tom Lennox: But how much "influence" does he have? Does he speak to a large number of terrorist organizations?
- Ambassador: As you know, there are literally hundreds of such groups but Assad's reputation is that many of them, not all by any means, but a "substantial" number would follow his lead at least for a while
- Wayne Palmer: So this could really be a "significant" step towards peace?
- Ambassador: I sincerely hope so
- Wayne Palmer: Thank you Mr. Ambassador: you've been extremely helpful
- Ambassador: [Shaking hands] your welcome Mr. President
- Jack Bauer: [Over the phone] I need you to do something for me, I want you to run a cross check on Curtis Manning and Assad
- Chloe O'Brian: Is this important? I've got a lot on my plate right now
- Jack Bauer: Curtis has a problem with Assad: it's personal, I don't know what it is but I need to get them to work together
- Chloe O'Brian: [Before hanging up] I'll get it as soon as I can
- Ray Wallace: [Over the phone] I have what you want
- Ahmed Amar: Good. Now you're going to deliver it to a man named Fayed
- Ray Wallace: No
- Ahmed Amar: What?
- Ray Wallace: No, I'm not going to deliver it anywhere until you let my family go
- Ahmed Amar: Do what I say or I will shoot them
- Ray Wallace: Well, then I will destroy it and I have a feeling the people who you are working for will be very disappointed
- Ahmed Amar: Listen to me...
- Ray Wallace: [Interrupts him] no, you listen to me. I just killed a man for this package and I'm not going to deliver it to anyone until I know my family's safe
- Ahmed Amar: I'll release one of them
- Ray Wallace: Both of them
- Ahmed Amar: If I do that, I have no leverage and you know it: decide now which one you want me to release
- Ray Wallace: [after thinking it over] my son, release my son
- Ahmed Amar: I'll release your wife
- Ray Wallace: No, I just told you to release my son
- Ahmed Amar: [Sternly] you just told me who you value most. Your wife will call you when she's clear of the house: deliver the component and I will release your son. That's it. Don't push your luck
- Milo Pressman: [while working next to each other] damn it Morris, I didn't want these in tabs, I want these in tables like I told you
- Morris O'Brian: I work much faster in tabs. I thought that is what you wanted?
- Milo Pressman: No, it's not what I wanted: you're just being a pain in the ass
- Morris O'Brian: [Stands up] you know what? Nobody speaks to me like this
- Milo Pressman: [Stands up] I just did, so what? Why don't you sit down and get back to work
- Chloe O'Brian: [Walking up to them, after noticing them arguing] this has got to stop: everyone is extremely busy and you two are just distracting everyone around you
- Milo Pressman: [to Morris] if you can explain to him about following directions...
- Morris O'Brian: [Interrupts him] following directions? Is this what you call this power trip you're on?
- Milo Pressman: Oh, come on
- Chloe O'Brian: We know all what this is about. Milo, you and I dated a couple times before Morris and I got back together. We saw a couple of good movies but we both agreed it wasn't really "happening"
- Milo Pressman: Yeah
- Chloe O'Brian: [to Morris] and you, so I dated Milo a couple times, but I chose you so why don't you get over it and stop trying to beat him up?
- Morris O'Brian: [to Chloe] you think this is about my "insecurities"?
- Chloe O'Brian: Yeah, isn't it?
- Morris O'Brian: [Sitting down at his computer] ok fine, you know it in table format, you'll get it in table format. Let's just stop this mad psychotic terrorist bad guy before he detonates a nuke on Wilshire Boulevard, alright?
- Chloe O'Brian: [Before walking away] thank you
- Morris O'Brian: [to Milo as he sits next to him] sorry about that mate and just for the record: there's no lingering jealousy about any films you two may have seen together
- Bill Buchanan: [Over the phone] the police just vetted a call from a woman who her son is being held by terrorists
- Jack Bauer: Is she creditable?
- Bill Buchanan: I'm not sure yet: she says she was held for a couple hours but she got out somehow
- Jack Bauer: Is she on the line?
- Bill Buchanan: Yes, her name is Jillian Wallace
- Jack Bauer: Patch her through
- Bill Buchanan: Ms. Wallace, this is Bill Buchanan, I'm transferring you to one of our men in the field
- Jack Bauer: Ms. Wallace, my name is Jack Bauer, you said your son is being held by terrorists?
- Jillian Wallace: Yes and his forcing my husband to deliver a package
- Jack Bauer: What kind of a package?
- Jillian Wallace: I don't know: there are other people involved
- Jack Bauer: What's the name of the man holding your son?
- Jillian Wallace: Ahmed Amar
- Jack Bauer: Did he mention any other names?
- Jillian Wallace: Yes. One, Fayed
- Jack Bauer: How do we reach your husband?
- Jillian Wallace: You can't. He isn't carrying his cell phone
- Jack Bauer: Do you know where he was taking the package?
- Jillian Wallace: No, I'm sorry. Whatever you do, just don't let him hurt my son
- Jack Bauer: Ms. Wallace, we're going to do everything we can. Just stay away from the house and we'll get back to you
- Wayne Palmer: [after Tom and Karen enter the Oval Office] I've just approved the written agreement with Assad
- Karen Hayes: That was quick
- Wayne Palmer: It had to be. We don't the time to "stand on ceremony." Tom, I know you disapprove of this agreement but you have got to put that behind you: the issue now is how we "position" this with the public
- Tom Lennox: It must be kept "from" the public
- Wayne Palmer: That's not practical Tom. Word will leak out: it's to our advantage to make it known that Assad is on our side
- Tom Lennox: Then don't disclose the form of the agreement. Don't use the words "pardon" or "amnesty". We're cooperating
- Karen Hayes: I agree. Let's not portray Assad as a terrorist but someone's who's renounced terrorism and wants peace
- Tom Lennox: Terror turned "statesman"
- Karen Hayes: His not the first: the point is saving lives: that needs to be our focus here
- Tom Lennox: Ok so for every life that was lost in the past, because of this man, ten more would be saved in the future by working with him. Alright, let's face it, the logic is compelling
- Wayne Palmer: Alright, let's make a set of briefing points and get them to our communication people
- Karen Hayes: I'm on it
- Tom Lennox: [after Karen leaves to Palmer] I still have to say, I don't like this
- Wayne Palmer: I understand and it makes me appreciate your loyalty all the more
- Curtis Manning: [after seeing Jack hand Assad a file folder] what's the document?
- Jack Bauer: [Talking privately] I wanted to talk to you about it before it was executed, I didn't think it would happen this fast: we made a deal with Assad
- Curtis Manning: Who's "we"?
- Jack Bauer: The United States government. Personally authorized by the President, Assad will receive a pardon, in exchange for his full cooperation which he has given us
- Curtis Manning: In other words, "he walks"
- Jack Bauer: Like I told the President, it's not my call. It's not your call either. The responsibility lies with him alone: it's out of our hands
- Curtis Manning: [Nods] alright, if that's the way it has to be
