Black Bottom, or simply the "bottom," is an historical area of West Philadelphia, near the neighborhood of Mantua. It was mostly razed for urban renewal in the late '60s. Also referred to in this episode as "the 'hood," Mantua continues to struggle with gentrification and remains home to many working-class Americans.
The private school the victim and other students attend ("Hanford Prep") is almost definitely The Haverford School, an all-male school in Haverford, PA, located not far from the victim's 'home' in Narberth PA. Founded in 1884, notable alumni include painter Maxfield Parrish, NFL Films founder Steve Sabol, former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, and Phillies' owners John Middleton and James Buck. Additonally, Guest Star Robert Picardo is a graduate of William Penn Charter, a rival of Haverford in the country's oldest Inter-Scholastic athletic conference (the Inter-Academic). [Penn Charter is also the real-life setting of the television show "The Goldbergs", which is the school series creator Adam Goldberg and his two older brothers attended.]
