Hour One.
(07.29.96)
Live from Orlando, FL - Disney / MGM Studios
Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Larry Zbyszko
Scott Hall & Kevin Nash attack Sting in the parking lot on WCW Saturday Night.
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan Vs Mike Enos
Duggan wins by nailing Enos with a taped fist. I can't stand Duggan! Just looking at him gets me annoyed. As far as the match itself is concerned, it was mediocre.
*1/2
I hate to admit, but Duggan actually cuts a good promo about Hulk Hogan. He wants to know what's wrong with Hulk. Duggan says he's been to all the charity events with Hogan, and considered him a good friend. He's even had Hogan in his home. He says he doesn't wanna wrestle Hogan, he wants to beat him up.
Ric Flair, Chris Beniot & Steve McMichael (W/Miss Elizabeth, Woman & Debra) Vs "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Sting & Lex Luger
The match ends in a double countout The Outsiders viciously attack Arn Anderson, Rey Mysterio, and Scotty Riggs backstage. The participants in this match stop fighting to go and help out. Randy Savage jumps on top of the limousine and hangs on top of it while the limousine drives off (!)
***1/2
Thoughts: Not only was the match really good, but so was The Outsiders attack. The invasion felt so fresh and real. You didn't know what was gonna happen or where it was gonna happen. Things were actually unpredictable. WCW vs The NWO got stale eventually, but it revitalized wrestling for a while.
Rey Mysterio keeps saying there are four men in the NWO. Arn Anderson, Bagwell, and Scotty Riggs, and Rey Mysterio all get put it an ambulance. Bobby Heenan tells Eric Bischoff he doesn't feel safe enough to work there anymore and decides to leave.
Thoughts: The crowd is yelling boring and I can't say I blame them. BUT....for somebody that appreciates innovative angles and originality, this is powerful stuff. As I said, it felt frightening and real. Chris Beniot, Woman, and Debra all sell it with tears. Even Ric Flair is completely subdued! Cutting edge television at its finest.
Hour Two.
Your hosts are Eric Bischoff, Larry Zbyszko & Tony Schiavone
The Steiner Brothers Vs High Voltage
The Steiners win. I don't have too much to say about this match.
Eddie Guerrero Vs Big Bubba Rogers (W/Jimmy Hart)
Eddie wins with a schoolboy roll-up. Big Bubba had way too much boring offense for my liking. They were clearly trying to kill time after the huge angle in the first half. It's not horrible but it's pretty dull.
*1/2
Next, is a lengthy NWO vignette. It's basically Hogan, Nash, and Hall taunting Ted Turner and the talent of WCW.
World Heavyweight Championship
The Giant (C) (W/Jimmy Hart) Vs Greg "The Hammer Valentine"
The Giant wins with two chokeslams. The Giant says Hulk Hogan conned everybody into believing in him. The only problem is that Hogan never believed it himself. He promises to defend WCW's honor at Hogwild.
3/4*
6/10 ranking overall.
