Director May el-Toukhy tackles a subject that has not yet been explored and is frightening in the possibilities it reveals to us as women assume positions of power and authority. The troublesome specter of exploitive female sexuality is also elaborated upon in the Dutch Oscar submission, ‘Instinct’.
Two highly developed Western European nations, Denmark and The Netherlands, take female sexuality to extremes here in ways we only saw before as men’s terrain with such films as Last Tango in Paris or In the Realm of the Senses.
My initial reaction to both films was a sort of shame, as if somewhere deep inside of me, I understood the impulse that impelled both these women to venture into forbidden zones of action, but wished it had not depicted it so graphically. It would take a psychiatrist to explain the impulse in human nature that makes us enter dangerous sexual territories.

It's shot by Jean-Marc Bouzou and Florian Bouchet over three years starting in 1998 with a terrific score by François-Eudes Chanfrault (Clément Cogitore’s Neither Heaven Nor Earth) and sound production by Yolande Decarsin and Ludovic Escallier, and we see Catherine Deneuve, Loulou De La Falaise, Katoucha Niane, and Laetitia Casta, among others, interact with the master. This amazingly candid documentary reveals the designer in a terrible decline as he rules his studio like a latter-day Sun King
Most fashion documentaries are pretty sycophantic. Not this one. The long-delayed release of Olivier Meyrou’s Yves Saint Laurent: The Last Collections – alternatively (and ironically) titled Celebration – gives us an amazingly candid and rather shocking study of the legendary fashion designer, and his apparent physical and mental deterioration at the age of 60, as he was preparing his final show in 1999 as an independent designer in the old style, before selling the Ysl brand to Gucci.
The film was originally shown in 2007, but then withdrawn under legal pressure from Saint Laurent’s business and personal partner Pierre Bergé, who emerges from the film as callous, cynical, manipulative and cruel, calling Saint Laurent a “sleepwalker” who depends on his “anxieties”. Bergé is shown all but mocking what appears to be Saint...

We called it: There was no elimination on “Dancing with the Stars'” Disney Night. You guys are so predictable. The remaining nine couples will hit the hardwood (again) in Week 6, which is theme-less.
Now that contemporary and jazz have made their season debuts, they will rear their ugly heads again on Monday’s show, so you can probably expect some 9s for those numbers.
Here are all the routines:
Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko: contemporary
Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Val Chmerkovskiy: jazz
Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber: quickstep
Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten: samba
Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov: Viennese waltz
Karamo and Jenna Johnson: rumba Update Oct. 21: Karamo revealed in an Instagram Story on the official “Dancing” account on Sunday that he has contemporary.
Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson: quickstep
Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold: Viennese waltz

The last time I spoke with Bertrand Bonello, it was on Nocturama at the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema luncheon in 2017, hosted by uniFrance at Robert De Niro's Locanda Verde in Tribeca. The event was also attended by Django director Étienne Comar and Reda Kateb (who portrays Django Reinhardt), Film at Lincoln Center's Director of Programming Dennis Lim, along with numerous members of the French film delegation.
This time around, Bertrand and I met at the Hudson Hotel the morning before the New York Film Festival Us Premiere at Alice Tully Hall of his latest film, Zombi Child, with Mackenson Bijou, Louise Labèque, Wislanda Louimat, Katiana Wilfort, Adelé David, Ninon François, Mathilde Riu, and Patrick Boucheron. “I was 32, Yves was 26. Everything seemed wonderful. Later, you’re less easily satisfied. At first, you create art from nothing. Then, little by little, things start getting complicated,” says Pierre Bergé, the business partner, former lover, and longtime companion of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. His words play over a scene in Olivier Meyrou’s Celebration, where Bergé stands against a large, decadent window while the blinds get lifted. His right profile gets clearer and clearer as more and more light fill up the screen. From 1998 to 2001, Bergé had given Meyrou unlimited access to film Ysl’s final couture collection before the fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent got taken over by Gucci. As the takeover drew closer, Bergé executed some grand swan songs for the fashion house, of which the Yves Saint Laurent parade at the Stade de France before the end of the 1998 France-Brazil Football World Cup was the grandest.

Director Olivier Meyrou spent nearly three years embedded in the world of fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent as he was preparing what would be his final show. The resulting documentary premiered at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival, but was then suppressed after its only public screening, blocked by Pierre Bergé, business partner and occasional romantic partner to the legendary designer. Now, a decade after Laurent’s death and a few years after Bergé has passed away, the film–titled Celebration–has been reworked and will finally get a release.
With the relationship at the center between Yves Saint Laurent and Bergé said to have been an inspiration for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread–specifically Daniel Day-Lewis and Lesley Manville’s characters–the film provides a fascinating real-life peek into this high fashion world and the dynamics within it. Set to open at Film Forum on October 2 and expand in the...

In Max Winkler’s “Jungleland,” Jack O’Connell and Charlie Hunnam have a very familiar movie-sibling dynamic, playing brothers respectively “good” and ne’er-do-well, tough guys in the brutal business of boxing who’ve been knocked around a bit too much by life in general. This may inevitably recall the fairly recent likes of “The Fighter” and “Warrior,” excellent movies with other fine lead actors that likewise tipped hat to the gritty ’70s cinema of “Fat City” and “Rocky” — which in turn cast a critical yet longing gaze back to palooka dramas from Hollywood’s golden age.
“Jungleland” isn’t as good as any of those above-named films, but it’s good enough to make you wish it weren’t just so incredibly redolent of them. It’s the kind of enterprise that has everything but a single fresh idea, or even moment. It’s a very serious film in...

The annual Star Wars Celebration is the perfect place for fans from all over our galaxy to celebrate the one far, far away. And now, the world’s biggest Star Wars convention has zeroed in on its next place of refuge.
After bouncing around from London, Orlando, and most recently, Chicago, Star Wars Celebration 2020 will be returning to Anaheim, California next year from August 27-30th, 2020.
Taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center right across the street from Disneyland, this decision’s obviously based, or at the very least correlated, around the theme park’s most recent addition, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. So there’ll be a lot more Star Wars things for fans to do outside the convention, and a lot more money for the House of Mouse to pick up.
This move towards nearby attractions makes a lot of sense following the wealth of things to do at last year’s celebration.

Though Mark Hamill has a history of trolling his followers with fake Star Wars: Episode IX reveals, it now looks like he’s finally using his Twitter account to deliver some genuine info about one of his upcoming projects.
Last night, the Luke Skywalker actor shared a message teasing some big news on the way, and the best part is that we only have a few hours to wait before we find out what he’s talking about:
“Major Announcement Tomorrow 6:15pm Pst I’ll be sharing some Very Exciting news about a super-secret project I’ve been working on that’s just…. how can I describe it? Oh, I know! It’s: ‘Uh……… Wow. Just…….Wow.’ #WatchThisSpace”
Naturally, the tweet has been met with plenty of replies from fans hoping for Star Wars news, in which case, Hamill’s labeling of Episode IX as a “super-secret project” would presumably be sarcastic.

We’re well past being due the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX. In the cases of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, Disney served up first looks a whole year before they were set to arrive. It’s expected to be coming very soon, however, and now we have a date to mark on our Star Wars edition calendars.

In 1998, French filmmaker Olivier Meyrou filmed Yves Saint Laurent as he prepared what would be his final collection before the top-tier fashion brand sold to Gucci the following year. It was the end of an era, as Saint Laurent was already the last of the great French designers to operate his own house, and this would be his “Celebration” — although the man Meyrou observed was far different from what his legend suggested: reclusive, irritable, virtually silent, and, perhaps most shockingly, quite inelegant.
Ironic title notwithstanding, “Celebration” feels less like hollow adulation than some kind of macabre autopsy conducted on a still-living specimen. Saint Laurent died a full decade later, but seems barely there in this often contradictory portrait, which is simultaneously respectful of his genius and perturbed by the twitching, tragic creature Saint Laurent has become. Still, what kind of monster is cooed over by supermodels and treated like royalty by his staff?...

“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.
