Mandark's name comes from his own creation, having been originally named 'Susan' by his hippie parents. He originally had long styled hair and wore long clothing, giving him the appearance (along with the name) that he was a girl. This inadvertently led to his rivalry with Dexter (Dexter wouldn't let him use his new invention believing him to be 'an uneducated girl'). He cut his hair and changed his name to "Mandark", the literal combination of the two words he wanted to be known for: a "man" and "dark".
