Prime Video has released the first photos from My Lady Jane, the quick-witted romantic new series set in an alt-fantasy Tudor world. The series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on Thursday, June 27, in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.
Inspired by the best-selling book, My Lady Jane is a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal of a husband, Guildford.
At the center of this rollicking new series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane, who is unexpectedly crowned queen overnight and finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown (and her head)… My Lady Jane is an epic tale of true love and high adventure, where the damsel in distress saves herself, her true love, and then the Kingdom.

Jim Sheridan has dispelled rumors around a possible return to acting by Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the Irish director’s drama My Left Foot and also starred in his subsequent films In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer.
Rumors have been rife that Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, might be contemplating a return to the big screen after he was photographed by paparazzi coming out of a New York restaurant with Sheridan and Steven Spielberg in early January.
Sheridan said the trio had been holding a meeting about a possible reboot of his long-gestating project about the Kennedy family, focused on its social climber-patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor,” said Sheridan.

Pablo Larraín’s string of mostly 20th century biographical dramas hits a pinnacle of audacious brilliance with El Conde (The Count), a madly inspired reinvention of events embedded in the notion that longtime Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet became a vampire who ultimately tires of life and wants out after living some 250 years.
After playing it relatively straight and serious in their biopics of Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Pablo Neruda, the director and his shrewd and brilliant playwright collaborator Guillermo Calderón let their imaginations go wild (albeit rigorously so), and return with a sensational creation overflowing with a rush of startling notions that put this alternative look at a sinister ruling family on a top shelf all its own. Smart audiences worldwide will devour this bold, wildly irreverent take on its insidious subjects. After its festival debuts at Venice and Telluride, the film will make its Netflix home screen...

[This story contains spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Fall.]
Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Grace Caroline Currey quite literally put her blood, sweat and tears into Mary Bromfield and her superpowered counterpart.
Currey originally played young Mary in David F. Sandberg’s 2019 film, Shazam!, but ceded Super Hero Mary duties to Michelle Borth. However, with Mary now a full-fledged adult in the sequel, Sandberg promoted his frequent collaborator to the Shazamily, making her the only family member to play dual roles.
According to Currey, this scenario nearly played out in the 2019 film since Mary was right on the verge of adulthood.
“When they first cast me, they were toying around on whether or not to have the same actor for Mary, considering she’s the oldest of the kids,” Currey tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But now, with the second one, it was really neat to have that explanation that she’s an adult now.”

Streaming is the way most of us consume movies these days, but it is both a blessing and a curse. Yes, we have abundant options between Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, and the many other services on the market. The problem is that nothing is really permanent on these services, with movies and TV shows rotating between them constantly -- or leaving streaming entirely. Horror fans, in particular, are going to be losing some gems next month as many titles are leaving their current homes.
That being the case, now is the perfect time to add some movies to the ol' watchlist, but ones that can't be left to languish there forever, as they need to be watched with a sense of urgency. They aren't going to be there long, and you would do well to watch them while you can. So, here are some of the best horror...

A strong argument could be made for King Kong being the most influential movie ever made. Kong’s progeny includes Mighty Joe Young, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, Ray Harryhausen films, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, many of the character-driven stop motion creations of the past ninety years, and dozens of authorized and unauthorized spin-offs, sequels, remakes, and rip-offs. The film inspired dozens, if not hundreds of directors, special effects artists, sound effects creators, composers, and film creators of all kinds, who have in turn inspired the next generation of filmmakers, and they the next. It is the first special-effects driven blockbuster of the sound era; a genre-crossing spectacular that introduced the world to some of cinema’s most iconic imagery and sound, the screen’s first true Scream Queen, and one of the all-time great gods and monsters of film history.

In a deal sources place at 25M+ for worldwide rights, Searchlight Pictures has acquired Annapurna’s darkly comic horror film Nightbitch, starring six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (Arrival), acquired in a competitive sale. Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) has come aboard to direct the film, based on Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel, from her own script.
Nightbitch tells the story of a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine. Bond Group and Annapurna acquired film rights to Yoder’s book back in 2020 and developed the script alongside Heller. It marks a reemergence of Megan Ellison’s reconfigured Annapurna in the marketplace. The original plan was to launch sales in Cannes, but...

Sky has unveiled one of its biggest factual slates yet, greenlighting six shows including documentaries on the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and the Italian 1990 football World Cup, and a royal factual drama told through the eyes of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters.
The shows will air across Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, Sky Nature and Sky History over the next year and come as the Comcast-owned pay-tv giant prepares for a swanky London do tomorrow night, at which they will be presented.
Leading the slate is The Assassination of Olof Palme, a thriller-esque four-part series set in the Scandi Noir world of Cold War Sweden when the Prime Minister was shot in 1986 on the snowy streets of Stockholm. What followed was a 36-year search for the killer, which consumed many including the late Girl With the Dragon Tattoo author Stieg Larsson.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Thursday’s “The Masked Singer,” which was Night 2 of the two-part Season 6 premiere.)
“The Masked Singer” kept fans on their toes with the second night of its Season 6 premiere, an hour that began with an unmasking and ended with a cut and another reveal.
First up, we learned the true identity of Mother Nature, who was the second contestant cut on Night 1 of “The Masked Singer” Season 6 premiere Wednesday, but was not actually unveiled before the show ended. Viewers saw the green goddess actually take off the mask on Thursday’s episode, revealing Vivica A. Fox underneath.
In case you don’t recall, last night, Mother Nature sang Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” and the panelists made these guesses about her identity: Ken Jeong said Tiffany Haddish, Nicole Scherzinger said Tracee Ellis Ross, Robin Thicke also said Ross and Jenny McCarthy also said Haddish.

So out of the five Group A contestants who kicked things off last night — Octopus, Mother Nature, Pufferfish, Skunk and Bull — fans only know the identity of one, Octopus, who turned out to be Los Angeles Lakers player Dwight Howard.
But who are the other four masked singers? We don’t have the answers just yet, but we do know we’ll find out who Mother Nature, the other contestant who was eliminated on Wednesday’s Season 6 premiere, is when Night 2 airs tonight, Thursday. So we have a few more hours to guess about her identity — and plenty of time to speculate about the other four.

Film at Lincoln Center on Tuesday revealed the slate for the Currents section of the 2021 New York Film Festival, a slate of cutting-edge and experimental works that showcase fresh voices in contemporary cinema. The section’s opening night film is “The Tsugua Diaries,” a pandemic-era tale that premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight about three housemates in lockdown from Maureen Fazendeiro and Miguel Gomes (“Arabian Nights”).
Currents includes 15 features, plus 36 shorts contained in eight programs, and represent 27 countries. In addition to the Portuguese “The Tsugua Diaries,” several films center around the pandemic. Shengze Zhu’s “A River Runs, Turns, Erases, Replaces,” is a meditation on Wuhan’s urban spaces before and after the outbreak, while Denis Côté’s “Social Hygiene” is an absurdist comedy in which characters exchange frank barbs from a humorous distance.

Summer 2021 will likely be short on new hits until the Tokyo Olympics, if you even count them, kick off next month on NBC. Save CBS, each of the English-language broadcast networks have debuted at least one new series so far this summer, with Fox and ABC launching a pair. ABC’s “When Nature Calls With Helen Mirren,” which launched Thursday night, is already the biggest summer freshman to date — and that’s even when comparing its available Live + Same Day viewing to the other shows’ Live + 7 Day numbers, which include one week of (mostly) DVR catchup. That’s some queen of the jungle stuff right there. “When Nature Calls” drew 3.584 million “live” total viewers Thursday night, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. That’s about 1 million more “live” audience members than ABC’s “Celebrity Dating Game” initially posted. Adding in a week of “Celebrity Dating Game” catchup, the Mirren-hosted animal clip...

Nature called, and Helen Mirren answered. The new series “When Nature Calls With Helen Mirren” debuted at 8 p.m. Thursday, winning its time slot and carrying ABC to a first-place finish. Well, among viewers 18-49, ABC ended up in a tie with Fox atop primetime. Of course, ABC includes the 10 o’clock hour in its primetime averages, and Fox does not. Advantage: Fox. Last night, NBC premiered “Making It” Season 3 and brought back “Good Girls.” The former outperformed the latter. ABC and Fox tied for first in ratings, both with a 0.4 in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. ABC was first in total viewers with 2.72 million, Fox was third with 1.7 million. For ABC, “When Nature Calls” drew a 0.5 rating and 3.6 million total viewers. At 9, “Holey Moley” had a 0.5 rating and 2.6 million total viewers. “The Hustler” at 10 got a 0.4 rating and 2 million total viewers. For Fox, “Beat Shazam...

This week CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said adult deaths from Covid-19 are “at this point entirely preventable” due to the effectiveness of vaccines. And a new analysis from the AP confirms what Walensky said.
According to the analysis of government data from May, released on Thursday, out of the 18,000 Covid-19 deaths during the month, approximately 150 were fully vaccinated people. That comes out to 0.8 percent, or an average of five deaths per day out of more than 200 average daily deaths. At the height of the pandemic in January of this year,...

New Delhi, June 12 (Ians) As the world faces acute semiconductor or chip shortage, a team of Google researchers is working on to design next-generation artificial-intelligence (AI) chips, and has created an AI model that allows chip design to be performed by artificial agents with more experience than any human designer.
The new AI method utilises past experience to become better and faster at solving new instances of the problem.
"Our method was used to design the next generation of Google's artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators, and has the potential to save thousands of hours of human effort for each new generation," the team wrote in a paper appeared in the scientific journal Nature.
"Finally, we believe that more powerful AI-designed hardware will fuel advances in AI, creating a symbiotic relationship between the two fields", they noted.
In about six hours, the model could generate a design that optimises the placement of different components on the chip.

Exclusive: Rlje Films has acquired U.S. rights to Creation Stories, the rock biopic of Creation Records creator and founder Alan McGee that is directed by Nick Moran and stars Trainspotting alum Ewen Bremner. The deal comes ahead of the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Kirsty Mitchell, Suki Waterhouse, Thomas Turgoose, Leo Flanagan and Jason Isaacs also star in the Metro International Entertainment pic, which charts the true story of the rise and fall of McGee, credited as responsible for supplying the “Brit Pop” soundtrack to the 1990s, a decade of cultural renaissance known as Cool Britannia. I came face to face with the Doomsday Glacier (a.k.a. Thwaites glacier) in 2019, on a trip to Antarctica aboard the Nathaniel B. Palmer, a 308-foot-long icebreaker operated by the National Science Foundation. I had dubbed the Florida-sized slab of ice its nickname in an article I’d written a few years earlier, and the name stuck. Nevertheless, I was unprepared for how spooky it would be to actually confront the 100-foot-tall wall of ice from the deck of a ship. Locked up here in the West Antarctic ice...

“The Masked Singer” got more than it bargained for when special guest judge Rita Wilson joined the panel for Wednesday’s Super 8 episode. Following the Chameleon’s hip hop performance of “Regulate” by Warren G feat. Nat Dogg, Rita shocked the audience when she declared, “You might have a competitor, Chameleon. You might not know this about me, but I can spit some flow.” The actress/singer/songwriter/producer then broke out into a rap version of Naughty by Nature‘s “Hip Hop Hooray.”

Netflix says it has a plan to hit net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022, with a big part of the streaming giant’s efforts aimed at operating more eco-friendly film and TV productions.
The “Net Zero + Nature” plan was outlined Tuesday in a blog post by Emma Stewart, PhD, who joined Netflix as its first sustainability officer last fall. At Netflix, “we aspire to entertain the world,” she wrote. “But that requires a habitable world to entertain.”
In 2020, Netflix estimates its carbon footprint was 1.13 million metric tons, down slightly from 1.31 million the year prior (mostly due to delayed content productions during the Covid-19 pandemic). Roughly 50% of that was generated by the physical production of Netflix films and series, including third-party projects licensed as Netflix-branded originals. Another 45% came from corporate operations (e.g. office space) and purchased goods (like marketing spend) and 5% was attributed to internet cloud providers...

The life of legendary band manager/Creation Records founder Alan McGee has been brought to the big screen by director Nick Moran and screenwriter Irvine Welsh, in Burning Wheel Productions’ Creation Stories.
Adapted from McGee’s autobiography, Creation Stories- Riots, Raves and Running and Record Label, the film charts McGee’s anarchic rise from small town promoter to industry mogul and the formation his record label Creation, which housed the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Oasis.
The Creation Stories’ stellar cast includes Ewen Bremner (as McGee), Jason Isaacs, Suki Waterhouse, Rupert Everett, Stephen Berkoff and Jason Flemyng which, along with Moran’s direction, make it an energetic low glide over one of the last great music movements.

New York, March 16 (Ians) A team of researchers, including one of Indian-origin, has suggested that a leprosy drug holds promise as an at-home treatment for Covid-19.
The study showed that the leprosy drug clofazimine exhibits potent antiviral activities against Sars-CoV-2 and prevents the exaggerated inflammatory response associated with severe Covid-19.
"Clofazimine is an ideal candidate for Covid-19 treatment. It is safe, affordable, easy to make, taken as a pill and can be made globally available," said researcher Sumit Chanda from the Sanford Burnham Prebys in the US.
"We hope to test clofazimine in a Phase 2 clinical trial as soon as possible for people who test positive for Covid-19 but are not hospitalized. Since there is currently no outpatient treatment available for these individuals, clofazimine may help reduce the impact of the disease, which is particularly important now as we see new variants of the virus emerge and against which the current vaccines appear less efficacious,...

New York, March 9 (Ians) Covid-19 vaccines developed by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech significantly appear less effective against the Covid variant that first emerged in South Africa, finds a new study.
The study, published in the journal Nature, indicated that the percentage of protective antibodies that neutralised the variant -- B.1.351 -- was 12.4 times lower for Moderna's Covid-19 shot, while Pfizer's vaccine was found to be 10.3 times lower.
According to the researchers, including Manoj S Nair from Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the US, multiple vaccine constructs have shown promise, including two with 95 per cent protective efficacy against Covid-19. However, these interventions were directed toward the initial Sars-CoV-2 that emerged in 2019.
The recent emergence of new Sars-CoV-2 variants B.1.1.7 in the UK and B.1.351 in South Africa is of concern because of their purported ease of transmission and extensive mutations in the spike protein, the team said.

It’s hard to judge Siân Heder’s Coda outside of its context: being one of the opening feature films to the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, a (now-virtual) place known for family dramas and indie darlings. Depicting the high school struggles, and coming-of-age of the only hearing girl in a deaf family, Heder’s follow-up to Tallulah (another Sundance selection) takes its name from an acronym––Children Of Deaf Adults––though it’s determined to stray from any generalizations. With big warmth and bigger care, Coda overcomes its tropes and somewhat formulaic nature to produce a heartfelt tale of family, wrapped in a coating of love. In that way, it might be the ideal film to start one of the world’s biggest festivals during a seemingly never-ending pandemic, one that splinters families as well as hopes and dreams of child and parent alike.

New York, Jan 2 (Ians) Researchers have discovered a new class of compounds that combine direct antibiotic killing of pan drug-resistant bacterial pathogens with a simultaneous rapid immune response for combating antimicrobial resistance.
The research, published in the journal Nature, comes at a time when the list of bacteria that are becoming resistant to treatment with all available antibiotic options is growing and few new drugs are in the pipeline, creating a pressing need for new classes of antibiotics to prevent public health crises.
"We took a creative, double-pronged strategy to develop new molecules that can kill difficult-to-treat infections while enhancing the natural host immune response," said Farokh Dotiwala, Assistant Professor in the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center, The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, US.
Dotiwala is the lead author of the effort to identify a new generation of antimicrobials named dual-acting immuno-antibiotics (DAIAs).

New York, Dec 24 (Ians) For the first time, scientists have recorded how our brains navigate physical space and keep track of others location, suggesting that our brains generate a common code to mark where other people are in relation to ourselves.
Researchers used a special backpack to wirelessly monitor the brain waves of epilepsy patients as each one walked around an empty room hunting for a hidden, two-foot spot.
In an article published in Nature, the scientists report that the waves flowed in a distinct pattern suggesting that each individual's brain had mapped out the walls and other boundaries.
Interestingly, each participant's brain waves flowed in a similar manner when they sat in the corner of the room and watched someone else walk around, suggesting these waves were also used to track other people's movements.

Photo: 'Alien Worlds'/Netflix When we conjure up images of life on other planets, we have a host of sources to draw from. Perhaps we think of the little green men parodied in Paul, or the prawns from District 9, or the oddities that made us laugh in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! We’ve seen aliens depicted as allies, aggressors, or something completely beyond our comprehension (Annihilation). As fun as these are to entertain, Netflix’s new documentary miniseries paints a more realistic, but no less intriguing, portrait of potential alien life. Rooted in fact and scientific speculation, each of the four episodes focuses on a different planet beyond our solar system, and the type of life that may exist there. Combining stunning visuals with fascinating interviews, Alien Worlds varies little from other spectacular Netflix nature outings such as Our Planet or Night on Earth in terms of style and...
