Sex & Nudity

  • There is some crude humour and frequent sexual references made by characters, although it's nothing too severe.
  • This show is known for its frequent innuendo. Jokes are usually maybe a little worse than The Simpsons for reference.
  • Some male characters end up naked, though the genitalia is always censored with mosaic and it's always played for laughs. The character Kondo gets naked the most often out of all the characters in Gintama.
  • A woman who eats too much and became fat says that she's pregnant, however this is meant to be played for laughs
  • Female nudity is not present in this show.
  • Japan actually rated some of this show "G" for all ages, so unless you really don't want innuendo to float among your kid's TV shows, it's fine.
  • There is considerable male fanservice that, while played for laughs, contains censored genitalia. (Fanservice is when a character gets in a slightly revealing spot and something mildly shows for a very brief amount of time).
  • The underground city of Yoshiwara is a red-light district, so while we see nothing, there are sexual references made that can be both serious or comedic.

Violence & Gore

  • Despite Gintama being predominantly a comedy, when the show gets serious, fight scenes can become very intense, violent, and moderately gory.
  • There are many references and themes of Japanese historical violence such as sepuukku, domestic abuse, beheadings, suicide attempts etc. but these are mainly played for laughs.
  • A lot of episodes have mild violence - often comedic. This is mainly people getting whacked over the head, kicked in the thighs, jumped on etc and isn't particularly gory or upsetting.
  • Some characters have violent and disturbing pasts, especially Gintoki, the main character. Most of these pasts aren't discussed until later into the series though.
  • Shinpachi get his crotch hit with the back of the scooter. He is later beaten up by his sister.
  • A group of Yakuza were beaten badly, off-screen and nothing is graphic.

Profanity

  • Occasional uses of words like sh*t or f*ck
  • Regular uses of "hell", "damn", "bastard", "ass", "piss/pissant", "bitch/son of a bitch", "balls" and "asshole". Occasional uses of stronger language like "shit" and "fuck".
  • The both coarse language are mild and moderate.
  • Strong profanity for a TV-14 show such as bitch, assholes etc.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some arcs reference drug dealing/drug consumption, however it's quite rare and doesn't go into detail
  • A few characters smoke a lot
  • Gintoki likes to drink alot

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are a couple of 'scary scenes' that end up being played for laughs, but are still quite scary (eps 153 or 224 for example)
  • There are certain character deaths later on that are very saddening and traumatic for some viewers
  • At episode 300, the series reaches a "point of no return" and it becomes very serious with little comedy throughout.
  • "Gintama" is a action satire comedies anime series. There are many references of various pop cultures, all of these are played for laughs.
  • Despite Gintama being a comedy manga and anime series, the genre doesn't stop it to have some nightmarish moments, especially in serious arcs.
  • Some of the Amanto, Yakuza or villains are violent and terrifying.
  • Many episode involving violence and are sometimes very intense and can be a bit too much for some
  • Many characters have a very upsetting and sometimes violent past.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Gintoki has a nightmare related to his past. While carrying a wounded comrade on a mountain of corpses, the corpses speak to him that he can't protect anyone. The nightmare ends with the one he was carrying turning out to be a skeleton and also screaming that he can't protect anyone. This scene can be frightening for younger viewers.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In Episode 50, Sacchan's horror trailer is very violent and can be disturbing to some showing several characters getting killed and tortured in brutal ways. Such as, Shinpachi, Kagura, Otose and Catherine were murdered, Otae get shot in the head, Katsura get stabbed, Hasegawa get crucified and Gintoki getting whipped graphically. Many of these are hid in the dark shadows but shown in a close-up.
