As a longtime fan of Gary Oldman, it’s great to see him joining a new action thriller! The movie is called The Courier and he will star alongside Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion).
Kurylenko will play a courier in the story “whose daily deliveries are interrupted when she discovers that her latest package is a bomb aimed at killing a witness who is about to testify against a ruthless crime lord".
As you might imagine, Oldman will be playing the crime lord, so we’ll get to see the actor play a villain again, which is always fun.
The UK action-thriller will start shooting in London next month under the direction of Zackary Adler (Rise of the Footsoldier III).

The original D/Generation was one of my favourite Amiga games. The combination of a sci-fi puzzle game with such a unique take on the isometric genre moved along by such a minimalist story told in fragmented fashion really appealed to me and I worked my way through the game several times back on my trusty Amiga 500. The pulsing sound track and neon colours were etched into my memory as I wandered the corridors of Genoq, inching my way past its automated defences in search of the enigmatic Dr Derrida.
I remember a few years ago I was reminded of the original when I found a remake by West Coast Games on Steam; I instantly purchased it and was massively disappointed by the shoddy update. Even the run animation looked half-finished and the game was barely playable, much less enjoyable, and so although I was excited when this version for the Switch came out,...

The Far Cry series has been in a bit of a weird spot the last few years. From Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, that wowed with its gorgeous visuals and over-the-top humor, to Far Cry: Primal‘s weaponized wildlife, we’ve seen a series trying plenty of new things. But if I had to put it simply, it’s felt a little all over the place. I worried wacky settings and gameplay gimmicks were becoming the replacement for good fundamentals and compelling storylines. So here we are with the new, main-line entry that is Far Cry 5. Forget exotic jungles and lore-rich ruins, we’re knee-deep in America (read: Mericuh). Much to my surprise, the move to a more familiar locale has left the series feeling fresher than ever.

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet survive together in the cold after a plane crash in The Mountain Between Us trailer.
Quick Update: the UK release date for this one has now been confirmed as October 6th.
The Mountain Between Us, a romance-tinted survival epic, thrusts the always-game Idris Elba into a chilly survival situation opposite an actor who knows a thing or two about those on screen, Kate Winslet. However, as the newly released trailer proves, this situation is attributed to much more than an unwillingness to scoot over on a makeshift raft, since it occurs after a plane crash over snowy Northeastern Utah mountains.

"Designed to inspire, and it works!" These were the first words out of my friend Ian's mouth as we exited "The Idol," Hany Abu-Assad's newest film. Three days later I was still feeling its effect and recommending it to people here at the Toronto Film Festival whenever we discussed the films we had been seeing.
This Palestine/ UK/ Qatar/ Netherlands production was inspired by the true story of Mohammed Assaf, a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza and whose voice became the voice of the nation when he won the Arab Idol contest in 2013.
International sales by Seville (eOne’s arthouse branch) were made before Tiff to some 20 territories including Benelux (September Films is the former Wild Bunch Benelux), France (TF1), Germany (Koch), Japan (New Select), Hong Kong (Edko), Hungary (Mtva), Australia (Umbrella), Latin America (California Filmes), Portugal (Outsider Films), South Africa (Times Media) Switzerland (Praesens), China (Beijing Xiangjiang YiHua Films), India (PVR), Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (Red Pictures), Taiwan (Spring International), Former Yugoslavia (Discovery Films), Romania (Independenta), South Korea (Kaon Contents & Media) and Airlines (Captive). eOne will directly release the film in Spain. Mbc will distribute throughout the Middle East, including in Palestine and North Africa. Adopt Films just picked up U.S. rights.
This is a feel-good movie which gives a human voice to the Palestinian dilemma without being political or religious. It’s pure heart.
“The Idol” was coproduced by Image Nation of Abu Dhabi, Enjaaz -- a Dubai Film Market initiative -- Doha Film institute with support from the Netherlands Film Fund. Mbc also coproduced and is handling the film’s release in the Middle East and North Africa. September was the Dutch coproducer and is handling it in Benelux.
Speaking in Toronto with Hany Abu-Assad, he agreed, this film was designed carefully. And at its world premiere here in Toronto, he was so nervous. When the laughter from the audience happened at exactly the right moment, he knew the film worked the way he had envisaged. “They laughed and cried at the same time,” he said. He did not know even though the editing if the emotion will carry it. “You don’t know until you show it. When I knew that people laughed with the kids then I knew I had succeeded. The little laugh when the kids were chased told me it worked.”
“From the small laugh to another point here, and another here, a domino effect starts.”
The original script was written by Sameh Zoabi whose earlier film, "Man Without a Cell Phone" won the Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival Award for Sameh as Best Director. Hany gave the finished script to his (and my own) friend, colleague and script consultant, Annemarie Jacir, whose own film, "When I Saw You" premiered in Toronto in 2012 and won many awards including the Audience Prize at L.A. Film Festival in 2013 and at Amiens and the Netpac Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2013. “She gave me some notes and worked on some of the dialogue."
I remarked how much I liked the joke about the distance between Gaza and Egypt being the same as the distance between Cuba and Florida and told him about a parallel joke made in the Cuban film “Barrio Cuba” when the Havana people call those coming from the east (Santiago de Cuba) “Palestinians”.
Aside from having a top-notch script, the entire film design was also successful because he worked with the same Dp Ehab Assal, Editor Eyas Salmon who was also editor of Tiff’s “Dégradé”, Production Designer and Art Director Nael Kanj and the Location Manager who all worked on his last film, the Academy Award nominated “Omar”. They have grown with him are now top quality artists and technicians who can work on both local and international productions.
“During ‘Omar’ we talked a lot about how the film would work, the concept, the core, the score, but on this film we spoke less. We knew each other better and it was much easier to shoot knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. And it was joyful and almost telepathic. We hoped this approach behind the camera would also inform the on-screen experience,” said Hany who also insisted on shooting on location in both Beirut and Cairo for the exterior scenes set in those cities so that the film would look and feel real.
The key to this film has always been authenticity both in front of and behind the camera. That is why “The Idol” is one of the first, if not the first, international production to shoot on location in Gaza, despite the logistical difficulties to get a film crew in and out safely. Set in the devastated landscapes of a Gaza still reeling from the month-long bombardment in 2014, Abu-Assad and his crew were still able to find great moments of beauty and surprise. The Gaza Parkour Team, for example, supply their amazing acrobatic display in the most surprising way in one moment, proving that art can thrive in even the most challenging of situations.
For more on "The Idol" read the pre Toronto reportage.
That desire for authenticity is also why Hany insisted on finding and employing real kids from Gaza to act in the film. The crew did a Gaza-wide search, holding casting sessions and rehearsals in schools across the area. Ultimately, the production was blessed to find four amazing Gazan children to star in the film, all first time actors, and all incredible natural performers.
The first half of the film takes place in a war-torn Gaza city which for
Mohammed Assaf, his sister Nour and their best friends Ahmad and Omar is a playground where they freely ride their bikes, play music, football and dare to dream big. Their band might play on second hand, beaten up instruments but their ambitions are sky-high. Their ambition is to play at the world famous Cairo Opera Hall.
The world around Mohammed shatters. Through it all, however, he retains the hope that his voice will somehow deliver him from the pain that surrounds him and bring joy to others. He sings at weddings, he drives a taxi to pay for his university studies. Even as the siege around Gaza intensifies, the prison around them ever more forbidding, Mohammed knows he has a rare gift, the ability to make people smile and forget their anxieties about day to day living.
On TV one evening he watches as the auditions for Arab Idol, the most popular show in the Arab world, take place in Cairo. The borders are closed. There is no way out. Somehow, he finds a way and makes it in front of the judges in Egypt. From there, destiny awaits, a chance to change his life and give a voiceless people the greatest feeling of all: the freedom to love, live and feel free.
However success in the weekly competitions bring on anxieties of a new kind, to be the one responsible for being the voice of his people, Palestine takes on more importance than his personal reasons for surviving and succeeding.
This film plays well to children and adults equally. The boy becomes a man, played by Tawfeek Barhom who played in last year's "Dancing Arabs" and switches gears to his escape to Egypt and his competing in the Arab Idol talent contest. At the very end, Tawfeek’s character becomes the real star, Mohammed Assaf. His voice was always used, even when Tawfeek was supposedly singing.
“I always ask myself why I want to make a movie and spend almost two years of my life working very hard to complete that movie. In the case of ‘The Idol’, the answer was clear and simple. The story of this young man, Muhammad Assaf, is such an incredible story that even somebody like me who, just three weeks earlier had won the Jury Prize of Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, was more excited for Assaf to win Arab Idol than for myself. I was caught on camera between thousands of people gathered in the square in Nazareth to hear the final results for Arab Idol; I was jumping in excitement like a little kid, and I have not had this kind of excitement for a very long time. When Ali Jaafar offered for me to direct Muhammad Assaf’s story, my arms were covered in goosebumps. I knew immediately that I would do everything to make this story a movie.”
“I see ‘The Idol’ as the story of fighting and the will to survive under extreme circumstances. It’s a story of hope and success, where a brother and a sister were able to make from their disadvantages an advantage, and from the impossible possible, who come from nowhere to overcome all odds, beating poverty, oppression, and occupation. They have the ability to convert ugliness to beauty, which, in the end, is the power behind all art and the fuel to nurture hope.”
“The film was designed as a movie with no cultural barriers. You could be Chinese, American or Palestinian and you can appreciate the film. The very old and the very young can all understand the journey. It crosses religious lines. I meant to take a very specific story into a broader context.”
“The story of Mohammed Assaf is a once in a lifetime event, an opportunity to put a human face on a people who have all too often been marginalized and misrepresented. “
“At a time of unprecedented upheaval in the Arab world, with revolutions, civil wars, strife and extremism, Mohammed’s journey from humble wedding singer in Gaza, to the region’s hottest young star played out before our eyes weekly. Every Friday and Saturday night, for a few minutes, viewers could release themselves from the daily struggles and remember how to smile again.”
“Mohammed Assaf represents the spirit and symbol of what might be; of dreams coming true; of the impossible becoming, for a precious moment at least, entirely possible.”
“The children in the first audience loved it.”
“The girl is now with her family as refugees. They escaped and are seeking asylum in Europe. The three boys were in Toronto and one wanted to stay.
I’m happy I gave four Gazan kids the chance to see beyond the ghetto. They have special talent and their exposure now allows the world to come to them. Audiences love these children so much that they have offered to pay for their education. There was even an offer to adopt one. With paid-for education their futures are now more hopeful,” Hany said.
“The girl is so talented. She never acted before but she understood and loved the logic of shooting, of decoupage. ‘Is this a wide shot?’ she would ask. She spent three days asking about the lenses. On the second day an actor off camera forgot his lines. She continued to talk as if he were talking, as if he were acting. She came out of war. Two of her uncles were killed in the war. When you loose your fear of death you are enormously naked, exposed and you become more sensitized. She could become a great actress.”
“I’m glad I could do something for these four children”.

Hany Abu-Assad is one of the world’s most distinctive filmmakers. The two-time Academy Award-nominated director – “Paradise Now” (2006) and “Omar” (2013)- has won countless other awards including the Berlin International Film Festival’s prestigious Blue Angel award, Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and the Special Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.
He was born in Nazareth, Palestine in 1961. After having studied and worked as an airplane engineer in The Netherlands for several years, Abu-Assad entered the world of cinema as a producer and produced the feature film “Curfew”, directed by Rashid Masharawi, in 1994.
In 1998 he directed his first film, “The Fourteenth Chick”, from a script by writer Arnon Grunberg, followed by his documentary “Nazareth 2000”, his second feature film “Rana’s Wedding” and his second documentary “Ford Transit”.
In 2006 his film “Paradise Now” about two Palestinian men preparing for a suicide attack in Tel Aviv, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign language film in 2006.
In 2011 Abu-Assad finished working on “The Courier”, a Hollywood movie starring Jeffery Dean Morgan, Til Schweiger and Mickey Rourke.
Most recently, Abu-Assad’s “Omar”, which featured star-making performances from Adam Bakri and Leem Lubany, garnered the director his second Academy Award nomination for the edge-of-your seat thriller. The film won several worldwide prizes including the Jury Prize of Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival.

Double Oscar nominee has been in Rotterdam with his new feature, The Idol, a biopic of Palestinian singer Mohammad Assaf.

Through the long press tour for smash success Gravity, director Alfonso Cuaron made light-hearted jokes about son and co-writer Jonas being too busy gearing up his next film to talk to his dad. The younger Cuaron has been working on getting Desierto ready to shoot with Gael Garcia Bernal as its leading man and has just locked in a villain, signing Jeffrey Dean Morgan to the role.Having once more collaborated with Alfonso on the script, Jonas is set to direct the tale of a group of illegal immigrants, including Bernal's character, who are trying to cross the border into America in the hopes of starting a new life. But they fall afoul of a man (Morgan) who has unofficially decided to take the job of border patrol guard into his own, racist hands. The shoot is currently pencilled in for Baja, California next month, with more casting to come.

Currently on a foreign film buying binge, Deadline reports that Adopt Films have added Hany Abu-Assad’s latest to a slate that includes Martin Provost Violette and Yuval Adler’s Bethlehem. Omar, which we thought was muddled by the one too many twists in plot is perhaps what one might get when they mix Abu-Assad’s polarizing and paralyzing Paradise Now, with the genre film The Courier which is sandwiched by the two. We can expect the Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winning (Jury Prize) drama to hit theaters next year.

Spike Lee's new Oldboy is almost upon us, but it's not the only installment of Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy to be getting an English-language makeover. As previously reported, Oldboy's predecessor Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is also re-developing fast under the aegis of producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian. And it seems a director has now been chosen, in the form of Paradise Now's Hany Abu-Assad.Abu-Assad remains best-known for 2005's excellent Paradise Now, about Palestinian suicide bombers in Tel Aviv. He revisited the Arab-Israeli conflict with this year's Omar, which picked up the Special Jury Prize at Cannes and was viewed by many as a return to form for the director following his woeful 2012 straight-to-dvd action film The Courier, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Mickey Rourke. He'll be hoping that Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is a better experience than that inauspicious Us debut, and you can't...

Justice has a new face! And that face is sleepy! The appeal of actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan seems to lie in the suggestion that he’s giving his performance right after he just woke from a nap. This makes him the perfect leading man for “The Courier,” a new action thriller hitting DVD this week. Directed by Hany Abu-Assad, who last helmed the Oscar nominated “Paradise Now,” “The Courier” almost seems embarrassed by it’s content, acting like a slow-moving character study that just happens to have ludicrous gunfights, preposterous code names, and a perverse downbeat ending. As the title character, grumpy Morgan is essentially a working-class version of “The Transporter,” brokering deals on a budget with a specific set of rules he’s determined to avoid breaking. Moody and untrusting, he shows no change in demeanor after one particular deal, which involves catching a woman thrown off a roller coaster.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Prometheus" What's It About? Ridley Scott returns to the world of "Alien" with an epic prequel about mankind's first contact with a mysterious alien race who may or may not be our makers, and may or may not have sinister purposes. See It Because: "Prometheus" pulled off a rare feat, adding a new layer of intrigue to the rich mythology of the "Alien" series. Not since "Inception" has a summer blockbuster come along with such audacious head-scratching concepts. And despite being filled with plot holes, it was still fun to argue about the film's big questions. Also, the always brilliant Michael Fassbender was terrific as David, an android servant with T.E. Lawrence-sized dreams of exploration. Watch Noomi Rapace's Screen Test for "Prometheus" - (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video | Netflix) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "E.T. Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

Yet another film called The Courier is coming out. This one, an action flick, is getting distribution by Well Go USA Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The distributor, known mainly for releasing Asian genre-fare Stateside, has begun acquiring more English-language films.
At first glance, this film didn’t do much to grab my attention. It looked pretty derivative: courier must deliver mysterious briefcase to killer or his family will be murdered, and then have their skin harvested to make cursed luchador masks (only probably not that last bit).
But Jeffrey Dean Morgan, or, as he’s more commonly known, by his supervillain nom de guerre, “Bizarro Javier Bardem,” is one of those guys I’ve always loved, who never has good enough roles. Even the most mediocre of films (I’m looking at you, The Losers) is generally elevated by his presence. And who is Til Schweiger if not...

The Courier
Stars: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Josie Ho, Mickey Rourke, Til Schweiger, Lil Taylor, Miguel Ferrer | Written by Pete Dris, Brannon Coombs | Directed by Hany Abu-Assad
Watchmen‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan takes centre stage in The Courier as a “delivery man” hired to deliver a mysterious case to a notorious elusive hitman (Rourke) who is so feared that the entire criminal underworld trembles at the mention of his name. With the life of his family held to ransom there’s no way he’s missing this drop, but hounded by hit men and hustlers, double-dealing feds and double-crossing accomplices, the courier’s delivery is not as simple as he planned.
From the writers of Wanted, 2 Fast 2 Furious and 3:10 to Yuma and the executive producer of Haywire, The Courier is one of those films that with no big-name lead actor, will, for most people, fly totally under the radar. And that is a crying shame.

The comeback of Mickey Rourke has been a faltering thing. After years in the wilderness, the actor returned in force with an Oscar-nominated turn in Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler," and followed it up with supporting roles in bona-fide blockbusters "Iron Man 2" and "The Expendables." Since then, however, things haven't been so hot, with long-delayed films "13" and "Passion Play" mostly disappearing on release, while Rourke's self-destructive tendencies came out again when he bashed not only those films, calling them (accurately) ''terrible," but also director Martin McDonagh, who Rourke labelled a "jerkoff" after he bailed on the helmer's film "Seven Psychopaths." The actor instead lined up the kind of direct-to-video actioners that he was stuck in the 1990s, films like "The Courier," "Black November" and "Java Heat." But could he have...

I first saw Dream Home at Frightfest and I pretty much fell in love with it. You can read my review of the film here. Released on DVD today by Network Releasing, Dream Home definitely comes with a strong recommendation from me.
The lead performance by Josie Ho as Cheng Li-sheung is one of many high points in the film and a couple of months ago I was lucky enough to be given the chance to email off a few questions to Josie and you can find her responses below. Dream Home was financed and produced by 852 films, a company co-founded by Josie Ho, and their next film is the Ching-Po Wong directed Revenge: A Love Story.
Cheng Li-sheung in Dream Home is a complex and fascinating character. Was there anything you specifically did to prepare to play the character and what was the experience like on set?...

Coming Soon have received a very special consignment delivered to them in the form of the first promo poster for action flick, The Courier.
Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mickey Rourke and Til Schweiger, the film centres around a specialist carrier (Morgan) who upon being hired to deliver a mysterious case to the underworld’s most fearsome crime boss, also finds himself having to contend with corrupt cops and dangerous killers.
Sounds like there are definite shades of The Transporter series here, but any comparisons with those films may hopefully end with the premise, due to The Courier’s strong cast and seasoned scriptwriters, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (the duo behind Wanted and 3:10 to Yuma).

Last week the star of Hong Kong slasher film Dream Home was in town to promote easily one of the craziest flicks of the year. FilmShaft went along to a Mayfair hotel to have a chat with Josie Ho about acting in a role usually portrayed by men, being a producer and working with Steven Soderbergh on his 3D flick Contagion.
It’s a very dark, twist number with enough satirical ‘stabs’ and gore to keep the horror fans happy as much as those wanting something with a little more … brains. Josie Ho is delightful, direct and one gets the hint she’s actually a little bit shy.
FilmShaft: How did this project come to?
Jh: It’s a funny story. My friend Juno introduced the director (Pang-ho Cheung) and brought us the story. The director pitched the movie to us and my friend wanted to play the lead. As...

With the amount of trade news we write, there are certain screenwriters that we tend to see frequently -- on some days, it feels like every Hollywood studio project is being divided up among 15 men (there are sadly no women on this list; the few notable female screenwriters tend to be better known as directors, and I've excluded those known more for their directing work, as they are more recognizable).
Truth is, I had no idea what most of these guys looked like until I compiled this list. Most people who follow the industry probably know what John August looks like (the guy behind a lot of Tim Burton's films) and maybe William Monahan, but few would recognize many of those behind the movies that pollute our multiplexes look like.
So, for the curious among you, here are 13 currently prolific screenwriters whose faces you've probably never seen, but whose...

When Hurricane Katrina hit, this Six Flags New Orleans theme park was abandoned and never reopened. After watching this eerie video tour of the park, which is shot entirely on a dolly and scored to Godspeed, You Black Emperor, I'm convinced that a horror movie must shoot here immediately. Teddy Smith made the video while working on production for The Courier, a crime-thriller starring Mickey Rourke which apparently shot here. But someone with the right script could make the creepiest horror movie of all time in this place. And Louisiana has serious tax-incentives. Watch the video after the jump, then find a way to make this happen!

Mickey Rourke continues his current career resurgence with a role in action thriller The Courier (as reported by The Wrap).
The Wrestler star joins the Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Inglourious Basterd Til Schweiger in the story of a tough courier (Morgan) who finds himself having to avoid being picked off by corrupt federal agents, crooked cops and dangerous rivals when he’s assigned a job to deliver a briefcase to a notorious crime boss.
It does sounds suspiciously like a re-working of Jason Statham’s Transporter films, but with 3:10 to Yuma scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt onboard and Hany Abu-Assad (director of acclaimed drama Paradise Now) attached, any comparisons between the two films will probably be the main character’s job role.

I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face and the blackest eyes; the devil's eyes. Writer/director Hany Abu-Assad tackled some pretty weighty subject matter with his 2005 film Paradise Now, a very well received drama about suicide bombers. For his latest picture though, the upcoming action/thriller The Courier, he's turned his focus to more audience-friendly fare. The film was written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (the team behind the 3:10 to Yuma remake and Wanted), and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as "a courier who has tackled dangerous assignments and never missed a drop. He's hired to deliver a briefcase to a notorious crime boss who can't be found. The courier finds himself pursued by corrupt cops, double-crossing feds and rivals from the criminal underworld." Now Mickey Rourke and Til Schweiger (Inglourious Basterds) have joined the cast, with Schweiger playing an FBI agent and Rourke in an unspecified role. Additionally, Schweiger has also joined This Means War, McG's spy flick about two best...

If you.re not on board for the Mickey Rourke comeback tour, then there might be something wrong with you. Ever since Sin City back in .05 the man has been getting role after role and knocking every one of them out of the park, including his role in The Expendables, in which he is the only meathead doing any real acting. And the Rourke train shows no signs of slowing down, as the hulking actor has just signed on to join The Courier, a Jeffrey Dean Morgan vehicle about a tough courier (clever) tasked with delivering a briefcase to a baddie that can.t seem to be found, according to The Wrap. Of course, there.s plenty of obstacles in his way, of which Rourke may be one. Also appearing in the film is Til Schweiger, who you may all know better as the badass Nazi killer Hugo Stiglitz in...
