Environmental-Friendly Episode!
g-bodyl17 July 2014
This is the fifth episode of the second season of 30 Rock and once again, it's another excellent episode. The jokes and the one-liners are getting stronger and stronger. With this episode, it is hard to point out a weak spot. This season has a knack of excellent guest stars and that continues with the addition of David Schwimmer, who is just awesome as Greenzo.

In this episode, "Greenzo," Jack hires an actor named Greenzo to help promote a green environment. But Jack gets angry when Greenzo begins to abuse his power and publicly calls out Jack and his company. Meanwhile, Liz suspects that Pete may be cheating on his wife. Kenneth holds a party, which ends up being the craziest party ever.

Overall, this is a very strong, funny episode. My favorite part had to be Kenneth's party. The aftermath was just ridiculous and it had me in stitches. This is one excellent episode. I rate this episode 9/10.

Surprisingly good

Warning: Spoilers
I had low expectations for this episode, with David Schwimmer appearing to be a pointless and unfunny guest star who plays the title character Greenzo, dedicated to spreading an environmental message. And indeed, the character was mostly unfunny (though admittedly, he had his moments). It just felt like stunt casting, although it was good to see him apparently killed off. But other parts of the episode surprised me in being good, so much so that I got to give this episode not just a passing grade but a good grade. I'll be content subtracting two stars for Schwimmer. In this episode, Kenneth throws a party that promises to be lame until Tracy turns it into a wild event (with someone even eating Kenneth's bird's medicine, causing the poor bird to have seizures all morning). This party, 30 Rock style, was enjoyable.

Also in this episode, Pete gets his biggest storyline since the first season episode Black Tie, as Liz discovers Pete has begun a wild affair with his own wife. This plot line is meant to be disgusting and shocking and funny, and it succeeds in those aims.

Greenzo (#2.5)

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode Jack decides to have some green child super hero, Greenzo, who gets really into the green stuff! And the actor who got the role is David Schwimmer. Was very excited to see him as a guest star on this wonderful show. He was always my favorite actor on Friends, lots of charisma and great acting skills.

The other story is about Kenneth's party. It is hilarious. I loved it all from Liz remembering Kenneth's parties she was an only guest, to how the party end up going. Great story and great lines.

And there was another surprising guest star. Al Gore himself! I always admired him as a politician and still wonder how much better it could have been if he won the election. Now I also appreciate him as an actor.

The environment is important, m'kay?

30 Rock keeps living up to its excellent track record with another ridiculously funny episode, replete with absurd scenarios and even more insane characters.

A while back (actually, the fifth episode of Season One), Jack said he was studying comedy by watching a classic NBC sitcom, namely Friends, and asked Liz what happened between Ross and Rachel. Coincidentally, or maybe not, David Schwimmer, aka Ross, appears in this episode as the actor playing the titular Greenzo, an environmentalist superhero who's supposed to teach kids about the dangers our planet faces ever day. Unfortunately, "Greenzo" gets full of himself and starts a "green crusade" of sorts, openly challenging Jack. Meanwhile, Pete, who's still staying in Liz's apartment, makes people believe he's cheating on his wife, and Kenneth invites everyone to his birthday party, which inevitably ends in a way no one wants to remember.

After Jerry Seinfeld, Will Arnett, Steve Buscemi and Carrie Fisher, the show confirms its gift for guest stars thanks to Schwimmer, whose manic performance (a clear parody of Ross Geller) was more worthy of an Emmy nomination than Buscemi's (still very funny) private eye spoof. The Pete subplot is even more brilliant than the vasectomy gag in the previous season, and the whole mess involving Kenneth's party should be used to teach budding screenwriters how to do comedy.

Oh, one more thing: given the environment theme, an appearance by Al Gore was inevitable. Less easy to predict was the fact that he almost steals the episode with just two lines. Maybe he should give acting a serious thought: how many non-professionals manage to outshine Tina Fey in only ten seconds?

Greenzo is the most hilarious episode of "30 Rock" this season yet!
tavm1 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Because the machine I recorded this episode on had to be returned, I had to go on nbc.com to watch Greenzo. This is the funniest episode of "30 Rock" this season so far! In a nutshell: Jack hires an out-of-work actor named Jared (David Schwimmer) to play an environmentally conscious character named Greenzo to appeal to kids on the "Today" show (with an appearance by Meredith Vieira). A chipper Pete makes Jenna think he's having an affair which Liz doesn't believe. Kenneth sends invitations for his birthday party which initially only Liz accepts (as she had the previous year). Tracy, though, resolves to make it an event by spreading rumors about various famous guests that he himself starts to believe in. What results is this: Jared gets too full of himself and is replaced by a Famous Politician, Liz finds Pete having an affair with his wife (Paula Pell) when she finds them in her bed, and Kenneth's party is an unmitigated disaster with everyone ashamed of themselves...I loved all the lines concerning Kenneth's party before the event, many of Schwimmer's concerning the environment, and especially Kenneth's admonishing everyone on their behavior at his party which, in quick-cut flashbacks, weren't as funny but when added to Kenneth's stern lines were pretty hilarious. Funniest visual was seeing Pete and his wife in Liz' bed with the wife covering her breasts and seeing the pop-tart in that bed. Knowing Ms. Pell once wrote with Fey on SNL added to the humor for me. Everyone involved deserves a round of applause! Oh, and that final line about the whale...

Greenzo's Critical Advocacy for Mother Gaia

I absolutely LOVE Greenzo and his over-the-top approach to promoting environmental awareness and action - and I pretty much loath David Schwimmer.

In fact, I would totally invest serious money in any endeavor to create a full-length feature Greenzo film. I could even see it all in my head. Something kinda gonzo-like - straddling between real-life performance intervention and more formally scripted segments a la Sacha Baron Cohen's character-driven 'Borat' movies or The Yes Men would be mind-blowingly fantastic.

I actually NEED to see this film through to full expression and theatre release. Anyone want in?

Link to Studio 30 on the Sunset Strip

Warning: Spoilers
David Schwimmer guest stars as the manic Greenzo! Not only that, David's co-star on Friends was Matthew Perry, who starred on 30 Rock's rival Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which sadly ran for only one season. I could be wrong, but I don't think any of the main stars (or even guest stars) on Sorkin's Studio 60 ever appeared on 30 Rock. Was there an unofficial ban? Taboo? Anyway, good to see David in this episode, which also featured Al Gore.

Greenzo's appearances on the Today Show was absolutely hilarious.

The one where David Schwimmer guest stars
studioAT2 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I've tried on several occasions to get into '30 Rock', but even this episode featuring David Schwimmer of 'Friends' fame didn't do a lot for me.

Yes, it's smartly written stuff, with lots of the writers/producers being recognisable names from other far better shows, but the characters just don't connect with me, and that I think is why I can't join the many people who love this show so much.
