Big Brother Season 23 handed CBS the keys to an impressive Wednesday night. The long-running reality series returned to CBS scoring a 1.0 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 4.01 million viewers, becoming both the highest-rated and most-watched program of the evening.
The latest season premiere of Big Brother, which came after a bit of a casting shuffle, surpassed the 2020 premiere. Wednesday’s opener saw minor gains in viewership but steady ratings from the Season 22 Premiere in August 2020 .
Later in the evening CBS welcomed back Love Island for junior season. Love Island drew in a 1.80 million viewers and a 0.43 rating in the 18-49 demo. While ratings remained stable from the 2020 season, viewership dropped 7% from the Season 2 premiere.
Despite impressive showings, both Big Brother and Love Island have some catching up to do to match their pre-pandemic season openers.

CBS kicked off its reality-heavy summer slate on Wednesday with healthy ratings.
Big Brother kicked off its revamped 23rd season with 4 million total viewers and a 1.0 rating in the demo.
This is right on par with what the debut of Big Brother All-Stars did in the demo last August, and given that many shows have dropped hard this year, this is a solid return.
In fact, the veteran series was up 10% in total viewers.
For comparison purposes, the No. 1 in-season show on CBS was The Equalizer, and it averaged a 1.2 rating. Its No. 2 show was FBI at a 0.8 rating.
Big Brother has always had a strong digital footprint, so this is a successful debut.
After that, Love Island returned for its third season with 1.8 million viewers and a 0.4 rating -- on par with its prior average.
While the numbers look smaller, the show has been a strong streaming option on ViacomCBS streaming services.

ABC revived The Dating Game this Monday night, but with a celebrity twist. Is the tweaked redo worthy of a big dating game kiss?
As I did with the new incarnations of Card Sharks, Name That Tune and surely others, I as a man of a certain age am here to compare The Celebrity Dating Game to its original incarnation, which most famously (in my opinion) was hosted in the ’70s by Jim Lange. Here, as host, we get Zooey Deschanel… and Michael Bolton, because, best I can surmise, they needed a way to drop clues about the mystery celeb,...

How are we supposed to live without Michael Bolton and Zooey Deschanel? Turns out we won’t have to. Bolton and Deschanel have signed on to host “The Celebrity Dating Game,” a new take on the format that has been picked up by ABC for eight one-hour episodes.
You read that right. Bolton. Deschanel. Celebrities. “Dating Game.” As Bolton might croon, TV is Back on Its Feet Again. Produced by Sony Pictures TV, the original “Dating Game” ran on ABC from 1965 to 1973, and has inspired several updates since then (the most recent being a syndicated revival in the late 1990s).
This one, with Bolton and Deschanel at the helm, promises “a wry wink at modern dating with a star-studded roster of celebrity singles in their pursuit to find love. Offering a spin on the classic dating show, the celebrity guests will remain a mystery as one lucky suitor is chosen...

It seems as though the past few years have brought a resurgence of game shows, which were once a staple of both daytime and primetime television viewing. As a kid, I relished snow days and sick days when I could miss school and curl up on the sofa to watch all my favorites – “Pyramid,” “Family Feud” and “Password” were just a few. Every day after school I rushed through my homework so that I’d have time to watch “Tattletales” and “Tic Tac Dough.”
Game shows go all the way back to the days of radio, with one such program becoming the first game show to air on broadcast television – “Truth or Consequences” debuted on July 1, 1941, and before long the genre became a popular form of entertainment. All “Big Three” networks carried a variety of game shows on both daytime and primetime schedules until their popularity began to fizzle in the ’80s and ’90s.

Sunday was fairly quiet in regards to ratings action in primetime, with CBS’ 60 Minutes leading the pack in ratings and viewership delivering a 0.7 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 9.02 million viewers. The rest of the network’s night was populated by reruns of NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS, with each having the largest audience in its hour. CBS won the evening overall in viewers.
ABC meanwhile topped the night in the demo. After a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? climbed two tenths compared with last week, while Card Sharks ticked up three tenths. The night ended with an encore of The Rookie.
NBC started the night with repeats of Weakest Link, The Wall and Chicago Med and wrapped its offerings with a fresh Dateline (0.3, 2.08M), which held steady in the demo.

Mattel Television is set to develop a game show inspired by the game Whac-a-Mole, the company announced Monday.
The toymaker is developing the series with “America’s Got Talent” producer Fremantle.
Here is how Mattel is describing the series: The Whac-a-Mole game show will turn the iconic game into an elimination competition during which opposing teams will use their skill, strength and endurance to face off to become the ultimate Whac-a-Mole champion. The unscripted series will incorporate life-sized Whac-a-Mole, races and obstacle courses, along with a surprising twist that will awe participants and audiences alike.
“Whac-a-Mole is a beloved, action-packed arcade game with a deep fan following, and the interactive nature and comedic energy of the game makes it a great franchise for episodic television,” said Adam Bonnett, Executive Producer, Mattel Television, who is leading the development project for Mattel. “Jayson and the team at Fremantle have had unparalleled success creating...

Joel McHale’s “Card Sharks” was no guppy on Sunday, when ABC was first place in the key demo’s ratings. Of course, it helped a great deal that there was no football competition. Leading in to “Card Sharks,” Jimmy Kimmel’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” also grew week to week. The CW’s “Batwoman” added more eyeballs to the previous Sunday’s tally, though it stayed steady in the adults 18-49 demographic. Sunday was the NFL’s off week between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, which airs on CBS. The setting for Super Bowl Lv will be Tampa Bay, Fla.’s Raymond James Stadium, home to the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s the first time a Super Bowl team will play the big game in its own stadium. The NFL is expecting 22,000 fans to attend Sunday’s game. Of them, 7,500 are vaccinated healthcare workers.

NBC’s Sunday Night Football ruled the night Sunday with the Pittsburgh-Buffalo game delivering a 3.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 14.18 million viewers, with the Bills’ 26-15 victory in the meeting of two of the NFL’s top teams up a tenth early numbers from last week’s game between Denver and Kansas City.
As with all live sporting events, the Nielsen Live+Same Day data are likely to be adjusted in finals.
Fox’s Sunday animation block received its own boost from NFL overrun, with those final numbers also facing adjustments. As of now, preliminary fast affiliates have The Simpsons doubled in the demo and then some compared with last week. Bless the Harts, Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy also gained.
At CBS, 60 Minutes took a stumble from last week. NCIS: Los Angeles held steady, while a fresh episode of NCIS: New Orleans took a dip.

CBS had “A Holly Dolly Christmas” with Dolly Parton last night.
The singer’s holiday special delivered around 6.2 million viewers and a 0.7 average rating among adults 18-49, a decent result for the network, especially considering it was up against “Sunday Night Football.” Later on, “NCIS: Los Angeles” scored a 0.4 rating and around 4.2 million viewers.
A tight, yet not particularly thrilling game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos delivered a 3.8 rating and just over 14 million total viewers for NBC. Those figures are subject to adjustment later in the day once more accurate measurement become available. The game itself ended in a 22-16 victory for the defending Super Bowl champions.
