An Unusual Makeover
banerjeenirmalya12 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A unique talent requires the proper platform to prosper. But what if the opportunity is laced with sinister intentions?

Srijit Mukherji's latest film " Vinci Da" is the tale of an obsessed make up artist who values his craft more than anything. His principled approach towards work has made it difficult for him to 'adjust' to the cinema circles. Vinci Da in order to make ends meet has to stick to bridal makeups and local theatres. But that craving to showcase his skill was eating him from the inside. In walks Adi Bose with a lucrative offer and the life of the unsuspecting make up artist becomes topsy-turvy.

Mukherji pitches a taut and original psychological thriller involving two borderline characters whose lives get intertwined amidst a series of ghastly crimes. The tight linear screenplay builds pace gradually and keeps one engrossed till the very end. If the script is the film's strongest asset, then the next one is Rudranil's performance as the titular character. This clearly is his magnum opus wherein we see a display of myriad of emotions - ranging from passion to tenderness, violence to helplessness. One subject which Indian films rarely deal with is male vulnerability. This is where Rudra pulls off a realistic effort with elan. Others like Sohini as Rudra's stammering girlfriend Jaya and Anirban as the no-nonsense cop chip in well. Although a bit more of Anirban would have done more justice to the plot.

Now coming to Ritwik Chakraborty as Adi Bose, the self proclaimed Ubermensch. In a non-whodunit thriller, it is imperative for the plot to demonize the anti-hero. Although Riddhi's introduction scene provided the perfect background for the evil to blossom, unfortunately Ritwik's character fails to intimidate. At most he troubles the protagonist and the audience is aware of his crimes, but there isn't that element of fear in him. I wouldn't atleast remember Adi Bose for long.

Editing and Direction is top notch. The twist though predictable to a certain extent was impressive. Anupam Roy's "Tomar Moner Bhetor" and "Gas Balloon" gels well with the sequences.

Overall after phenomenal success of Baishey Shrabon and Chotuskone, Mukherji does full justice to his reputation as a master of thrillers with this one.

True achievement
SnigBhaumik6 November 2019
A deserving yet struggling makeup artist meets a stranger for a challenging job. The actual character of the job turns his life upside down. And the stranger creates a quite a mayhem in Kolkata with his (un)willing help.

This movie is a real achievement for Srijit Mukherji, Rudranil Ghosh and Ritwick Chakraborty. All the actors did brilliant job. The screenplay is brilliant and intelligent. Only sometimes I felt some over-acting from Rudranil. Ritwick alone carried the film brilliantly. The overall story is amazing to continuous grip on the audience. However, the name "serial lawyer" does not make much sense, as not much law exercises has happened.

Bravo Srijit. Hope more like this will come from you.

A MUST-WATCH PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
kinshasanakamura30 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
'Vinci Da' is an interesting watch for a movie watcher, as with it, Srijit returns to what he does best, thrillers. Vinci Da qualifies as one of the best thrillers Tollywood has made in the recent years, and keeps the viewer intrigued until the end.

The song used in the trailer, sung by the current Bengali heartthrob Noble, sums up the movie quite well, as its lines carry meanings that can only be understood later on in the movie, along with references to Lalon Fakir and Leonardo Da Vinci. Another track by Anupam Roy adds some mixed emotion, while the music played during the climactic scene is as epic as it needs to be.

The climactic scene, and the lead-up to it is indeed one of the finest I've ever seen in Benhali thrillers, although it suffers from a lack of pace at certain periods. Let my words not fool you, the film is never, and I mean, never, boring. The interval comes after a breeze, as the story moves forward with character introductions. After the interval, the plot tenses, and that too for all the good reasons.

The character of Aadi Bose is as chilling as it needs to be. The younger version of the character, played by Riddhi, simply kills his father, and shows enough brain to kill him before his 18th birthday, thus exempting him from a sure death sentence. The wit comes from an eternal love for law and its consequences, which makes it somewhat mentally distorted.

The older, (im)mature version of Aadi Bose is even more dangerous. His criminal record (patricide) bars him from achieving his dream of being a criminal lawyer, and he is not content to give advice to top lawyers. Thus, he becomes a serial killer (lawyer). His faulty ideals leads him to believe he is fighting for justice, but the face of the innocent people being killed says otherwise.

Aadi is extremely dangerous, murderous, captivating and somehow truthful. The way he blackmails Vinci Da and captures evidence is the signs of a complex mind.

Vinci Da, on the other hand, provides the title of the story. He is like us common Bengalis, only being extremely educated on the subject he loves, and having decency and a backbone to speak against the mediocre bigwigs. Although at first captivated by Aadi's words, his humanity takes over soon enough and the rest is history.

I love how symbolism and foreshadowing is used in the movie, foreshadowing being the most important aspect I search for in a thriller. When Vinci Da turns his beloved into an old woman by the help of prosthetics, we have no idea the same effect will be implemented in the final scene of the movie. Even Vinci Da foretells his intention multiple times while being at Aadi's house.

Biblical symbols are freely used, as Aadi can be taken as the fallen angel, while Vinci Da judges him as the God. I love how Srijit mixed Biblical references of the judgement alongside our very Bengali cultural reference in 'Chor Police'.

Leonardo Da Vinci is in fact an important part of the film. The title wordplays his surname to Vinci Da (Da means elder brother in Bengali), and the poster directly references him. Vitruvian Man, Mona Lisa and Last Supper is directly referenced, as is his mastery in different genres of art and science.

Prosthetics is as shown as an amalgam of art and science, and the movie shows the power of prothestics, and the beauty, all while showing the plight of the skilled costume designers and makeup men of films. Fittingly, the lead makeup man and costume director gets seperate credits, just after the director gets it.

Ritwick has literally proved himself to be head and shoulders above all other actors in Bengali cinema, and this role solidifies his place. Riddhi shows unmatched courage in a performance not expected from such a young chap, and yes, it still comes as a shock when we know how impressive his acting can be. Sohini shows stature, plight and character in the short screen time she gets. Among the victims/villains, Bharat Kaul seemed to me the best actor. Rudranil as the titular character was nice, although at times his acting felt a bit flat to me. Not being rude to him at all, he's excellent, but sharing screentime with Ritwick must have some effects on the viewer.

Srijit is finally showing shadows of his old self, after a few melodramatic flicks. The cinematography is excellent, especially the full shots of the broken house, where Ritwick's and Sohini's character meets. Plus, the lines are crisp, while not being idiotic one-liners.

CONCLUSION

Vinci Da is a legit thriller, with full cultural references, excellent character work and a plot to fall far; watch it for the performance by Ritwick and Rudranil.

An entertaining crime drama that tries to pose itself as an intelligent psychological thriller
Jithindurden18 July 2019
An entertaining crime drama that tries to pose itself as an intelligent psychological thriller. The first half of the film was well crafted in a way that even when there was confusion over the idea they wanted to present it was finely handled so that it was always almost perfect. But afterwards, it was kind of becoming what it was criticising in the first half but not too much, just part of being Indian mainstream cinema even when it is a regional film without the top star cast.

Psychological thrillers are very rare when it comes to Tollywood industry. Among them, very few are well executed. This movie is a gem. Good storyline, excellent cast and when it comes to direction, no one can compete Srijit Mukherjee. This movie is surely one of the best Bengali movies of all time.

Excellent piece of work!
shmctg11 June 2019
Srijit is one one of my favorite directors. Specially I like his thriller products. After long time, he's back with another Crime thriller movie. Albeit the movie isn't very much twist ending one and not that kind of nail biting. But I think the director, Mr. Srijit Mukherje, has not wanted to create those things. What he wants to portrait by this one, I think, he's successful indeed. The way he has told the story with a disturbed tone and with colourless colour it made me to give 9 out of 10. Good job! :)

Mr. Mukherji Could Have Surely Done Better.
SoumikBanerjee199629 January 2021
"Vinci Da" essays a disparate commixture of Thrill & Drama constituents. However, such devoted pursuit in one way or another begets blatant frailties here. As a forthright thriller it might've worked, yet I have my reservations nonetheless.

Methodized as a scrupulous thriller, the narrative only works upto an extent. The simple reason being its inability to persevere a level of consistency for the entirety of the runtime. Frequent tonal alterations coupled with disarrayed editing paved the way for further contortion. Therefore, every subplot failing to come at a verdict, contrary to all our earnest expectations.

Aside from all the conspicuous demerits, what undeniably work in here are its salient aesthetics, cogent performances and an indelible social commentary; wittily put through by Srijit Mukherji himself. Unsurprisingly so, considering his previous credentials.

Talking about the technicalities, as one would invariably expect; Mr. Mukherji does deliver. Both gloomy & ethereal undertones in Cinematography helped him illustrating the City of Joy i.e. Kolkata in a more shaded manner. Indradeep Dasgupta's gripping Score keeping apace with Anupam Roy's eloquent composition. As a result the condign ambiance quickly found its way through.

Moving onto the performances, wherein the most applauses are readily awaited. Rudranil Ghosh as 'Vinci Da' exhibits a certain vulnerability that consequently generates an affinity for this particular character. Which in return leaves a lasting impression. So does Ritwick Chakraborty with his usual enigmatic screen presence. Riddhi Sen & Anirban Bhattacharya; two accomplished personas in their own rights yet we get to see them for a very brief period of time. Alas!

To summarise, it has only been a fair enough showing, certainly not upto par. Primarily because it falls short of delivering on its pre-emptive promises. Although as for a Social Critique & on a Performance Perspective; this indeed succeeded in showing its mettle.

Real Gem Of Movie-Vinci Da
abhineet1505 June 2019
The movie is a gem. The movie is a masterpiece. The movie is marvelous Feat.

Such movies deserve to be watched by world wide audience.

Bengali movies are way ahead of Bollywood in terms of content except for few masala Bengali movies and actors like Jeet and Dev.

Other actors and Directors are truely applaudable.

Good Movie!
asrafulfardin16 August 2022
Seems like this film is more inspired by 2016 Bangladeshi film "Aynabaji" directed by Amitabh Reza Chowdhury. Though the plots are different, the main theme is pretty Clear.

Must Watch "Aynabaji".

Intriguing story, but ...
himadri-598963 November 2019
This is an unusual story of two worthy but unsuccessful minds. Vincida is a makeup artist who is passionate about his job but could not shine in his field due to his straightforward character and Adi Bose is obsessed about law and order while he could not become a lawyer. However, when they meet, their lives change. The plot is unusual and the actors did their job in the best possible way. The cinematography, background scores, make up and everything was wonderful. However, in my opinion, the movie lacks to focus deeper on the two characters. Though its a difficult job when there are two central characters, but I think the movie demands more attention to the minds Adi Bose and Vinci da.. May be the movie could be extended another half an hour to look deeper into the characters making it more of a psychological thriller than a crime thriller. I rate it 5/10 due to this factor. It seemed that the movie got over before even we get to know the characters more deeply.

Pure art and thriller
anjumhaz13 July 2022
Movies with lawyers are always my favorite. And Vinci, Nietzsche, ubermensch- all combined to turn this movie into a pure art.

The cast was excellent. Ritwick Chakroborty, Rudranil Ghosh, Anirban Bhattacharya, Riddhi Sen, Sohini Sarkar- everyone gave their best in the movie. However different and difficult their roles were, they played so gracefully. If you are a thriller fan, this movie with its local and global context can be a great suit for your weekend watch!

Thanks to Srijit for giving another superb thriller after 'Baishe Srabon'.

The Ubermensch.
abasu081929 June 2019
Easily one of the finest thrillers India has ever produced, "Vinci Da" is an unique psychological thriller by renowned Bengali director Srijit Mukherjee. And as you'd expect from Srijit Mukherjee usually, reaching a conclusion for the movie's subplot is a subject of debate. And that's where the "psychological thriller" part starts making even more sense than a simple tag of "crime thriller."

Right from the beginning, the film takes you to a journey of questioning of yourself. Coupled with numerous layers and a Christopher Nolan-like-tone to make it even harder to find one answer. But while finding them, you'll never be bored. The two hour length of the film was justified and it never let get off the chair. And, while the subplot keeps influencing you to judge the Ritwick Chatterjee's character in an unorthodox manner, the original plot rather pushes you farther away from it & forces you to believe 'Aady Bose' is a psychopath. But what exactly is the term 'psychopath' again? That question comes into the spotlight after Rudranil Sengupta's countless attempts of showing the good-man-way of our beloved society. However, right till the very end, your brain will be bamboozled, you'll be in utter disbelief of your own morale & will keep on thinking about the term "Ubermensch." And yet, you'll most likely fail to reach a logical conclusion of differentiating "the good and the bad and the ugly" here. That's how magnificent the direction by Srijit Mukherjee was.

But is direction even possible without proper casting? Nope, mostly & Shree Venkatesh Films surely acknowledged the fact to gift us the most perfect cast ever, where everybody got their moments for shining and justifying their roles while setting up the tone for the film. The most underrated aspect of the film being Sohini Sarkar's adorable performance & how she ended up being the most important part of the "story written by god." What accompanied the cast so sweetly was definitely the crispy dialogue writing, fantastic cinematography (which always felt like watching a Christopher Nolan movie of his early days), way of narration & of course, situational songs with witty lyrics and a brilliant piece of background scoring.

Even after having the privilege of all these, the film by no means had a satisfying crunchy ending (even though the climax was fabulous). However, there's the point that did the film really want to present a perfect ending? I believe not. Thus, it's too hard for me to point out flaws here.

So, if you ask me, I'd probably tell you to go and live this brilliant journey worth of 2 hours to find out what "Ubermensch" means. Undoubtedly, "Vinci Da" will always remain within Top 50 Indian Thrillers ever.

Overrated garbage
tanim-jubaer24 January 2021
Srijit is a top director with outstanding track record but this time he completely wasted talented actors like Ritwick and Rudranil.

The main idea is not fresh and screenplay is odd. The best part for me was Riddhi's part, he is a true gem.
