If you didn't see the opening credits of this show, you would think you were watching an episode of GILLIGANS ISLAND. Strange, but true.
Maynard is the star here, a student in Professor Burkhart's (Jean Byron) anthropology class, and the topic is cave men! There's also a sightseeing field trip involved, taking the class to the famous Wasatchi Caves, a popular site for cave men back in the stone age.
Maynard --naturally-- wanders away from the group, into a cave and discovers a real, life prehistoric man called "Ugh Ug," played to the hilt by famous movie heavy Mike Mazurki. Yes, the cave and all the trimmings, plus Mazurki, is sooo like an bit from Gilligan's Island, and about just as fun.
Applause for Bob Denver, acting more like Gilligan than Maynard, and obviously having a blast. Written by comedy master Arnold Horwitt, who later wrote for the PATTY DUKE SHOW, which co-starred Jean Byron.
In fact, Jean has the most dialogue in this episode, and in later years commented she always got called back to the show because she was able to memorize everything and generally get it all done in a single take! Not EZ. Also look for Raymond Bailey, as Dean Magruder, who was also appearing on the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.
