Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell had lost out 20 times before last night’s ceremony.
Forget Moonlight, Emma Stone or even Asghar Fahardi, the most heart-warming winner at the 2017 Oscars was Kevin O’Connell, who picked up the best sound mixing award for Hacksaw Ridge.
Sound engineer O’Connell had previously been nominated 20 times without winning, leading The Guardian to dub him the “unluckiest nominee in the history of the Academy Awards”.
After finally winning the Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge alongside Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace, O’Connell said: “I can’t even tell you the experience that it was for me. As much as I thought I was going to know what it felt like, I didn’t.
“And I have to tell you, it was the greatest feeling in my entire life and I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had, especially to work with these guys and I’m so grateful. It’s amazing...

Amazon executives discussed sales companies, emerging filmmakers, women directors and disruption.
With five films in Official Selection and multiple splashy pre-buys Amazon has been the talk of the festival and market in Cannes this year.
In a wide ranging session yesterday key executives from the company outlined strategy and vision for the retail giant’s rapidly expanding film business.
Jason Ropell, Amazon’s head of worldwide film, told a packed industry session at the UK pavilion that Amazon sees the theatrical experience as vital to its strategy:
“Dispruption can be overplayed,” said Ropell. “We’re not particularly disruptive to the theatrical eco-system. We really believe in the theatrical experience and the romance of the experience. It is an essential component of film. Our customers believe that too. Romance and commercial viability don’t need to be mutually exclusive.”

Spencer Susser last night.
American filmmaker Spencer Susser has a long history in Australia.
He was camera operator on Nash Edgerton's shorts Lucky, Spider and Bear, and collaborated with David Michôd on I Love Sarah Jane, a zombie short starring a pre-Alice Mia Wasikowska, and on his feature debut, Hesher, starring Joseph Gorden-Levitt.
Since then he's directed an episode of the TV show Hemlock Grove, and made several shorts - one of which took out Tropfest's top prize last night.
Shiny is a brief (less than four minutes) stop-motion animation Susser made with fellow Los Angeleno Daniel 'Cloud' Campos, a former dancer who toured with Madonna and is, according to Susser, "quite a well known B-boy".
The pair met through a mutual friend, Australian director Michael Gracey, and discovered a shared "let's-go-make-stuff gene", said Susser.

Psychological thrillers had their heyday in the 90’s with films like Fatal Attraction, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle and plenty of others. What was interesting was their core viewing audience were women. Typically, the films would revolve around an affair or have some sort of sexual context that would give just enough gossipy sleaze to middle America. Earlier this year, you may remember a film being released that seemed like it was somehow transported from the 90’s called The Boy Next Door, another Blumhouse joint like The Gift, starring Jennifer Lopez. If you already forgot about it, Jenny from the Block is a high school teacher who is seduced by a high school student and then the student’s obsession turns nasty. While I haven’t seen the film, this film seems to use the knowledge that people have of true life stories they have seen or heard of...

Yesterday we began our countdown of the best ever TV kisses after an office vote, including the likes of The X-Files, Dawson's Creek and Cheers.
Today, we conclude our poll to find the ultimate TV kiss, and please vote in our poll to select your own choice. If your favourite hasn't made the cut, please leave us a comment below.
The definitive Top 25 TV kisses of all time: 25-11
10. Kirk and Uhura in Star Trek
Sure, it's not the long, drawn-out payoff of a will-they-won't-they sitcom, and you'd be hard pushed to find a less romantic kiss on this list, but for what it represents in the wider cultural history of 1960s America and the extraordinary story behind the day of the shoot, it's hard to beat Captain Kirk and Uhura's iconic Star Trek smooch. As one of the first interracial kisses on national television - and certainly the most...

While the fate of Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise is very much up in the air right now, we do know that at one point, the studio was ready to move forward with both a Sinister Six and Venom spinoff. It’s unclear if they still plan to do so, what with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being a bit of a bomb for them, but the projects are likely still being considered.
So far, no official casting has been confirmed, but the studio obviously has a wishlist of who they’d like to see bring these comic book characters to life. Now, thanks to some leaked Sony emails, we know who they have their eye on.

According to leaked Sony Pictures emails from May, there were a lot of talks about the studio's "Sinister Six" film, which will be directed by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) and focus on Spider-Man villains. Goddard mentioned that he wanted Tom Hardy to play Sandman, but there were also talks of making the villain the movie's comic relief, which is why actors like Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Chris O'Dowd, Michael Pena, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, and Sharlto Copley were also on the list. Goddard wanted Emily Blunt as Scorpia, but Sony Pictures chairman Amy Pascal suggested Emilia Clarke and Rose Byrne. Sean Penn and Woody Harrelson were wanted for Doctor Octopus (the team's leader), while Colin Firth for The Vulture and Channing Tatum for Venom. Other actors like Denzel Washington, George Clooney and Daniel Craig were all considered for various roles.

Sbs's countdown to Tropfest highlights the best of short film ahead of the summer festival. Which are your favourites?
For Australian film fans, Tropfest is a summer essential that has long been celebrated with a picnic in Sydney's Domain – or other outdoor venues broadcasting around the country – while keeping a wary eye on summer storm clouds. So those with both sunbaked and sodden memories of battling the crowds and the elements to champion short films will surely join me in welcoming the launch of Tropfest TV. Launched on Sunday night, the next 12 weeks, SBS2 has the next 12 weeks sorted with weekly thematically linked selections of Tropfest shorts from home and away, including New Zealand, USA and the Middle East.
I can trace my love of short films back to Disney's 1952 classic Lambert the Sheepish Lion. I must have watched that eight-minute fable a thousand times as a child. These days,...

For its first two thirds, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” is busy busy busy with nary a minute to avoid an onslaught of stylized metaphors. People keep asking me Is it like “Moulin Rouge”? Well no, it’s not nearly as unruly because Luhrmann has to stick– more or less- to the F. Scott Fitzgerald text. He has a structure and a story and at some point he has to get with the program. And he does. The last third of his Gatsby is one of the most beautiful, moving films I’ve ever seen. And the first two thirds? They are a joyride through the director’s wild imagination. So we’ve got Leonardo DiCaprio as the mysterious and pained Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as the narrator Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and Tom Buchanan. And then are the secondary roles: Elizabeth Debicki making quite...

Why Watch? Because if you’ve yet to experience the genius of Nash Edgerton‘s wicked little shorts (including the equally as jump-out-of-your-skin Spider), you’re in for a real treat (and probably a scream) from his Sundance short, Bear, which is finally available online a whole year after making me scream bloody murder at last year’s festival. Don’t watch this one at work, you’ll probably just make a fool of yourself when you yell and fall over. It’s just that good. What will it cost? Just a hair less than 11 minutes. Skip Work. If you haven't seen Nash Edgerton's short films before you're in for a treat as Vice has finally brought online Edgerton's latest short film Bear. The film serves as something of a sequel to his previous short, Spider, which we co-wrote with Animal Kingdom writer/director David Michod (who co-wrote this one as well, and was released in front of Edgerton's 2010 feature directorial debut The Square. In fact, back in 2010 I posted all of Edgerton's short films up to that point (eight in total) and they are all still available and online right here, but before you had over there (and trust me after watching the following two short films you're going to want to) check out both Spider and Bear below. Bear stars Edgerton along with Warm Bodies star Teresa Palmer and if I may make a suggestion, watch Spider first, it will help make the opening line to Bear that much funnier.

Though you can currently see her on top of the North American box office in the zom-rom-com “Warm Bodies,” Teresa Palmer went back to her Australian roots recently, starring in the Nash Edgerton-helmed short “Bear.” After making waves on the festival circuit last year stopping in Cannes, Milano, Athens and SXSW , you can now pull up a chair and give it watch in the comfort of your own home courtesy of Vice. Edgerton writes, directs, and stars in the short as a boyfriend who plans the perfect birthday surprise for his girlfriend, played by Palmer. From there, things go wrong. To say any more would be to ruin the surprises, but this one is well worth your time. The short is a sequel to Edgerton’s earlier David Michôd-co-written short “Spider” (which won an award at Sundance in 2008) which saw the same boyfriend character attempt to surprise a girlfriend with equally unintended results.

Today’s film is the 2007 short Spider. The film is directed by Nash Edgerton, who co-wrote the script with Animal Kingdom scribe David Michôd. Edgerton also stars in the short, alongside his brother Joel Edgerton, and reprised this character for his 2011 short Bear. Nash Edgerton built a career for himself as a stuntman, working in movies such as The Matrix and Superman Returns. He can currently be seen in theatres in the Kathryn Bigelow feature Zero Dark Thirty.

About a year ago we showed you an awesomely funny short film called Spider by director Nash Edgerton, brother of actor Joel Edgerton. We now are able to bring you the full short for his other film Bear, which I think is even funnier than Spider. I actually saw this short for the first time last year up at Sundance. It stars Nash Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, and Warwick Thornton.
I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did! I won't go into detail on the story because I don't want to ruin the experience, but here's a brief synopsis to prep you...

Also, I suggest to skip the first 10 seconds of the video because for some reason they tease the surprise. Enjoy the show!

One of our most anticipated titles at Sundance 2013 is The Captain, the short film collaboration between directors Nash Edgerton and Spencer Susser - who have made some of the most memorable short films in recent years: Lucky, Spider, Bear and I Love Sarah Jane.Like Nash did with Bear, in which he cast fellow director Warwick Thornton in a small but crucial role, not to mention his "Must Be Santa" music video for Bob Dylan, which had directors Glendyn Ivin and Luke Doolan prancing around a Christmas party, The Captain stars another director chum. This time Eagle vs Shark and Boy director Taika Waititi is the star of the show. Here's the synopsis:a man wakes up with a hangover, only to discover the consequences of...

Taika Waititi in The Captain
Film-maker Nash Edgerton has received his second nod of approval from the Sundance Film Festival in as many years with his short film The Captain being accepted into competition.
The only Australian short film to get accepted in 2013, The Captain, was co-written by Edgerton, Hesher director Spencer Susser, who also co-directed the film, and Taika Waititi, who wrote and directed the New Zealand film Boy.
It follows Edgerton’s acceptance into the festival for 2012 with his film Bear. This is Edgerton’s sixth short film to feature at the festival.
Edgerton said:
“It’s a huge honor for Spencer and I that The Captain has been selected to screen at Sundance especially seeing as we co-wrote it with our friend Taika Waititi who also stars in it, someone whom we met at Sundance years ago. It’s such a privilege for us to get to make films with our friends.

Nash Edgerton is the type of awesome director who stays silent for months on end, but then suddenly pops up with a cool new short film, such as Spider or Bear, or a new music video, such as his ones for Brandon Flowers and Bob Dylan. Nash also collaborates regularly with his actor brother Joel. They made a modern noir feature, The Square together, and Joel is reportedly writing a second darkly-comic feature for Nash to direct. They've also just completed filming Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty together - both in front of the camera this time. Somewhere in between they reunited again to make Nash's new music video for Bob Dylan, for his song Duquesne Whistle - making this the third music video Nash has directed for the iconic singer-songwriter. Check out the video below, which includes a cameo...

Not content to just be known as “Joel‘s brother,” Nash Edgerton has, in his own time, crafted original and surprising work — the short film Spider and its follow-up, Bear, being the most notable — that’s now landed another job with Bob Dylan. In preparation for his 35th album, Tempest, the planet’s greatest living musician has put out a music video for its debut track, “Duquesne Whistle,” which Edgerton injects with his own violence-laced humor.
What starts out as a sweet chronicle of one man’s bid to garner a woman’s attention transforms, unexpectedly, into the comically (?) violent account of how it could all go so hideously wrong. (You could probably spot him yourself, but, yes, that’s Joel Edgerton as the Irish cap-wearing thug.) Dylan makes an appearance alongside some tough-looking fellows, though the visual appearance is little more than a funny cameo.

The writer/director and producer duo of an Australian short film which screened in competition at the 2005 Venice Film Festival are looking to create a feature version of the story.
Leon Ford, writer and director of Griff the Invisible, told Encore he and producer Nicole O’Donohue are currently shopping a feature version of their short The Mechanicals at various international film markets.
Ford said: “We started in Cinemart in Rotterdam and we went to Ifm in New York, where we had great responses. Also Nicole was in Cannes recently. It’s just about keeping up a presence.”
The duo have secured international sales agents Paris and New York-based Memento Films, who worked with Cate Shortland on Lore.
The Mechanicals is about factory workers who secretively work within the walls of houses, operating everyday appliances.
O’Donohue produced Griff the Invisible as well as Ford’s short Katoomba and Nash Edgerton’s Spider.

Since the Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom debuted at Sundance in 2010, it has helped to skyrocket star Joel Edgerton‘s career to great heights. The actor was a top contender for many hot projects including The Bourne Legacy, and was in the underseen Warrior, while also booking big roles in Kathryn Bigelow‘s Zero Dark Thirty and Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby.
On the other hand director David Michod has been taking things slower while he decides his next feature, scripting the Joseph Gordon-Levitt drama Hesher, as well as the excellent short Bear, a follow-up to his Spider. Variety now reports what his next feature film will be, as he has confirmed to direct The Rover, from an idea he and Edgerton came up with which follows a “man on a mission to retrieve his stolen car, which contains something invaluable to him.”

Even though the title for Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow‘s latest project is still to be determined, the casting doesn’t seem to be having any problems. EW has informed us that Jennifer Ehle and Nash Edgerton have joined the ensemble for the Bin Laden drama.
With Parks & Rec star Chris Pratt set to head the project, the duo have officially joined the cast which includes, Friday Night Light‘s Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Édgar Ramírez, Mark Strong and Jessica Chastain. Nash will also be joining his brother Joel Edgerton in the film. Mark Boal, who collaborated with Bigelow on The Hurt Locker, is returning to the writing chair, with the film detailing the take down of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.
As of right now, it is unclear what specific role Ehle will play. She was most recently seen in such films as Contagion and The Ides of March, which...

Spider Short Film. Nash Edgerton‘s Spider (2007) short film stars Nash Edgerton, Mirrah Foulkes, Joel Edgerton, Chum Ehelepola, Bruno Xavier, and Tony Lynch. Spider‘s plot synopsis: “Jill is annoyed with Jack, ignoring his attempts to get her to smile as she drives a city road. She stops for petrol, and while she’s filling the tank, he goes into the station’s mini-mart and buys a bouquet, chocolates…Has Jack made things right again?…Jack and Jill are always hurting each others feelings. But like Mum said, Its all fun and games until someone loses an eye.”
I yelled out loud during a certain part of this short film. Wow. Nicely done and realistic as well. It is extremely rare that a short film gets an emotional reaction out of you the way this one does. A very surprising short film.

Here's an hilariously shocking short film called Spider that was directed by Nash Edgerton. The short was released back in 2007, but it wasn't brought to my attention until after I saw Edgerton's latest follow-up short, Bear, up at The Sundance Film Festival. So you may have already seen this, but today was the first time for me, and it was quite a funny, yet unsettling, experience. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I laughed at this film, but I did. When you see the short you'll understand why. I've also included a little teaser for Bear, which has yet to be released online in its entirety.
Here's a little description of Spider:
Jack and Jill are always hurting each others feelings. But like Mum said, Its all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
Check out the video below, and tell us what you think!

Spider, the short film by Nash Edgerton, isn't exactly new. In fact, it's pretty old. The IMDb lists it as 2007 but we've never posted it here on /Film. So, on the off chance you haven't seen this fantastic short, now is the time. Edgerton, the brother of accomplished actor Joel Edgerton, co-wrote, starred in and directed this short before making the feature film, The Square. (If you saw that film in theaters in the Us, you might have seen the short playing before it.) Spider was so successful that it spawned a sequel, Bear, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Both films share over the top, dark humor and super impressive filmmaking. After the jump, watch Spider and get a tease from Bear. Here's Spider. Below, I'll give a little tease about the sequel, Bear. Pretty twisted, right? Bear picks up, not right where Spider leaves off, but soon after.

Despite the whole internet-age thing, many filmmakers still seem remarkably reluctant when it comes to putting their short films online. Every year when I attend short film festivals I am blown away by some of what I see, but then when I try to track those films down -- even many months later, allowing for the films to complete their festival run -- many are not online. When I spoke to Nash Edgerton in the interview published this week, he had some interesting anecdotal evidence to bring to the table: "When Spider was uploaded on YouTube that was when it started having a real life. A lot of people are still very precious; they don't put their short films online, but we've put up pretty much all of...

Nash Edgerton is one of the most exciting cats in filmmaking today. It's strange to still call him upcoming, but while his style is signature; his videos insanely viral; his fans among the most famous; and his mark on indie genre movies unmistakable, you still get the sense he's untapped talent. Here's a short CV for those who've just arrived: Nash started his career as a stuntman, working on everything from Street Fighter to Star Wars, including as stunt double to his actor brother Joel -- currently on The Great Gatsby. He's directed nine short films, specialising in the blackly funny and action-heavy, three of them written with David Michôd -- who made last year's searing crime drama Animal Kingdom. One of these shorts, Spider (featuring Nash...

July 2012 is...huge. And it's not particularly because there's a lot of films releasing that month; actually, it probably has the least amount of films opening in the entire year of 2012. But July will be huge for two reasons, and two reasons alone; The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises. Both have had mounds of anticipation put upon them, and have been highly awaited by almost everyone. And in July, both will see the light of day. August is big, but only because it has a lot of releases; other than The Bourne Legacy and Total Recall, there's not a lot in terms of big budget genre affair. But even then, August has its positives. To find the scope of one of the biggest parts of the year, I suggest you hit the jump right now! Time for Part 4.

Bear carries the same hilariously shocking tradition as Spider; Jack (played by co-writer/director Nash Edgerton) has good intentions with his pranks on his girlfriend Emelie (Teresa Palmer) but doesn't have a filter with them and he winds up facing unplanned painful consequences. Edgerton started his career out as a stuntman, and these two films have a heavy influence on that trade. As I've said before, I love everything that Edgerton and his crew Blue-Tongue Films have made so interviewing him about Bear just made sense. We caught up a few days before the festival ended at Screen Australia to talk about Bear, the possibility of a Spider feature, and what he's working on next. Check out the interview after the break.

Blake Williams and I have our alternative lists ready for you --- a top 20 list of films that have caught our attention for reasons X, Y and Z. Without further ado, here is the list: Arirang (Kim Ki-duk) in the Un Certain Regard Kim - is one of our strongest and most eclectic Korean filmmakers. Making everything from bloody genre works to contemplative, wordless bliss, there doesn't seem to be much he can't do as long as he has a strong enough concept to fit his style. This film seems to be explicitly about Kim, either a self-portrait or autobiography, auto-critique or perhaps narcissistic navel-gazing.
