Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is officially out. The movie he’d risked so much for, his dream project that the actor was cooking for many years, trying to get the funding for it… In the end, Costner took a massive gamble and poured tens of millions of his own money into making Horizon — but we severely underestimated just how much money it was.
Kevin Costner Spent a Fortune on Horizon
There are two major ways in which Costner took immense risks to make Horizon come true. The first one is, of course, his career: the Western star lost his lead part in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone to work on Horizon and likely rejected some other offers to make time for his own project. But that’s not even the main thing.
For many years, Costner was failing to find production companies willing to fund Horizon.

Talking to Kevin Costner after the Cannes premiere of “Horizon: An American Saga,” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson asked the filmmaker if he thought he could improve on Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone.” Costner starred as John Dutton for five seasons; he is unmentioned in the press release for the sixth, which just began production.
“No, of course not,” he said.
However, Costner noted, it could be the other way around: During the second season of “Yellowstone” in 2019, he said, Sheridan was looking for writers. He and Baird sent him the “Horizon” script. Thompson noted that both “1883” and “Horizon” share a wagon train story.
“So I don’t know if there’s any duplications there,” Costner said. “Whether he borrowed something, only he’d have to admit to.” (Reps for Sheridan did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Vague accusations of “borrowing” aren’t new to “Yellowstone.” It’s a popular topic on fan sites,...

This year will mark the end of ‘Yellowstone,’ even though seasons 6 and 7 were originally planned for it. However, despair not, even though creator Taylor Sheridan says the ending was rushed, he did confirm that he was still able to wrap it up the way it would have been done even if there were subsequent seasons.
Prior to Kevin Costner exiting the series to work on his own Western drama ‘Horizon,’ the show’s first four and a half seasons have revolved around the Dutton family, with patriarch Costner’s John Dutton at the helm. However, Costner has agreed to return to wrap up the series. But what kind of ending will it now get?

Timing is everything — and where Yellowstone is concerned, it seems to have had everything to do with Kevin Costner’s departure as the Dutton family’s beleaguered patriarch, John. In an attempt to set the record straight about his exit ahead of Season 5B, the Golden Globe winner tells GQ that yes, ultimately, scheduling was to blame. Whether because of Covid, strikes or other issues, “we very rarely started [production] when we said we would, and we didn’t finish when we said we would.

Just yesterday, we reported how Kevin Costner is struggling to find someone who will help him finance the third and fourth parts of his planned Western epic – Horizon. Costner is an acclaimed filmmaker and Oscar winner who has left us with many memorable roles, but the guy likes the Western genre, both as an actor and as a director. After the success of Yellowstone, Costner embarked on an epic journey to explain how the Americans colonized the West, planning to make a four-part movie epic. The first two parts will be released in cinemas this year, with the first film premiering in Cannes only recently.
Costner has invested a lot of his own money into financing the projects and is now looking for studios who are willing to give money to him to finish the project. But, based on the first critics’ reviews, Costner won’t have much luck in his endeavor,...

Kevin Costner feels Francis Ford Coppola’s pain. Both invested their own millions — “just shy of $100 million” for Costner, he told me, and $120 million for Coppola — in ambitious movies that no one else wanted to fund.
“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (which debuted out-of-competition at Cannes on May 19 to the extended standing ovation that is de rigueur these days) landed New Line/Warner Bros. as its stateside theatrical distributor in what Costner said was a “very modest” deal. He added that “Horizon” sold well to foreign territories at Cannes via K5, although it was slow going at first.
Coppola is still hoping someone will pay him to release his film. Costner is concerned that the auteur is vulnerable. “There’s people that will take advantage of you and I fear people will do that to Francis,” he said. “I’m worried about him, too. I feel they will do that to him.

Kevin Costner arrived at the Cannes Film Festival surrounded by his children on Sunday night for the premiere of his new film Horizon: An American Saga. The appearance marked a rare reunion of the entire Costner family on the international stage, showcasing the close-knit bonds that have defined this Hollywood dynasty.
The Costner family looked elegant together as they walked the red carpet. Kevin, known for iconic movies like Dances with Wolves and Field of Dreams, led the way with his engaging presence.
His daughters Lily, Grace Avery and Annie looked beautiful in their dresses, and his sons Cayden Wyatt and Hayes looked dashing in their suits.
The family reunion on the French Riviera showed how close the Costners are, even though Kevin divorced his wife, Nicole Baumgartner, last year in an acrimonious divorce. He has worked hard to maintain strong bonds with all his children from his previous marriages.

After over a year hiatus, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has begun production in Montana, as earlier promised and then revealed by Paramount Network Monday. The Western drama series approaches its close with the final episodes predicted to land in November later this year.
Four and a half seasons of the Taylor Sheridan series have followed the Dutton Family, led by patriarch Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who oversees the largest cattle ranch in the modern-day United States. The Dutton family faces constant challenges from those at its borders — the growing Bozeman, Montana, the fictional Indian reservation of Broken Rock and America’s first national park.
With several prequel series and a contemporary spinoff in the works, the original installment was originally set to conclude at the end of 2023, but the WGA and SAG strikes delayed production on the final episodes.

However, shockwaves went through the news when his wife of eighteen years, Christine Baumgartner, filed for divorce about a year ago. Furthermore, early rumors that started swirling about the reasons behind the move blamed his Yellowstone project for causing conflicts in the actor’s work-life balance.

A director, a producer, a writer, an investor, and a movie star walk into a bar, and the barman tells them: “The usual, Kevin?” That’s right: Kevin Costner was all these things for his latest movie Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, and he sunk a lot of passion, effort, and money into making it a reality. That’s why Horizon’s recent premiere at Cannes was perhaps Costner’s most important in his entire career.

As ever, Cannes is providing serious buzz. It’s a key part of the festival circuit – films screen, conversation proliferates, and exciting must-sees come out of it all. And amid the myriad takes on Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the debut of Kevin Costner’s Horizon, and the arrival of another new Yorgos Lanthimos joint Kinds Of Kindness, there’s one film that’s got everybody talking: The Substance. It’s an upcoming body horror from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (previously behind Revenge), and has provoked all kinds of conversation – in part for giving Demi Moore her biggest role in years.
Since The Substance has been acquired for distribution by Mubi, there’s already a teaser for the film. It’s only brief, but give it a watch here:

Kevin Costner saddled up to the Campari Lounge at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday for a 75-minute conversation about his life and career that was funny, revealing and even tear-jerking.
It was all part of The Hollywood Reporter executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg’s annual taping at Cannes of his Awards Chatter podcast, and took place just hours before Costner unveiled his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, at the festival.
During the lively conversation, Costner seemed energized by the crowd, at times standing up and wandering toward them, or facing the picturesque view of the Croisette and pretending to have a conversation with himself (or a wise adviser) wherein he’d interrogate his decisions, like spending his own money on his movies.

There’s something distinctly charming and captivating about the genre of Western in cinema. So captivating, in fact, that some actors dedicate their entire careers to this particular genre — and Kevin Costner might just be the best example of that.
For decades, the man has always been up in the saddle with a gun in his hand, and he’s still true to himself, roaming the prairies in his latest movie.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon Was a Huge Gamble
It’s borderline impossible to imagine Kevin Costner betraying the genre of Western, and the actor has proven it time and time again. For years, Costner has been nurturing his idea of the perfect American Saga, but he had no luck in finding producers for it — but recently, he did, and he jumped at the opportunity immediately.

It’s official. Yellowstone Season 6 has started filming, with Paramount Networks making the announcement via a press release sent out this am. While the final cast list wasn’t announced, it was revealed that the show will begin airing its final episodes in November. This announcement comes less than 24 hours after Kevin Costner’s multi-part epic, Horizon, made its Cannes debut.
Will Kevin Costner be back?
As Yellowstone trots towards its final episodes, there is still a ranch full of unanswered questions. Near the top of that list is, Will Kevin Costner be returning? In a (terrific) recent interview with Deadline Costner seemed to put a definitive answer to speculation. He says, “Well, I haven’t felt good about it the last year, what with the way they’ve talked about it. It wasn’t truthful. So now I’m talking about a little bit about what the real truth of it was.

It’s the beginning of the end for “Yellowstone,” as production has now begun on the final episodes of the megahit series.
The show is once again shooting in Montana on the second half of its fifth season. The first half, which consisted of eight episodes, originally aired between November 2022 and January 2023. The second and final installment, which will consist of six episodes, is slated to debut on Paramount Network in November.
As was previously reported, production on the final episodes of the series was delayed in 2023 due to the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes that shut down most of Hollywood. It was also previously reported that “Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner would be exiting the series in Season 5, reportedly over his desire to focus on the epic Western feature “Horizon,” which would have seriously impacted his availability to film “Yellowstone.” The first part of the film is scheduled to be...

Production is underway in Montana on the second half of the fifth and final season of Yellowstone, Paramount Network said today. As previously announced, the series, which has been on hiatus since January 2023, is slated to return for the final episodes in November.
Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. He is currently filming Chapter 3 of Horizon. At a Cannes press conference, Costner said he had taken a break to go to Cannes and is heading back to continue filming.

He is currently filming Chapter 3 of Horizon. At a Cannes press conference, Costner said he had taken a break to go to Cannes and is heading back to continue filming.

Scale, sweep, or schadenfreude; whatever you might be seeking in the films of Kevin Costner, you tend to walk away with the vistas. Think of the golden plains and stampeding buffalo of his directorial debut Dances with Wolves; or the jaw-dropping aerial shot of scavengers circling the atoll in Waterworld; and lest we forget The Postman, a work even the most harebrained viewers haven’t found the energy to reappraise, which still left you with an image of The Sound of Music projected onto a quarry wall, not to mention that statue of himself constructed for the film’s whacky finale. For better or worse, they aren’t easily forgotten.

Kevin Costner’s new Western epic may have gotten a 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes, but once critics got back from festival screenings to their hotel rooms, they posted reviews for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 that were far less enthusiastic.
Horizon is the first film in writer-director-star Costner’s massive four-picture gamble that he famously leveraged one of his homes to help finance (spending $38 million out of pocket for the $90 million-budgeted film). Chapter 1 is three hours and is largely focused on setting the stage — introducing a sprawling ensemble of characters, with the promise of more dramatic events to come in the remaining films.
There are not a large number of reviews for the post-Civil War Western tale so far, but some of the early critiques are pretty harsh. The most common complaint is the film doesn’t feel like cinema so much as a trio of back-to-back episodes of a new TV series,...

Isn’t it remarkable how sometimes, amid rumors and alleged betrayals, the bonds between co-stars can illuminate the true spirit of camaraderie in Tinseltown? In the movie business, loyalty can be hard to come by. But for Kevin Costner, his Horizon: An American Saga co-star Sienna Miller has proven to be a true friend and ally.
While the Yellowstone star may have felt betrayed by Taylor Sheridan, he can take solace in the fact that Miller has his back. Their mutual admiration and respect for each other was on full display as they walked the red carpet for the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga.

Kevin Costner first conceived of the multi-part story that would become “Horizon: An American Saga” back in 1988. Even after two films completed, he’s still got a way to go to finish it.
Part one of the “Manifest Destiny” epic premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. Costner, the winner of two Oscars (for directing and producing “Dances With Wolves”) and one Emmy (an Outstanding Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Movie nod for “Hatfields & McCoys”), knew he had to saddle up and come to the south of France. The frequently taciturn 69-year-old has given multiple interviews, in which he’s made it evident how much the partially self-funded project means to him.
At a press conference, he explained that he was three days into production on “Chapter 3” before he shut the company down to engage in promotion full-time. “It was so important to me to come...

Aside from being one of the biggest cinema events in the year, the Cannes Film Festival is also a big market where filmmakers pitch their projects to potential buyers and where many deals are made. We have already reported on the endeavors – some successful, some not (yet) – of the filmmakers in Cannes to find distributors (e.g. Megalopolis or The Monkey), and we are now going to discuss yet another story from the film festival, related to a movie we have already reported on.

Good luck to you and all who plod along dusty roads with you if the first chapter of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga” compels you to seek out the forthcoming second one. This Civil War-era, Old West expansion epic is a $100 million vanity project that finds the actor/filmmaker in familiar terrain, and with the gall to cast himself as an apparently swoon-inducing cowboy in a world where all the women are either ball busters, prostitutes, or profoundly stupid, and the men hayseeds or Great American Heroes.
Told across four interwoven tales in and around the territories that became Wyoming, Montana, and Kansas, “Horizon” gets its title from a fictional pioneer settlement in the 1860s that’s stomped out an Apache tribe now battling to get back their land. But their patted-on inclusion at all feels like a committee-driven, gun-to-the-head corrective rather than an organic necessity of the story.

Kevin Costner defended his depiction of the old West in his latest film, particularly the portrayal of Native American, Black and Asian characters, saying he “is absolutely conscious of what’s at stake” when it comes to representation.
Speaking at the Cannes film festival after Sunday night’s world premiere of Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1, the first of a planned four-part Western epic, Costner said he aimed to show Native and minority characters in the film as “well-rounded people” much in the same way as he did with Dances With Wolves more than three decades ago.
“I can’t fill every box every time I try to make a movie. But I’m absolutely conscious of what’s at stake,” said Costner. “The Chinese [for example] are a very important part [of American frontier history], as were African Americans obviously, who also began to populate the West. So they’re important to me.”

Horizon: An American Saga filmmaker Kevin Costner recently told Deadline that he’s on schedule to shell out $98 million for the first three movies in his Western series, and a fourth film will take him over the $100 million threshold.
On Monday, the day after Horizon premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the two-time Oscar winner expounded on gambling on his own vision with his own property at a Cannes press conference.
“I’ve acquired — I don’t need four homes,” said Costner about how he used his own funds to bankroll the pics. “I’ll risk those homes to make my movies. I want to leave them to my children, but my children will have to live their own lives.”

Kevin Costner got candid about partly self-financing his new movie, “Horizon: An American Saga,” at a Cannes Film Festival press conference on Monday.
Costner put much of his own fortune into making the $100 million-plus film, including mortgaging his ranch. He directs and stars in the film, which he also produced and co-wrote.
When asked about his struggle to finance the film, Costner said, “I don’t know why it was so hard.”
“You saw the movie. I don’t know why it was so hard to get people to believe in the movie that I wanted to make,” he continued. “You know, I don’t think my movie is better than anybody else’s movie, but I don’t think anybody else’s movie is better than mine. I don’t go out into the world with something I don’t think is good.”

Arriving in the middle of the art smorgasbord that’s the Cannes Film Festival, a three-hour Western directed by Kevin Costner sounded like it might be just the ticket for a perfect night of counterprogramming: a grandly scaled slice of neo-classical Hollywood. That, after all, describes the other two Westerns Costner has directed (“Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range”), as well as his quirky sci-fi pseudo-Western “The Postman.” There’s no question that “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” Costner’s fourth outing as a director, gives off some of that traditional flavor.
The movie, set in 1859 in territories that sprawl from Wyoming to Kansas, has stately mesa backdrops that look like they’d fit right into Monument Valley. It’s got a rousing 1950s-syle musical score (by John Debney) that lays on the Old West sentimentality even when dire things are happening. And a good portion of the movie is...

Kevin Costner rode into Cannes with cowboy swagger, making finger pistols on the red carpet to cheers from the crowd ahead of the premiere for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, a partially self-financed western that is one of the biggest swings of his long career.
Inside the Grand Lumiere Theatre, Costner was greeted with extended applause (including from some guests wearing cowboy hats) before the first public screening of the $90 million-plus budgeted film that is planned as part one of a four-part saga.
Three hours later, as the credits rolled, the crowd delivered a standing ovation that began to taper off at around the four-and-a-half-minute mark, but then continued on for a total of around ten minutes, ending when a tearful Costner took the microphone to speak about his film, which he directed, produced, co-wrote and stars in.

One of the most popular fictional characters of all time, Robin Hood, has been at the center of numerous adaptations. From the early days when Errol Flynn played the legendary outlaw to modern adaptations starring big names such as Sean Connery or Kevin Costner (there is even an animated adaptation by Disney), Robin Hood has been an inspiration for filmmakers and it seems that a new movie that will tackle the story is going to be released relatively soon. The Death of Robin Hood will start production next year and will tell the story of an older, guilt-ridden Robin Hood, and as we know now, Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer have signed on to star in the movie.

Kevin Costner is ready to return to the director’s chair with the epic Western Horizon. Split into two parts, the saga is reportedly set before and after the events of the American Civil War. After over twenty years, the film sees the Oscar-award-winning filmmaker returning as a director. His last film as a director was Open Range.
Costner’s epic saga has been years in the making and has been the subject of controversy due to the actor’s departure from Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone to work on the film. However, one element of the two-part movie might work against the film’s success. According to a new report, the film’s first chapter has a runtime of three hours.

Kevin Costner and Francis Ford Coppola have both put their money where their mouth is, to make huge films outside the studio system…
At the time of writing, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is 85 years old. He owns a thriving vineyard business, and holds enough rights to his films to enjoy the kind of income most of us would happily content ourselves with, without him having to anything else. Contemporaries such as Brian De Palma and Peter Weir, as they’ve headed towards their eighth and ninth decades, have retired from filmmaking. Coppola, meanwhile, has gathered up all his chips and pushed them with some fervour towards the middle of the metaphorical table.
His long-cherished passion project is the gamble in question, a film by the name of Megalopolis that’s finished, and has cost, conservatively, around $100-120m to realise.

Kevin Costner seems to have another movie as director lined up, outside of Horizon: An American Saga – more here.
Later this year, Kevin Costner’s return to the director’s chair arrives on the big screen, with the release of Horizon: An American Saga. In fact, two separate Horizon: An American Saga movies will be in US cinemas this summer, with Costner co-writing, starring and directing both. He then has plans to make two more films in the series.
By the sounds of things though, he has a smaller project lined up that he’s also looking to direct. The metaphorical cat has been let out of the also-metaphorical bag by Chris Hemsworth (pictured here in Netflix’s Extraction), who’s been chatting about a role that he didn’t get.
In conversation with Entertainment Tonight, he revealed that he’d been chasing a role after falling in love with a script.

Chris Hemsworth recently revealed to Entertainment Tonight that he tried hard to land a role in a Kevin Costner-directed project only to learn that Costner had cast himself as the character instead. The “Thor” star did not reveal what the movie was, although he described it as something “abstract and interesting …a small story about a man and a woman.”
“There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role],’” Hemsworth said. “I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”
Hemsworth added that “there are horses involved” in the project as the character is a “horse wrangler,” which is part of...

The iconic actor, director, and Hollywood heartthrob Kevin Costner has long been known for his audacious decisions in both on- and off-screen roles (such as his Yellowstone exit). But his latest move might leave fans and critics alike with a sense of confusion—and maybe a little bit of envy.
The former star of Yellowstone revealed recently that he did cast his son in Horizon: An American Saga without even holding a traditional audition. The two-part story of the forthcoming flick has been Costner’s passion project. Entertainment Tonight was informed by the two-time Oscar winner about his commitment to the work on this Western epic.
