Countless shark attack horror movies have flooded the market since Steven Spielberg changed the game with Jaws back in the 1970s, but the reality is that most of them aren’t very good. For every quality shark attack movie like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, there are about 100 imitators that have only really served to devalue the entire subgenre in their wake.
But every so often, we get a good one. And Netflix may have one of those on their hands with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie from French filmmaker Xavier Gens.
Fresh off the just-released action movie Mayhem!, Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Cold Skin) is back this June with Under Paris, and Netflix has unleashed the official trailer this week.
Following in the grand tradition of Jaws, a celebration turns into a PR nightmare when a hungry shark comes to Paris. One shark. A whole lot of tasty humans.

For an action movie called “Mayhem!” and produced by the French outfit known as WTFilms, “Cold Skin” director Xavier Gens’ latest genre exercise starts off as a rather subdued affair that doesn’t seem all that eager to earn its title. An enjoyably hackneyed and machete-happy tale about an ex-con’s tragic first stab at a second chance, Gens’ Thailand-set foray into Gareth Evans territory is more than 40 minutes old before it borders on anything worthy of an exclamation point, and even by the time it’s over this slow-bruising riff on “The Raid” barely rises to the level of a low-key hullabaloo despite its promise of absolute pandemonium.
That isn’t necessarily a knockout blow against it. Inspired by his collaboration with Evans on “Gangs of London,” but aware that he lacks his colleague’s bone-crunching touch, Gens does his best to make the movie’s simple revenge porn...

While we generally like to think that human beings have catalogued most of the animal kingdom, the fact is that there are still plenty of biological mysteries to uncover. After all, gorillas were only recognized by science in the 1850s, and don’t even get me started on the extinction-dodging coelacanth. That’s why cryptozoology is such a fascinating subject, with amateur zoologists insisting that there’s still a little bit of magic left in the world.
Of course, not every legendary cryptid creature is as cuddly as the jackelope, and that’s why we’ve come up with this list recommending six underrated movies inspired by cryptozoology! After all, what good are monsters if we can’t enjoy scary movies about them?

Denis O’Dell, a producer on two Beatles movies as well as “How I Won the War,” “Robin and Marian” and “Heaven’s Gate,” died Dec. 30 from natural causes in Almería, Spain at his home in San José, Cabo de Gata. He was 98.
Father of “Exodus: Gods and Kings” producer Denise O’Dell and grandfather of Denis Pedregosa, producer of Netflix hit “The Paramedic,” O’Dell’s connection with movies stretches back to the ‘40s.
He had already produced six movies, such as Brian Desmond Hurst’s “The Playboy of the Western World” in 1962, before his association with the Beatles, which began in professional terms with O’Dell taking an associate producer credit on Richard Lester’s “A Hard Day’s Night,” starring the Beatles and released in 1964.

The horror thriller Cold Skin is releasing this week. From French director Xavier Gens (Frontier(s)), this title is set in the early 1900s. On a remote island, two men discover a strange species in the nearby water. They attack them, at their final refuge, an isolated lighthouse. Cold Skin centrally stars Ray Stevenson ("Black Sails"), David Oakes ("The Living and the Dead") and Aura Garrido. As well, a new clip is available for Cold Skin, entitled "Midnight Attack;" this clip can be found here, along with other release details. The "Midnight Attack" clip shows Gruner (Stevenson) and a weather observer (Oakes). They notice something on the shoreline, a horde of sea creatures. One man fights back, while the other runs away. Who will survive and who will perish in the swirling seas? Horror fans can find out this September 7th. On this date, Cold Skin will show in several theatres and on Digital platforms.

Xavier Gens’ period chiller “Cold Skin,” based on the 2002 novel by Catalan author Albert Sánchez Piñol, offers a good-looking and well-crafted if familiar chunk of creature-siege horror as two men in a remote setting battle off an army of amphibious attackers each night. Even the critters themselves have a déjà-vu quality — they resemble the pale-white, clammy humanoid predators of the “Descent” movies — though the primary setting of an island lighthouse over a century ago lends some distinctive atmosphere. Already released in several countries, Goldwyn’s planned Sept. 7 U.S. release should do all right with genre fans, though it won’t likely generate any clamor for sequels.
In Piñol’s widely translated book, the protagonist is a disillusioned fighter for Irish independence. Here, there’s no explanation why David Oakes’ young Irishman has decided to spend a year in complete isolation as the meteorologist on an island near the Antarctic Circle,...

The only child in me always dreams about and delights in films about people who've run away from the world of man to make a go of it by their lonesomes. They're duking it out with their own personal demons in the wilderness, of whatever sort, mano a mano. There's no greater fantasy of this sort than the Lighthouse Keeper. They wear thick-knit sweaters and write in their diaries and stare sadly into the distance at hella stormy seas - it's my fetish writ ten-fold. The old-timier the better - give me strange instruments and dials, knickers and elaborate mustaches, tweed piled to heaven, please and thank you.
Nobody tossed these fantasies into the abyss better than Hp Lovecraft and Cold Skin, the new Lovecrafitan tale of terror from Frontier(s) and Hitman director Xavier Gens (it's actually based on a 2002 book by Albert Sanchez Pinol), is made of that same slippery stuff.

The year is 1914, the planet is about to crack open under the bloody strain of World War I, and a nameless man played by British actor David Oakes is sailing towards the ends of the earth in order to get away from it all. Xavier Gens’ “Cold Skin” never tells us much about who he was, or what inspired him to run from it — the film eschews even the hazy background information that Albert Sánchez Piñol provided in his 2002 novel of the same name — but it’s clear that this sturdy, unremarkable bloke has no further interest in violence.
In fact, our hero is so eager for serenity that he’s decided to abandon human civilization for an entire year, agreeing to work as a meteorologist on a uninhabited island in a frigid corner of the South Atlantic. Cold Skin
On the edge of the Antartic Circle, in the years after World War I, a steam ship approaches a desolate island far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man, on his way to assume the lonely post of weather observer, to live in solitude for a year at the end of the world. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. The rest is forest, a deserted cabin, rocks, silence, and the surrounding sea.

"We are the invaders... which makes us the enemy." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted another official Us trailer for the film Cold Skin, a creature feature set in the Antarctic, which has been delayed and buried after opening in Spain in 2017. This is the latest film by French filmmaker Xavier Gens (of Frontier(s) and The Divide) and it already opened in Europe last year, but has been waiting for a Us release ever since. Most likely because it just looks so weird. Set on a desolate island in the Antarctic Circle, the film is about a man living for a year there as a weather observer who discovers that at night the island is overrun by mysterious creatures. He falls in love with one of them, which complicates things even further. The cast includes David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido as Aneris, who plays the creature who gets close to the main character.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the marketing dept. of Samuel Goldwyn. Director: Xavier Gens. Writers: Jesús Olmo, Eron Sheean and Albert Sánchez Piñol. Cast: Ray Stevenson, David Oakes and Aura Garrido. French filmmaker Xavier Gens must have played the mobile game Shoggoth Rising when he was conceiving Cold Skin. There are moments in his cinematic treatment which looks all too familiar. While the story is different, the fact both owe a huge debt to H.P. Lovecraft says it all. When both take place at a lonely isolated lighthouse and the conflict lies between Man vs. Nature, just who will first succumb to the fury (madness) is easily evident. The cinematography by Daniel Aranyó is gorgeous to behold. The intro feels like it's straight out of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel. However, instead of finding two people at odds with each other, they are ferrying...

"Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places" - Hp Lovecraft
Although they're all classed as horror, Cold Skin is a bit of a departure from director Xavier Gens' other films. The Divide, Hitman and Frontier(s) all confront the viewer with cold-blooded violence and focus very much of the terrors of the modern age, whereas Cold Skin takes us somewhere else entirely. Set on a remote island almost a century ago, it chronicles the strange relationship between an earnest young weather observer, a brutal lighthouse keeper and the strange, amphibious creature whom the latter keeps at his side. Every night, hordes of this creature's kin assail the lighthouse, and every night the desperate men drive them back. It's a deceptively slight story that echoes a centuries long history of conquest and the enslavement of other races, territory held by violence and men struggling to hold onto their humanity. Xavier...

"Ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time" - Hp Lovecraft
A remote island. A solitary weather observer. A devastating secret. Xavier Gens’ Cold Skin has enraptured horror audiences around the world, pleasing fans of the book on which it’s based and also fans of Hp Lovecraft, whose work was a big influence upon it. David Oakes plays the unnamed man who agrees to be marooned there and who only survives thanks to the help of surly lighthouse keeper Gruner (Ray Stevenson), but whose encounters with the monstrous beings who emerge from the sea at night take him to some unexpected places. Despite the disturbing nature of the story, David reports that he had a wonderful time filming it, and he’s happy to talk about the experience.

You were a fan of the book by Albert Sánchez Piñol and wanted to make it after Frontiere(S). What took so long?
It took so long because we had to find the right combination between budget and the story we wanted to tell. If you adapt a film from a book and you are respectful of the original story you have to find how to make it perfect. And reading the first chapter of Cold Skin I was thinking “how can I do that with the budget of an indie film?”
So, first we wrote the script, which took over two years, and then we started looking at the best locations. We have been everywhere…Canada,...

As far as Oscar-themed movie trends go, sex and sea-monsters is a bit of an odd one. But between the rising success of Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-fave The Shape of Water, and now French director Xavier Gens’s latest Cold Skin, it’s apparently all the rage. And while Gens’ film isn’t quite the swirling cross-species romance the awards season voters are apparently going crazy for, it’s certainly worth tracking down for its own merits. Cheaper true, but with a much darker heart, Cold Skin is (quite literally) a very different beast entirely.
What begins as a fairly humble adventure; an early 20th-century weather man, sent to a seemingly abandoned island as the First World War approaches, soon twists and shapes itself into what is essentially (and rather ironically) a war film. Because out on the island, David Oakes’ nameless wanderer very quickly finds...

If you're a movie fan looking for something a little different than the kind of films Hollywood keeps pumping out, here's a crazy looking unique film that you might enjoy. It's a creature feature thriller called Cold Skin and it tells a Lovecraftian type tale of isolation and madness.
The film comes from director Xavier Gens (The Divide, Frontiere(s), The Crucifixion) and it's an adaptation of the Albert Sanchez Piñol’s Spanish novel. The film has been in and out of development since 2009 and at one point 30 Days of Night director David Slade was attached.
The film is set on the edge of the Antarctic Circle a few years after World War I and this is the synopsis:
On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a steamship approaches a desolate island. On board is a young man, poised to take the post of weather observer, to live in solitude...

"Demons from Atlantis..." Finally! A full-length trailer has arrived for a mysterious, chilly horror film titled Cold Skin, the latest creation from French filmmaker Xavier Gens (of Frontier(s) and The Divide). We posted a teaser trailer for this last summer, but haven't heard much from it ever since then, despite playing at a few film festivals. Set on a desolate island in the Antarctic Circle, the film tells of a man living there who discovers that at night the island is overrun by creatures. This trailer finally gives us a good look at them and they're quite chilling. The cast includes David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido as Aneris, who seems to be one of these creatures that one of the men falls in love with. I'm so glad they don't have to hide the blood in this trailer, makes a difference. I'm very curious about this film,...

Now what do we have here? There's a very brief teaser trailer going around for a film called Cold Skin, the latest feature from French filmmaker Xavier Gens (of Frontier(s) and The Divide). The teaser trailer doesn't show much, but there are a bunch of photos from the set and a few posters that give us a good look at the weird "humanoid killer amphibians". Set on a desolate island in the Antarctic Circle, the film tells of a man living there who discovers that at night the island is overrun by these creatures. The cast includes David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido as Aneris, who seems to be one of these creatures that he falls in love with (see photo above). French extremist Xavier Gens (The Divide) has been super busy lately. Not only did he take the reigns on Cold Skin, an adaptation of Albert Sanchez Pinol's popular novel of the same name, he recently wrapped the yet-to-be released possession thriller, The Crucifixion, And produced Mathieu Turi's post-apocalyptic debut Hostile. For now though, let's marvel at this first teaser, and some stunning stills, for Cold Skin, a Lovecraftian take of madness set to premier in the fall. Pinol's book tells of a man who takes a strange job logging wind conditions on a tiny Antarctic island. Upon arrival, he discovers that he has a reclusive neighbour and that at night the island is "overrun by humanoid killer amphibians." Cold Skin was written by Jesús Olmo...

Exclusive: After The Crucifixion, Cold Skin to delve into world of stag parties.
French genre director Xavier Gens, best known for horror pics like Hostile or thriller Hitman, has boarded his first comedy Budapest, based on the true story of two college friends who set up a stag party agency to escape the corporate rat race.
Manu Payet and Jonathan Cohen play the two entrepreneurs who start organising special stag party breaks to Budapest and other eastern European cities, promising to fulfil their clients’ wildest dreams.
The money starts rolling in but their lives start to unravel as the requests get more and more outlandish to the point that one party puts in a deadly request.
“My decision to try my hand was driven by the script. I could myself shooting it and it made a break after shooting two genre films back-to-back,” said Gens, referring to The Crucifixion and Cold Skin. “I also wanted...
