A Great Episode For Personality
KatherinePetersdorf8 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved the scene between Dan and Blair in this episode. Despite the hateful relationship between the two, they really bond over horrid mother's. I felt that after seeing how beyond evil Blair's mother was, even worse that the pilot, I cared even more about her. I wanted to save Blair, cuddle her, and have changed her childhood to one with hugs, inspiration, and a mother who complemented her, not broke her down.

This episode made me a little frustrated at Serena, the way she keeps interacting with Dan and choosing Blair. I thought that he could do better than Serena at this point.

Put your hand on your hip and pop
marthawilcox183118 August 2014
Apart from the fact that Blair regards Dan as Serena's charity case, this is the episode that Serena really demonstrates that she has style. For a start, after she has a conversation with Dan on the street, the music cues by saying: 'You gotta shake your ass.' Then we cut to Serena walking away and guess what? We see her shaking her ass in rhythm with the music. That is a great piece of photography and post-production.

Secondly, we see Serena teach Blair and her cronies how to pose. You just put your hand on her hip and POP. The way she says it makes you want to pop as well. She is so full of life and fun then anyone would want to be her friend.

Bad News Blair (#1.4)

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode they show the problems of the rich kids with their parents. Specifically Blair and Nate. Their parents are not really supportive of what they want. Blair being all upset and having Dan talk with her was a good moment. And one interesting thing about this episode was how they showed Chuck having a good quality for the first time. He helped Nate and showed that he is a good friend. Maybe one will start liking him later.

The One Where Blair Is Jealous...
taylorkingston7 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy this episode. I like the tension between Blair and Serena in this episode. It's very entertaining.

In this episode, Blair is thrilled that her Mother wants her to be a model for her clothing line. But when Serena comes to the shoot and shows her some tips, Eleanor, Blair's Mother, and someone she works with, decide that Serena is the more natural choice for the job. This makes Blair very jealous, especially when Serena didn't ask to be the model. The tension becomes very high when Serena shows up to do the shoot, believing that she and Blair were doing it together. Meanwhile, Nate and Chuck indulge in a guys' weekend.

Best part of the episode: The photo shoot.

Worst part of the episode: The Dan and Serena scenes.

Overall, I give episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.

It might be missing Jenny, but it isn't missing charm!
silver_randomocity13 April 2009
This was an amazing episode.

It humanizes Blair, Dan, and Serena in a fashion shoot/modeling plot line in which Serena tries to help Blair please her mother more, and Dan tries to figure out if Serena is worth it (this is questioned because of her frenemy friendship with Blair). This helped humanize the perfect Queen B and brooding Brooklyn boy, while showing more necessary flaws in the It-Girl.

Chuck throws and party and someone crashes and makes Nate reconsider the UES world. It makes Chuck more sympathetic and Nate more flawed.

Even with the show missing Jenny it doesn't miss the charm with high end fashion, an amazing party, plus drama, drama, drama!

Second favorite episode of the season.
m-478269 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is where friendships grow stronger, after the pilot episode's bickering. Just like any good teen dramas, episodes 2 and 3 always are a downtime, for the story to refocus and recharge, before getting to the juicy stuff. In this case, Blair's drama with her fashion designer of a mother (played by a different actress from the pilot episode...). Gossip Girl was clearly The O. C.'s producers new « baby ». Same drama, characterizations and dynamics. And The Debut, which happens to be 104 as well, is also one of my favorite episodes of the series. Bad News Blair was perfect to compare each « heroines » strengths. Serena was the incarnation of natural beauty, while Blair's was more traditional. Which made her presence on camera, less "transcending" than Serena's. And the episode translated that perfectly. Even though I love the part where Chuck comes to Nate's rescue, the boys drama wasn't as compelling. And my favorite moments are those between the two newly best friends, during which you can feel awkwardness and tension. Even when they fought, you could sense them working at being more honest to each other. And Dan and Blair's heart to heart discussion, was clearly foreshadowing their future fling and the girls next big feud. No Chuck melodrama yet... The closing scene is one of the series most iconic scenes, and I can't listen to « beautiful girls » without thinking of Blair and Serena posing in the stolen dresses. I doubt I'm the only one either...

Blake oh so Lively! oh so lovely!
RavenGlamDVDCollector29 June 2020
Couple days ago I did a review for the pilot that got rejected. I was all about this being another show that featured university-aged actresses pretending to be schoolkids.

Another reviewer here pointed out how Blake Lively in that scene "put your hands on your hip and POP" inspired her... AND SAME HERE. Really, I'm in... I'm in... I'm in!

Johnny-come-lately on DVD thirteen years later, but smirk at me long-time-fans, I still have the experience AHEAD of me, so thank you very much :)
