Stop putting books on a pedestal. Especially Young adult books.
This is is the most upvoted comment this video got on Youtube:
"I remember mocking my little sister for reading Twilight, she then turned to me and said "at least I read books" and I still feel the burn many years later."
I guess Twilight fans (and other young adult book series) would feel so validated by this comment, because they are the same kind of people that believes that books are an inherently superior form of art, disregard of what a person read. They are also the same type of people that keep comparing real-life events to stuff from Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, but honestly, the idea that reading any type of book is going to make you smarter than, say, the people who read comics, play videogames or watch movies is just...Dumb, honestly.
Because this idea ignores how much crap is actually published by editorials. Honestly, anybody can write and publish a book (If you have enough money or if you have the right connections) The idea that only intellectuals are able to publish novels is totally disconnected from reality, and it is entirely based on stereotypes.
Mein Kampf is a book. The Turner Diaries is a book. Morons like Paul Joseph Watson have written plenty of books. Reading trash like that is not going to make you better than anyone (If anything, they probably will end becoming you a far worse, less intelligent person)
And of course, reading Twilight is not going to make you automatically better in any way than, say, the fans of stuff like Call of Duty.
Of course, that is not the point of the video Lindsay made, about the double standards for the crappy stuff made for girls in comparison with the crappy stuff made for boys: Oh, I know very well that a lot of crappy media aimed at men is treated like the Holy Grail by plenty of people. Stuff like Rambo, or Death Wish are often given a lot of undeserved, blind praise. Such attitudes are often encouraged by plenty of internet celebrities, even to this day, and frankly the stuff they hail as great work of art is often just as bad as Twilight, just in a different way (A way which appeals to guys obsessed with the 80s)
Still, plenty of Young Adult Book fans who honestly should get off their high horses, and stop believing that reading any book makes them intelectually superior.
Books, just like in any other media or art form, feature a lot of garbage, and if a person is not selective about their reading material, one could end with lots of garbage in your mind.
