We've got nothing...
Chalice_Of_Evil30 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It's a real shame that Adele Stackhouse got killed off (but then, it was a rather important plot point of the book, so they couldn't very-well go changing it and keep her alive). Still...she was an easily-likable character who we never saw be anything but kind. Lois Smith was great in the role and she's sorely missed after this episode. Poor Sookie, though - finding her Gran like that (and after she'd only recently found the body of Dawn Green too). Sookie goes through so much bad stuff this season, and this is certainly one of the worst moments for her.

What I liked about the episode...

*Bill being the first one who was at Sookie's side and consoling her upon seeing her Gran's body. When no one else was there for her, Bill *was* (which shows that he's one of the few who really cares about her). Sam wasn't far behind, though, so he gets points for that.

*Sam being there for Sookie outside the house. Although he always seems to take things slightly too far, his heart's still in the right place. He definitely cares about her. Meanwhile, back inside the house, I liked Bill with the Sheriff and Andy. Their automatic suspicion of Bill being the murderer was annoying, but he handled them both/their questions well.

*Sookie refusing to move out of the house. Yes, it might have been stubborn of her and perhaps not the wisest thing ever, but I admired her for not giving in and being scared away. The scene with her mopping up her Gran's blood was pretty nasty.

*Bill frustrated at not being able to get to Sookie (when he sensed that she was in trouble) because of it still being daytime. How hard that must've been for him - to be stuck in his hole, unable to go to her. Nice camera work/effects with going up through the hole he sleeps in under his house, through the floor and the house itself. I also liked him speeding up to her room as soon as night fell. The best moment, though, had to be with him standing outside as guard for Sookie (then being joined by the collie). The two of them watching over Sookie's room was great.

*While the scene with Sookie alone, in the kitchen, with her eating Gran's Pecan pie (as she finally broke down) could've come off as incredibly lame/unintentionally funny in the hands of a lot of lesser actresses, Anna Paquin acted the hell out of it, I thought. That was a stellar performance and a real gut-wrenching display of grief. The use of song ('Take Me Home') helped make the scene one of THE most memorable scenes of the season.

*Sookie waiting for sundown and running to Bill. The use of music here was also good, as was the song playing during their love scene. The song playing over the end credits (the title of which also happens to be the title of this episode) was a really nice choice.

Things I didn't like...

*Jason. Him storming in, hitting Sookie, saying it should have been her who was dead, and blaming her for their Gran's death made me hate him. Funnily enough, the character who was voicing my thoughts towards Jason in that moment was Tara (of all people). I say this because, as of the very first episode, Tara had been the character I liked the least. But the way she stood up for Sookie in this episode made me start rethinking that there's absolutely nothing likable about her character. Her standing up to Jason, telling him off/telling him what he deserved to hear and kicking him out almost made me nod in agreement and go, "You tell him!". So now, after six episodes, I'm thinking somewhat differently about the character of Tara (whereas, before, I couldn't stand her). Tara and Lafayette were at their best when sharing the scene with Sookie. They were there for her and handling things when she couldn't.

*The people(in general) of Bon Temps, who attended Adele's funeral/wake. As if Sookie hadn't gone through enough, having to hear all those horrible thoughts from those awful people - who could blame her for losing it at the funeral and telling them to shut the f--- up? They totally deserved that. It went a long way to showing what state of mind Sookie was in (considering she'd never sworn like that before). I'm surprised she held it together as well/for as long as she did. Although I've already mentioned Jason, he really did deserve what Sookie said to him when he tried to apologise for hitting her. I mean, he invited her Uncle (who, it's rather obvious, makes Sookie very uncomfortable) to the funeral, not to mention him starting to become addicted to V - he really did sink to a new level of low in this episode (but, surprisingly, there's even lower he can go).

*What was *supposed* to be Adele's funeral turning into a scene that was all about Tara and her mum/their issues. It really should have been more about Adele and everyone trying to console Sookie, but instead turned into being about something I just really didn't care that much about.

*Sam going from being there for Sookie, to bedding Tara. It just felt like a really inappropriate time for that, and everyone (except Sookie) seemed to be getting over Adele's murder much too quick.

Having said that^, this was still a really good, very emotional episode.

True Blood: Cold Ground
Scarecrow-8829 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Numb from the savage murder of her grandmother, and distraught from the scathing thoughts of the townsfolk who consider her the reason behind Adele's death(thanks to being associated with Bill), Sookie must deal with the pains of sorrow and grief. Tara's mom confesses to her of having a demon inside which causes her to react with hostility and rage, ambiguously asking her daughter to help fund an exorcism. Sam, seeing that his chances with Sookie are nil, has a sexual encounter with Tara. Jason's physiology is out of whack thanks to the V "juice" which is warping his view of the outside world as he himself must contend with the loss of his grandmother. Sookie decides to let Bill take her virginity, and even more, her blood. Highly emotional episode, Cold Ground, allows Anna Paquin a chance to showcase her acting chops as her Sookie suffers all sorts of conflicting emotions, and we see that the gift of reading thoughts of others is anything but..during her eulogy for Adele, those in attendance at the funeral were all blaming her for Adele's death, and we see through Paquin's performance the effects such judgmental thoughts and feelings cause. We see that Sam's chances of landing Sookie diminish as she clearly has eyes only on Bill who "is the only one that makes her feel normal when he's around." Sheriff Bud Dearbone's racism(and most of the town's)is quite evident in this episode, although detective Andy Bellefleur(Chris Bauer)is warming to Bill. Again, I really enjoy the pairing of Bauer and Sanderson, as cop and sheriff respectively, often the butt of the series' humor. I sure hope these two don't go anywhere anytime soon. We also see in this episode, that sex is losing it's allure in Jason's life as he is in tears while a gal he met at a bar rides him like there's no tomorrow.

Loneliness and comfort
Tweekums14 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Having discovered her grandmother dead Sookie is comforted by both Bill the vampire and her boss Sam who are both surprising quick to get there. Initially she seems to be coping well but as neighbours turn up to offer their condolences being able to read their thoughts gets the better of her and she retreats to her bedroom. Things get even worse for her as she stands to make the eulogy at her grandmother's funeral when she hears everybody thinking that it was her fault and it should have been her. She screams at them to shut up before walking off. Her brother is also having problems as he is getting addicted to vampire blood. Feeling totally alone with everybody thinking she is to blame she takes comfort from the one person who's mind she can't read; Bill. When she goes to see him and gets naked she doesn't just give herself to him in the sexual sense but also invites him to drink her blood.

It was sad to see Sookie's grandmother die as she was one of the more interesting characters however I can see how it was needed to advance the plot and ultimately bring Sookie and Bill together, I'm interested to see how these events change the lives of the protagonists.

You're all I got.

This was one powerful episode as events take place around Gran's (Lois Smith) murder and funeral.

Tara (Rutina Wesley) is becoming a more powerful character and Wesley is showing herself to be one accomplished actress.

Jason (Ryan Kwanten) seems to be coming apart at the seems and I am not sure where he is going to end up.

Of course, the culmination of this episode is the sealing of the deal between Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Bill. Things have to go in a whole new direction now.

There are so many loose threads that this series just has to keep on getting better.

Don't make us wait a whole year.....
mbaugh-213 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Last night's episode was amazing! I love the way Sookie's character has been written and developed very sultry innocence. Anna Pacquin does a wonderful job with it as does Stephen Moyers with Bill's character. Thanks for the FYI about Sam. I've always had a strange feeling about him, something is definitely up with him. The scene last night between Sookie and Bill was hot, hot hot!! More with the two of them- PLEASE!!! I have read that both actors are dating and the chemistry between them is definitely apparent on screen! I don't watch much television, but Sundays night HBO is must see TV at my place! Won't miss it for anything!! The characters are all developing really well, my only worry is that HBO will do what it always does, hook us, reel us in with twelve episodes, then leave us hanging for an entire year, making us wait for another new set of episodes as they have done with their other series!!!

Lisbeth Scott - Take Me Home
skay_baltimore17 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
OK...maybe I'm a sentimental slob...but that scene with Sookie eating Gran's pecan pie, while Lisbeth Scott's "Take Me Home" is playing in the background, is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on television or in movies. It was absolutely breathtaking. There have been so many deaths shown on TV and in the movies, but this was SO well done, it should have won an award just for that one scene alone. Sookie said so much without saying a single word. All the tears she'd held inside finally came out. And you could see with each successive moment -- just how much she'd loved her grandmother, and how much she now missed her. I don't even care about the rest of the episode -- I'm giving Cold Ground a 10 out of 10!

S1.E6 - Bill Bites Sookie [9/10]
panagiotis19931 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for True Blood Season 1 Episode 6 ''Cold Ground''. Episode 5 was good and I gave it a rating of 9.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. I wonder who has killed all these women? Could it be Sam? I don't know, I don't trust him. I feel so bad for Tara's mom, she really needs help. It seems like Jason is now addicted to V. Something is really off about Sam, im really curious, I believe that he is a werewolf. I thought Sam wants to be with Sookie so why he keeps sleeping with Tara? What was that ending? Bill bit Sookie? Damn. Overall a really good episode, my rating is 9/10.

Alone
claudio_carvalho20 September 2009
Sookie hears the selfish and mean thoughts of the locals that blame her for dating Bill during the funeral of her grandmother and she has a breakdown during her speech. Bill and Sam dispute Sookie and offer to protect her against an eventual attack of the serial killer. Late night, Sookie feels alone and runs to the arms of Bill. Meanwhile Jason becomes addicted in vampire blood.

In "Cold Ground", Sookie finds that she is alone without the support of Jason and the dwellers and she ends spending the night with Bill and asking him to bite her. Is she going to converted into a vampire? My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "Terra Fria" ("Cold Ground")
