Equal parts suspenseful and absurd, "The Young and the Headless" is all over the map in terms of character development and behavior. Dr. Hook and Dr. Christine (Andrew McCarthy and Allison Hossack) share a kiss, the potential for romance perfectly feasible. Paul (Kett Turton) gloats over the fallen, injured body of beast anteater Antubis, offering to put the creature out of his misery after kicking a loose, heavy pipe on top of it. Mary beckons the spirit within Peter (Jack Coleman, who, I guess at this point, is somewhere between the spirit and mortal worlds) to help her save Antubis ( a blood transfusion given by the spirit of a bandaged, hospital gowned Peter for the anteater is as bizarre as it gets folks, but trust me, this is rational compared to Frank's plight). Paul motivates pyro psycho, Rolf Pederson (Jim Shield, in full blown wacko mode, his eyes *burning* with evil intent) to perhaps set Peter and Sally (Diane Ladd, who happens to finally get to the room where Peter stays, discovering an artistic sketch he prepared of Mary, with her name to inform others of her presence) ablaze. Stegman (Bruce Davison, a laughingstock in this chapter) is to be initiated in the Kingdom Hospital "fraternity" as a part of the "Keepers", his nose sliced when Dr. Louis Traff (William Wise) meant to chop open an apple in the chief of neurosurgery's mouth! A new character is introduced, Dr. Richard Shwartzton (Gerard Plunkett), a seismologist, highly esteemed, who has arrived to help Kingdom Hospital in regards to their repeated, ever-growing-in-intensity tremors, with a little problem..he suffers "alcoholic hallucinosis", if liquor enters his system, he becomes horribly dependent on getting more, resulting in extreme hallucinations! This is not what Kingdom Hospital needs. To top it all off, Elmer (Jamie Harrold) decides to sever the head from Frank's corpse as a practical joke against his crush, Dr. Lona Massingale (Sherry Miller), who gets angry towards him for slapping her on the butt after giving her a rose. Seeing the headless corpse of Frank in hysterics looking for his missing head is completely and utterly bonkers. A key character whose role wasn't as important until this particular episode is the ghost of Dr. Egas Gottreich (Bill Meilen), looking for Peter, startling Rolf who was about to kill Sally. Moving slowly towards the helpless torso of Peter (his spirit still in the lower halls of the remnants of Gottreich Hospital), Rolf might just be in for a surprise..
Seeing security guard Otto's (Julian Richings) dog, Blondie, chasing after Stegman down the halls of the Gottreich while Mary and Peter's spirits are passing by is quite a moment where two worlds seem to nearly collide. The relationship of Paul and Dr. Gottreich could prove quite interesting when it is elaborated on later. Jodelle Ferland's role as Mary continues to gain more and more exposure within the show—she is everywhere, even popping up as a reflection on a wine bottle much to the horror of an unhinged Shwartzton (his calamity derives from the waiter's getting his ginger ale mixed up with champagne!), about to be rushed to the emergency room of Kingdom Hospital. The tremors, during each continuing chapter, are growing in power and strength, coinciding with events of spirit work between Paul and Antibus. William B Davis (the Cigarette-Smoking Man on the X-Files) guest stars.
