In the comics, Magpie first appeared in The Man of Steel #3 from 1986. Created by John Byrne, Magpie - real name Margaret Pye - was a museum curator who slowly goes mad from being surrounded by beautiful things that she can never own. She ultimately turns into a jewel thief who particularly targets jewels named for birds, replacing them with booby-trapped replicas.
Magpie is sentenced to Blackgate Penitentiary. Within the DC comics universe, it's primarily used for holding any non super-powered villains.
Magpie's suit underwent a major revamp for the character's appearance on the 2013 animated series Beware the Batman (2013). This suit was later adapted in the comics version in DC Rebirth.
Many Chicago sceneries are shown as a nod to film adaptations, like the scene in The Dark Knight (2008) with the two ferries with detonators, which used in same area. The Dark Knight trilogy has used L.A., N.Y.C., and Chicago city streets to portray their Gotham City; Batwoman is no exception.
