Keep the show, kill the hosts

I don't know if I'd hire either of these women to represent me as a real estate agent if I were selling my house. To call them "real estate experts" is stretching things quite a bit.

I agree that the mother is annoying as all hell, with her inflection-free speech; it's like she's reading her comments off a teleprompter for the first time. Get the woman some Carnegie training in public speaking or get rid of her.

The daughter is a little more lifelike in the way she talks, but both of them seem to go out of their way to insult, demean, and berate all homeowners. I am constantly amazed that people have actually requested that they come to their homes; if they ever spoke like that to me I'd throw them out of my house bodily.

As for their comments and suggestions, yes, they are inconsistent. They tell one person to add some plants to a room, then they tell the next person they have too many plants. They suggest beige paint on the walls in one house, then complain that the next house, which already has beige walls, is too bland.

I saw one show where they went into a beautiful house that was obviously decorated by a professional, and when they couldn't find anything to criticize they started making stuff up, like move the couch two feet to the left or push the curtains to the side of the window instead of across them.

If they indeed know about real estate -- and I seriously doubt their expertise in that area either -- then that's the type of advice they should be giving, not design advice.

HGTV: Please cancel this show

HGTV: Please cancel this show.

I find the hosts to be condescending and irritating, more concerned with looking smug on camera than helping the homeowners or the viewing audience with practical advice. They make so many snide asides about the homeowners yet most of the shows I've seen conclude with the house still up for sale even though the homeowner invested thousands of dollars to implement their advice or with the hosts claiming credit for a sale that was made a day after their visit.

How do they make that connection? A) The homeowners have not had time to implement their advice, and B) the show has not even aired on TV.

Also annoying about this show are the "suspenseful" camera cuts and hanging phrases that seem to be more common this year on HGTV. If the host or the real estate expert has an opinion, just say it. We don't need to have the camera cut dramatically from the host or expert to the homeowner.

For example:

Host/expert: The reason your house hasn't sold is....

(Camera cut to homeowners. Homeowners look at each other nervously.)

(Camera cut to host/expert. In the case of Secrets That Sell, the hosts look at each other, as though they alone know the truth and the homeowners are idiots.)

(Camera cut back to homeowners, still looking nervous, clutching their hands, biting their nails.)

(Camera cut back to host/expert, again looking smug.)

... insert some trivial reason.

The other day, they told these two guys that the bold colors they used on their walls and the furniture arrangement indicated they hadn't grown up. Tonight they told a guy that his place was perfectly decorated but was too formal.

There's no consistency to the show. When they have people with too much clutter, they blame the clutter and ask that all of it be removed. When there's no clutter, they call the place formal and uninviting.

Please, HGTV, cancel the show or find more likable hosts.

Secrets that Sell...Tells it like it is!

HGTV...Whatever you do, don't cancel this show ("Secrets That Sell")! It's the perfect alternative/balance to all the other 'sugar coated' real estate advice and 'makeover' shows that already exist. Granted, this mother/daughter team can be brutal. The reality is that they know it, and they're usually 95% right on!! These homeowners know what's coming and it's all part of the show.

I've noticed that the show has quickly progressed into a better format, (although a few additional changes would be great...i.e., the "pause" in conversation as to why the house isn't selling). There appears to be a more detailed follow up with the homeowners as to whether or not they were successful in implementing the suggestions that were given to them.

Let's face it. Some people just don't "get it" when it comes to preparing their homes for sale. This show at the very least makes it entertaining as well as informative.

Yes, this show needs to be canceled

I agree with the first reviewer - this show is horrible and the hosts are annoying. The stupid "dead air" cuts are a waste of time. It doesn't build drama, it just reinforces the idea that the people who make this show are clueless hacks.

The mother / daughter host team is annoying, the mother much more so than the daughter. Actually, if they fired the mother and let the daughter run the show, it might be watchable because she's much less grating than her mother, who talks in a completely unnatural tone for the entire show. I've seen public access cable shows that had better hosts than her.

And what's with the mom holding the glasses throughout the entire show? Really - check out the show from the beginning. They usually show mommy dearest arriving with sunglasses on or just taking them off. Then, for the duration of the show - and this is in every show - she's holding them in one hand and using them to gesture. Maybe she or some producer thought that could be her trademark, but it's just stupid. You're shooting a TV show, nobody is going to be fooled into thinking this is a casual visit because you're holding your glasses. Put them in your pocket, keep them in your car, or give them to a staffer. Maybe she wants to have them handy so she can say something clever and do a David Caruso / CSI Miami dramatic sunglass put on, followed by a quick cut of "Won't Get Fooled Again".

HGTV rode the housing bubble all the way up, and it looks like on the way down they're throwing out cheap programs with bad hosts / production values in order to save a few bucks.
