Amy Herman: Like, maybe, a video camera?
Bill Herman: [making balance-scale motions with his hands] Hmm, mortgage payment, video camera. What should I do?

Definite torture
I seriously have no idea how to grade this film. But I can say this- it's appalling in its totally shameless manipulation. It's a total gimmick, this "hand held camera" thing has been done way too many times. And the dialogue early on is pretty atrocious. The problem here is that many times this whole thing doesn't feel real. I first saw The Blair Witch Project a few years ago knowing it was fake, but it still remains the most frightening film I've ever seen. It feels completely real and there's no sense of artificiality. This film could have been in that same level had it actually felt as real. Instead, many scenes just feel totally fake, the news segments in particular.
However, it's to the definite credit of the filmmaker that it makes its point heard and felt, to an extremely uncomfortable degree. People toss around the words "torture porn" to films who really excess in so-called "torture". But porn is supposed to be an enjoyable thing no? In that case, this isn't torture porn. This is just plain torture. It's amazing that for a film with so much of it feeling contrived it manages to work as much as it does. But beware, it definitely leaves a horrible, horrible aftertaste. It's as you're watching it that you feel hatred towards it, but it wasn't until it was over that I have to give credit where credit is due. But very hard film to rate
