GLAAD today announced the nominees in 30 categories for its 33rd Annual Media Awards.
In a flip-flip of last year’s top leaders, the combined HBO/HBO Max scored the most nominations of any network with 19, followed by Netflix with 17. That’s a lot closer than last year, when Netflix ran away with 26 noms, while HBO was a distant second with nine.
Streaming services saw a total of 63 nominations, with cable receiving 39 and broadcast networks receiving 17. Hulu received seven nominations, while ABC, MSNBC and Peacock all saw four. In the Spanish-language categories, Univision and Telemundo both received two nominations.
The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues.

A few years ago, many were calling for a return to the Roaring '20s. While those plans were derailed thanks to the general state of the world right now, streaming services still decided to turn back the clock. Although, they stopped at the '90s. "Full House," "Saved By The Bell," "Daria," and "Legends of the Hidden Temple" are just a few favorites that have been revived by various streamers.

Isla Fisher and Josh Gad’s characters don’t have your typical meet-cute in Peacock’s Wolf Like Me (premiering Thursday, Jan. 13).
Written and directed by Little Monsters auteur Abe Forsythe, the half-hour dramedy centers on Gary (Gad), an “emotional wreck” who struggles to provide for his daughter Emma following the death of his wife; and Mary (Fisher), who harbors a secret she can’t bring herself to share with anyone. “The universe brought these two together for a reason,” the official/cryptic logline teases. “They just need to keep following the signs.”

The members of the Broadcast Film Journalists Assn. (Bfja) and Broadcast Television Journalists Assn. (Btja), who vote for the annual Critics Choice Awards in their respective media, always deliver at least a few surprises on the year’s ballots when compared to other voting populaces.
The 27th annual Critics Choice Awards are no exception. In television alone, HBO’s drama series “Succession” nabbed the most nominations of all series (eight), which was expected, and the same premium cabler’s limited series “Mare of Easttown” followed closely behind (with five noms). But the usually (and unfortunately) underappreciated “Evil,” which moved from CBS to Paramount Plus this year, also tied for the second-most noms with five. Additionally, the Btja shined a light on some other deserving but thus far overlooked series and individual talent with nominations for comedy series “The Other Two,” which moved from Comedy Central to HBO Max in its second season,...

As a Saturday morning staple, Saved by the Bell helped shape the viewing tastes of an entire generation of kids. Our age of reboots, revivals, and revisitations is beginning to take its toll. With every new announcement comes the ceremonial rolling of the eyes from critics — unless they happen to be a fan of the IP, in which case the news is greeted with frenzied excitement — and grumblings from fans. Not that either has stopped the slow march toward net zero on creativity.
But while many reboots are content to do nothing more than update the technology for a beloved property and cash in on its name recognition, some are interested in exploring and questioning what made the original iteration so resonant while addressing its earlier failings. The prime example is Pop TV’s dearly beloved “One Day at a Time,” which took the original’s premise (single mom and kids struggling with divorce) and applied it to a Latinx family. Suddenly, an entirely new world of stories opened up,...

During the most recent season of MTV’s competition program “The Challenge,” subtitled “Spies, Lies & Allies,” the competitors initially had to work in pairs, despite major language barriers among them.
In these games, veteran players from past seasons of “The Challenge” compete against vets of other series including “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island” from around the world. Everyone must speak at least a little English, casting director Skye Topic says, or it wouldn’t be fair, since host T.J. Lavin gives them the rules of each challenge in English. But because “we envision the show as a place where it’s an intersection of societies,” she says, they are leaning into bringing in global players, including those from Germany, Turkey, Romania, Spain and Nigeria in this season alone.

The 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations for TV were announced on December 6 with HBO’s family drama “Succession” earning eight nominations. Next in line with five bids apiece were HBO’s limited series “Mare of Easttown” and Paramount +’s drama series “Evil.” The critics’ group also created a brand new category this year, Best Foreign Language Series, no doubt in response to the behemoth that is Netflix’s “Squid Game” — the Korean drama contends there and in two other categories. Saved by the Bell‘s Kelly Kapowski gave up on becoming a doctor when she agreed to marry Zack Morris during The College Years — a decision Tiffani Thiessen’s alter ego reevaluates during Season 2 of the Peacock revival.
Midway through Sbtb‘s sophomore run, Kelly confides in Jessie and Lisa that she’s been seeing a man — a tutor, that is, to prepare her for the McAt exam. But just a couple of episodes later, she tells Jessie that she’s having doubts. The universe clearly doesn’t want her to become a doctor — and it was fate, she says,...

For Saved by the Bell‘s Jessie Spano, giving into a “bad idea” might be the thing that finally makes her happy in a way her marriage to the insufferable Rene never did.
Midway through Season 2 of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival, Kelly suggests it’s kismet that a newly divorced Jessie and still-single Slater just so happen to work together at Bayside nearly 30 years after their high school romance fizzled out. Jessie insists that she no longer thinks about Slater’s butt — err, about Slater that way, but as fate would have it, Season 2 culminates in a...

The lines between what Jessie Spano and Nomi Malone did in Las Vegas are blurred during Season 2 of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival, which pays homage to Elizabeth Berkley Lauren‘s iconic role in the cult classic Showgirls.
Released in 1995 with a rare Nc-17 rating, the erotic drama centered on a street-smart drifter (Lauren) who ventured to Sin City to become a showgirl. Though the movie was widely panned at the time and made nary a dent at the box office, it has since found a second life on basic cable, where it has played ad nauseam since the mid ’90s.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the second season of “Saved by the Bell,” streaming now on Peacock.
In conceptualizing her continuation series of “Saved by the Bell,” Tracey Wigfield knew there were certain things fans of the original series would be waiting to see. On the top of that list was the romantic reunion of Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren) and A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez). After realizing they still had feelings for each other, they finally kissed again, 30 years in the making, in the second season finale.
“What are we doing here if Slater and Jessie aren’t going to hook up?” the showrunner says with a laugh. “When I watched the ‘90210’ reboot, I had very little personal connection to that show, but I was like, ‘When are the people who kissed 30 years ago going to kiss again?’ There’s just a part...

Saved by the Bell paid tribute to Dustin Diamond during today's season premiere.
Samuel "Screech" Powers' former friends joined forces at The Max to honor their late friend.
Diamond died in February of lung cancer at 44 years old.
Screech was not a part of the freshman season of the reboot, but the series teased that he moved to the International Space Station with his robot companion Kevin.
The episode picks up with Zack and Slater talking in the Bayside High School's parking lot, and we learn that Morris lost his re-election bid for governor of California to Prince Harry.
“Anyways, it doesn’t matter. Worst things happened this year,” Zack tells his friend before asking:
“Are you going to the thing at The Max?"
“I don’t know. I’ll have to see," Slater responds.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Saved by the Bell, Season 2, Episode 1.] Saved by the Bell is back and paying tribute to one of its vets as the original stars honor former colleague Dustin Diamond, who famously portrayed Screech. The actor, who was born in 1977, died earlier this year at the age of 44 due to a battle with Stage 4 lung cancer. Now, Peacock‘s revival has brought together original cast members Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, and Lark Voorhies for a memorial of sorts. The installment focused on the Bayside High kids returning to school following virtual learning during the pandemic. (Credit: Everett Collection) While the students are busy making up for lost time, the adults are dealing with some serious problems, including combating depression. It’s clear from the start of the installment that coach Slater (Lopez) is working through a tough time as he attempts to push physical activity as...

Even admirers of the movie “Showgirls” can concede that it was not a movie with its star’s best interests in mind.
The 1995 box-office bomb was, in its moment, pilloried for its indulgent taste for sleaze; with some distance, it’s possible to see it as director Paul Verhoeven’s lovingly manic embrace of American trash culture. But re-evaluating the movie hasn’t rescued the prospects of its star, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, who as recently as last year said she was “bullied” for the role and made “a pariah in the industry I had worked so hard for.”
For all the glee that imbues “Showgirls,” there’s a bummer of a story at its center: Berkley Lauren (who at the time of “Showgirls” just went by Berkley) won worst actress at the mean-spirited Razzie Awards and had limited future prospects. Coming off her role on the teen show “Saved by the Bell,...

In news that will shock absolutely nobody, the amount of scripted TV series produced in 2020 fell for the first time in years, thanks to production troubles caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. But now, thanks to FX, we know just how much it dipped.
According to FX Research, the total number of scripted television series last year was 493, a 7% decline from 2019 (532). This combined total includes broadcast, basic cable, premium cable and streaming services. FX did not provide any further information or a breakdown of each platform, as it has done in past years.
Even with the downturn, the amount of series was still higher than every year prior to 2018. In 2020, that figure topped 500 for the first time.
When the pandemic first hit the United States, it caused a months-long shutdown in production, with only animated series being able to largely stay on the air unaffected. Though some series have managed to...

More than 33 million people have signed up for Peacock to date, NBCUniversal parent company Comcast revealed Thursday.
That’s up from the 26 million subscribers that NBCU CEO Jeff Shell said the the new streaming service had reached on Dec. 8. It’s also well ahead of previous targets as Comcast had previously projected Peacock would have up to 35 million subscribers by the end of 2024.
To give an idea of Peacock’s continued growth, in late October, Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts revealed the platform was nearing 22 million sign-ups. Prior to that update, in mid-September, Comcast said the platform had just topped 15 million sign-ups after hitting 10 million sign-ups at the end of July.
The ad-supported service first became available to Comcast and Cox customers on April 15, three months before its full launch on July 15. Unlike HBO Max, Peacock is still not available on Amazon Fire TV devices, a huge player in the streaming world.
