Naomi Watts has had a penchant for highly physical roles unusual among female stars not particularly associated with action movies. It made her acrobatics the most special effect amidst so many CG wonders in Peter Jackson’s “King Kong,” and a vividly plausible victim of grueling crises in films like “Funny Games” and “The Impossible.” Of course, one can always get too much of a good thing, as when recent, regrettable “The Desperate Hour” seemed to reduce the hot-button topic of school shootings to a gimmicky “Watch this fearless actress run the gamut of emotions while Jogging!”
Fortunately, there is nothing gratuitous about the physicality demanded of Watts by “Infinite Storm,” which is based on a real-life incident that took place in New Hampshire’s White Mountains a dozen years ago. Visually splendid, Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska’s second English-language feature (following 2019’s “The Other Lamb”) is an impressive outdoor...

So, did last week’s big release, King Richard, spark your interest in “female-centric” sports flicks? Maybe just a bit, eh? Well, we’ve got one just in time for the holiday weekend. Since 1997, Rahsaan Patterson has specialized in handsome songs, loving and lovelorn, packed with vocal pirouettes, supple pleading, and lush harmonies. The singer draws from R&b’s venerable Quiet Storm tradition, making music that would fit comfortably next to oldies by Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder. But when Patterson entered the music industry in the Nineties, R&b was growing less interested in “Quiet” and more interested in “Storm” — a certain amount of musical thunder was necessary to compete with hip-hop.

Viewpark has teamed with Louisiana-based production company Back Porch Movies to develop and finance “In a Good Place Now,” a feature film based on the life of musician Warren Storm.
Storm, who died on Sept. 7, was a pioneer of the musical genre known as “swamp pop,” a combination of rhythm and blues, country and western, Cajun and black Creole music. His music inspired many other musicians, including Elvis and Hank Williams.
He also inspired Louisiana singer Yvette Landry. Born in Breaux Bridge, not far from the Levees of Atchafalaya, America’s largest swampland, Landry grew up with an appreciation of the rich culture and history of the Cajun people. When she encountered Storm she inspired him to cement his place in music history culminating in the book “Taking the World by Storm,” and the album “A Regional Roots Journey With the Godfather of Swamp Pop.”

Toofaan (Amazon Prime)

Directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra
This week, Amazon Prime has a lot to be proud of . Two outstanding feature films Malik in Malayalam and Toofaan in Hindi, although the language in both cases is the least vital component in its vibrant validity and renewable vitality.
Toofaan, I have to admit, starts off sluggishly . As the triumphant underdog’s saga of a goon from Dongri who becomes a national boxoffice champ, Toofaan takeson all the typical tropes of the sports genre: gruff coach, elitist decision-makers, supportive girlfriend and what–have-you.
But then suddenly Toofan changes tracks to become something much more than a sports drama, something far more relevant moving and vital. It become a testament to the power and pain of love in a growingly intolerant society powered by toxic levels of prejudice and suspicion. Following the intercaste marriage of...

Actress Mrunal Thakur feels that very few filmmakers give equal footing to women characters in their movies.
According to her, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is one of those filmmakers who treats female characters in their films well.
"There are very few filmmakers who envision a story that gives its women characters an equal footing. In the best of Rakeysh's works, one can see how beautifully he layers his women. Be it Soha Ali Khan's Sonia in 'Rang De Basanti' or the female characters in 'Delhi 6' or 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', his women are memorable," said Mrunal.
She will be seen in Mehra's next film "Toofan" alongside Farhan Akhtar.
"In 'Toofan' my character is an anchor to the narrative despite not being the driving force of the plot. It was a beautiful experience working with Farhan and Rakeysh. They subconsciously help you push yourself to explore things you haven't tried.

Mumbai, Nov 10 (Ians) Actress Mrunal Thakur refuses to get pigeonholed. She says no one should be able to define her abilities or have a set idea of her capabilities.
The actress, who made her mark with roles in "Super 30" and "Batla House" last year, has "Jersey" opposite Shahid Kapoor and "Toofan" co-starring Farhan Akhtar coming up in Bollywood. Films like "Aankh Micholi" with Abhimanyu Dassani, "Pippa" co-starring Ishaan Khatter and the "Thadam" remake are also coming up.
"With the changing landscape of content today, what really helps actors is their range. A filmmaker shouldn't be able to associate you with any particular type. Fluidity and versatility are crucial for any artiste working in this day and age. With the set ideas of heroes and heroines and villains gone, we are all competing for an audience's attention equally. And we are catering to an evolved audience that's simultaneously consuming a lot of international content.
