“The Queen’s Gambit,” the story of a chess prodigy that was a streaming smash for Netflix, may become a musical. Level Forward, has acquired the theatrical stage rights to Walter Tevis’ novel “The Queen’s Gambit,” which served as the basis for the miniseries. Tevis also wrote “The Hustler” and “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” both of which became films and, in the case of “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” a stage show.
“The Queen’s Gambit” centers on Beth Harmon, an orphan who discovers she has a preternatural ability to move the pieces around a chess board and dominate the competition. The novel, published in 1983, follows her journey from Kentucky to Paris to Moscow, while she battles addiction and the prejudices of a male-centered world. Now, that journey will involve music, dance and singing, in addition to pawns and rooks.

“The Queen’s Gambit” is being adapted as a musical for the theater stage, as the company Level Forward has acquired the rights to Walter Tevis’ book.
The acclaimed Netflix miniseries about the story of fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon has become wildly popular.
But with no writer of director attached yet, Level Forward’s plans don’t appear to have the involvement of “The Queen’s Gambit” showrunners Scott Frank and Allan Scott or of star Anya Taylor-Joy
“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater,” Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz said in a statement. “Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph.

NBC’s comedy Mr. Mayor toplined by Ted Danson wrapped its freshman run Thursday, drawing a 0.4 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 2.47 million viewers, both numbers hitting lows as it awaits a decision on a return for second season.
CBS’ flagship comedy Young Sheldon jumped up week over week in both metrics to a season high in viewers, per Nielsen’s Live+Same Day fast affiliates. It topped the ratings heap in primetime on a night that also saw the season finale of ABC’s Craig Ferguson-hosted game show The Hustler, which was steady.
CBS, ABC and Fox tied for the top spot overall in the demo. CBS edged ABC in viewers, following Young Sheldon with its comedies B Positive, also touching a season high in viewers, a steady Mom and The Unicorn which was up a tenth. At 10 p.m., Clarice was steady.

Not this week, Univision. CBS, ABC and Fox tied for first place in ratings among adults 18-49 on Thursday, when ABC aired its “Hustler” Season 1 finale. CBS finished first in total viewers during primetime, with “Young Sheldon” and “B Positive” both enjoying their largest overall audiences of the season. Considering this is the first season of the Thomas Middleditch-starring “B Positive,” we can also call that one a series high in viewers. CBS, ABC and Fox tied for first in ratings, each with a 0.6 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. CBS was first in total viewers with an average of 4.8 million, according to preliminary numbers. ABC was second in total viewers with 4.2 million and Fox was fourth with 2.4 million. For CBS, “Young Sheldon” at 8 p.m. posted a 0.9/6 and 7.6 million viewers. At 8:30, “B Positive” drew a 0.7/4 and 5.1 million viewers. “Mom” at 9 had a 0.6/4 and 5.1 million viewers. At...

Silence of the Lambs sequel of sorts Clarice was pretty vocal last night.
The 10 Pm debut of the CBS thriller series based on Thomas Harris’ novels scored a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and an audience of 4 million, according to Nielsen. Holding on to 100% of the rating and the viewership of its Unicorn lead-in, the Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet EP’d Clarice also check another pretty important box at the network on Thursdays. The Rebecca Breeds starring show was equal ratingswise with what the premiere of Evil snagged in the same time slot last year and even a touch ahead in terms of sets of eyeballs.
Elsewhere on the ViacomCBS-owned broadcaster, the big winner of the night was once again Young Sheldon (0.8/7.3 million). The Big Bang Theory prequel was not only steady with its last original but also the most watched and highest rated show of Thursday’s primetime.

It was a ho-hum night for the broadcast networks.
The highly anticipated launch of Clarice drew 4 million total viewers and a 0.5 rating.
The numbers are not great but the show is not your typical CBS procedural and could break out in a similar way to Evil.
Additionally, the brand name alone should help CBS secure a lot of money from international sales, so we shouldn't rule the show out yet.
Elswhere on CBS, Young Sheldon (7.3 million/0.8 rating), B Positive (5.1 million/0.6 rating), Mom (5.3 million/0.7 rating), and The Unicorn (3.9 million/0.5 rating) were all up from their most recent originals.
Over on The CW, Walker inched down some more in the demo, coming down to 1.7 million total viewers and a 0.2 rating.
The show remains a hit (by CW's lowly standards), but it would nice if it stabilized in the young adult demo.

Four of the featured fellows in “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — Sacha Baron Cohen, Frank Langella, Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance — made the BAFTAs longlist of 15 contenders for Best Supporting Actor. We are predicting that Cohen, who also reaped Golden Globes and SAG bids, will earn a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Rylance, who won this award in 2015 for “Bridge of Spies,” is jockeying for the fifth slot.

ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune kept up its pace Thursday, scoring a night-leading 0.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.39 million viewers. The network’s lineup that included fellow game shows The Chase and The Hustler helped ABC top primetime in total viewers.
Wheel and Hustler were even with last week’s Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliates, while The Chase dropped a tenth.
ABC tied for the nightly demo win with Fox, which saw Hell’s Kitchen and Last Man Standing steady with last week and bookending Call Me Kat, which got a tenth bump to match the demo it got in its time-period premiere January 8.

The CW’s “Walker” is still strolling along in Week 2, when the “Walker, Texas Ranger” reboot drew 2.1 million total viewers. That’s very good for the network. At the top of the Nielsen rankings for Thursday, ABC and Fox tied for first place in the key adults 18-49 demographic. Blame a slight week-to-week decline in “The Chase” for that. ABC still had primetime’s most overall viewers. Also Read: 'Walker': Genevieve Padalecki on Emily's Mysterious Death and That Poker Chip ABC and Fox tied for first in ratings, both with a 0.6 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. The CW has a hit on its hands with Walker.
Walker Season 1 Episode 2 had 2.1 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
The series held 81% in the demo and 86% of total viewers from last week's debut, a decent hold week-to-week.
Reboots, in general, typically have bigger drop-offs post-premiere due to the curiosity factor wearing off.
After that, Legacies Season 3 Episode 2 perked up to 733,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating in the demo, up a bit from last week's premiere.
Over on ABC, its game show line-up continued to sink, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (6.4 million/0.8 rating) and The Chase (4.7 million/0.6 rating) losing more ground.

Though it wasn’t the “winner” of Thursday’s Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliate rankings, The CW’s latest series, a Jared Padalecki-fronted reboot of “Walker, Texas Ranger” entitled “Walker” performed outstandingly well compared to the network’s numbers these past couple of weeks. It attracted roughly 2.4 million viewers to the small screen and earned a rating of 0.4 in the key, adults ages 18-49 demographic.
Instead, CBS’ sitcom spinoff “Young Sheldon,” which, like its predecessor “The Big Bang Theory,” is created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, took the cake on Thursday night for the network: the winter return of the series garnered a 0.8 rating in the key demo and 7.5 million viewers.
Elsewhere on television at 8 p.m., ABC’s “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” which is like the classic Pat Sajak and Vanna White-led game show but with— you guessed it— celebrities drew a 0.8 rating in the key demo and 6.1 million viewers.

The CW’s series premiere of Walker drew a 0.4 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 2.43 million viewers Thursday, sparking the network’s most watched Thursday primetime since 2018.
The series, which starts Supernatural alum Jared Padalecki in a revival of the Chuck Norris-starring CBS action drama that ran from 1993-2001, debuted with the most watched telecast in the 8 p.m. Thursday time slot for CW since December 2016 (a DC’s Legends of Tomorrow episode). Last night, Walker led into the Season 3 bow of Legacies, which grew in viewers from last year’s finale per Nielsen’s Live+Same Day fast affiliates.
ABC won the night in both the demo and viewers with its game show lineup of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, which saw a three-tenths dip from last week, followed by The Chase and The Hustler, both off a tenth.

It was a big night for The CW.
The network's return to original programming continued with Walker's series premiere and the return of Legacies.
Walker Season 1 Episode 1 packed a punch in total viewers, drawing 2.4 million total viewers.
This number is the network's largest audience since January 2018, and the largest in the slot since December 2016.
In the demo, the Jared Padalecki-fronted reboot of the Chuck Norris classic had a 0.4 rating.
Last season, the top show on The CW was The Flash at 1.3 million viewers and a 0.4 rating, so this is a winning start for Walker.
The large tune-in could be attributed to the fact this is a reboot of a beloved series, and of course, Padalecki, who recently wrapped a 15-year run on Supernatural.
After that, Legacies Season 3 Episode 1 had 0.7 million viewers and a 0.2 rating -- right on par with last season's average.
These numbers are somewhat disappointing when you...

In the latest TV show ratings, Walker debuted to 2.43 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating, giving the CW time slot its largest audience in more than four years (since a December 2016 episode of Legends of Tomorrow) and leading the network to its most watched Thursday in nearly three years (since March 29, 2018).
In fact, Walker’s premiere was The CW’s most watched telecast of any kind since the Jan. 30, 2018 episode of The Flash, and the network’s most watched season premiere since The Flash Season 4 (in October 2017).

Sophia Loren is generating red-hot Oscar buzz for her performance in Netflix’s Italian-language drama “The Life Ahead.” The screen legend has earned some of the best reviews of her seven-decade career for her heartbreaking performance as a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor who takes care of children of streetwalkers.
Loren made Oscar history 59 years ago when she became the first performer to receive an Academy Award for a foreign-language film. She took home Best Actress for Vittorio DeSica’s harrowing World War II drama “Two Women,” which was also in Italian. Loren, who also starred with Charlton Heston that year in the lavish epic “El Cid,” had very strong competition when the Oscar nominations were announced in the winter of 1962.

ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune maintained its momentum in Thursday’s primetime, matching last week’s premiere numbers with a night-leading 1.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers.
Wheel‘s strong showing bolstered ABC’s game shows The Chase and The Hustler, both of which dipped just a tenth from last week’s debut numbers. The trio helped the network sweep the night in the demo and viewership in Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliates.
Elsewhere last night, Fox’s second week of the new season of Hell’s Kitchen was steady with its debut. The network’s new Mayim Bialik comedy Call Me Kat dipped a tenth from last week when it made its time-period debut. Last Man Standing followed and was even.

We won’t go so far as to say that Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” was voted out of office on Thursday, but the new NBC sitcom did shed a significant number of viewers, about 1.3 million, from last week’s debut. It’s worth pointing out here that two “Mayor” episodes aired last week, with Episode 2 declining from the series premiere. So the losses are less dramatic from Episodes 2 to 3. That said, a rerun of “Mr. Mayor” got a really nice boost as a lead-in to playoff football on Sunday. That could only have helped. ABC topped another Thursday primetime thanks to better performances in Week 2 of its new game shows “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” and “The Chase.” CBS effectively aired all reruns last night.
