The real-life killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer led to the show making numerous changes before its 8th and final season. Four scripts that had been fully written and approved were shelved so that new scripts that reflected this event and how police officers/actions were perceived in its aftermath (and would change in response to it) could be produced. John C. McGinley's character of the NYPD union chief was moved from comic relief to a genuine antagonist, based on the character's view that no NYPD officer should ever face consequences for any wrongdoing. The season focused on Andy Samberg's Det. Jake Peralta taking a hard look at his inspirations and views for being a cop in the first place. And a main character resigned entirely and took a new job helping civilians who had been mistreated by the NYPD.
Due to the Black Lives Matter movement, the script for this episode and the rest of the series was radically changed to give a new perspective on American police departments.
