A definite improvment, but still suffers from forced writing
nucleus-2471815 January 2022
Well, I finally made some time to get to the second episode and ill review it in a shorter way. I don't this will be very helpful so I'll summarize my opinion/critique of it.

It is a better episode than the first in having a plot. But its plot is only good by the second half. The writing is forced and characters aren't woven into the story well.

Now for some superficial stuff

Editing is just as bad as the first and what I said the first time still applies, "The editing does not follow the motion of the previous shot, making it very dull and sudden." It all feels out of place and removes the beauty of many shots. The best the editing gets is when Passepartout gets drunk.

Lighting for outdoor enviroments is not to bad this episode, but inside it's the same lit by candles scenario. When its not, it shows how heavily cgi it actually is.

The cinematography is still really good throughout the whole episode.

Now the plot

I originally thought the episode was going to be fun hot air baloon shenanagins, but the baloon gets destroyed shortly into the episode. The episode is actually on board a train. For the first thirty minutes, the episode is extremely badly paced. Character scenes do nothing for the plot or characters here. Unless it's Phileas. Phileas is very well written throughout the whole episode. He constantly doubts himself and thinks that he is a fraud. He lost everything and this is his last hurrah in this terrible mid-life crisis of his. Passepartout is such a mixed bag here. He is even more charming, but all his characters subtetly is ruined by a certain scene. This certain scene is pulled out of someones ass. Fix is also a mixed bag here. She is more likable, but is kinda ruined by ruining the subtelty of Passepartout in a certain scene.

A lot of the first half is devoted to a side story which is really generic, but does help Phileas's character grow.

Now there were only eighteen minutes left in the episode and I didn't think it could get better, but it did. They finally discovered that character and plot can combine😲. I won't spoil anything from the end though. Just as one final thing, there is a new antagonistic force in the show since Fix is a protaganist here.

7.5/10 Decent.

High Adventure indeed
terrylarosa10 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While the first ep was entertaining, this one is outstanding. Much suspense as an earthquake almost destroys a bridge leaving crossing it unattainable until Fogg who no one believes in steps up and makes a desperate plan to save a young boy. Nothing better than when a person down on their luck finds the inner strength to achieve the impossible. Great acting by all but as usual Tennant who was a great Doctor and outstanding in the two different Broadchurch outings is simply superb as the once timid but no longer Fogg. Will look eagerly forward to the following eps and more high adventure.

Episode 2
Prismark1027 December 2021
The second episode concentrates more Phileas Fogg's unsuitability to be an explorer.

He has only been to two countries, France which he has just left and Italy that he is passing on a train.

A bad tempered Italian embarrasses Fogg. His son though inspires Fogg. When the lad is injured, Fogg sees a way for the train to pass a damaged bridge.

The episode builds Fogg's character. It also introduces some villainy. Fogg placed a wager with Nyle Bellamy that he can travel the world in 80 days.

Bellamy has money troubles, he needs Fogg to fail.

What's better than 'Magnificent?'
caroljude-5602010 January 2022
Suspense, intrigue, joy, sorrow, not one but TWO brilliant misfits, father/son drama, the appearance of a literary work that should quiet the hecklers, a metaphysical line constantly in danger of being crossed (but only if you're looking for it) and ultimately, impatient anticipation of the next installment.

I wasn't expecting to not be impressed but now that this is running here in the U. S. it's even better than imagined.

How did I think this would be boring retelling of a classic?
denesechristian-0116710 January 2022
The first episode was, imho, okay, but not something I would have chosen to watch over other programming; perhaps on re-broadcast.

But I tuned in for epi 2 and was really drawn into the story line, more by the actor who portrayed Alberto, Cristian De Vergori...

I predict he is going to be amazing and bring us many heartfelt, outstanding performances in what should be a multi-award winning career.

This is a rare show indeed - wonderful entertainment
EmilyTVandFilm2 January 2022
Having watched eps 3 & 4 tonight with another group of family members ranging from 12 to 84yrs (last week we were 15-75yrs), we were all agreed that there aren't enough big, beautiful family entertainment shows like this on our small screens any more and I felt compelled to add my (our) thoughts. I had already loved watching eps 1 and particularly 2 (where we were all on the edge of our seats) last week. Around the World in 80 Days seems to us a rare jewel of a show. It's a beautiful show to watch from the opening credits, the music, the costumes and glorious scenery in every episode - but also the terrific acting. Ibrahim Koma and Leonie Benesch are just brilliant (they just ARE Passepartout and Fix) and I now believe David Tennant is even more of a genius than I did already. He takes this repressed, stiff, wimpy and sometimes silly man and manages to make us see another side of the character - I marvel how much I root for Fogg, whilst laughing out loud at his peccadillos. In fact the show so far manages to be both really funny and then sometimes lump-in-the-throat moving. It feels unusually cinematic - there don't feel any corners cut in the production values. It drips with colour and flavour; I felt I was tasting the sandstorm and the dust of the Indian village. The guest characters are superb - Moretti the industrialist played by an Italian actor I was unfamiliar with, and Jane Digby tonight was absolutely marvellously played by Lindsay Duncan. It manages to feel completely of it's time 1872 - and yet so contemporary. So yes, it's a resounding 9 out of 10 from the extended family. I can't give it 10 because that's for Succession, Time and It's a Sin - but if I could give it 9.5 for being something super special in its own and very important right, I would. More television like this please. I haven't sat down to watch television with my 15 and 17 year old for some time. My 24 year old niece turned up on the doorstep to watch it with us tonight too. That feels just great. Thank you 80 Days!

Fogg Has Doubts There in Second Episode
shelbythuylinh10 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We show him as vulnerable and silly from the first episode over in the being stiff and not ever being out of the world or outside the USA

But now he has to use his brawn and brain combined with Abagail Fix and Passepartout's help there. Both are having such a huge sparks there that could go from friends to much more.

As Fogg must prove to an arrogant widower with a very smart son he is worth traveling and worth something as the train they are on hits rocky roads.

We see Fogg very heroic there. Despite nearly risking and possibly losing his life and that of his traveling companions.

Really ignore the haters!

Heightened Though Cliched
Hitchcoc2 February 2022
Since I've given up on this following the book, I'm judging it episode by episode, knowing that there is going to be a second season. Could be endless. Still, there is a lot of action and Tennant is very good. We are set up for the next episode in serial style. The chemistry among the three principle characters is growing so this is a pivotal part of the story.

Around the World in at least 40 episodes
owen-watts31 December 2021
It became clear during the torturous third and fourth day depicted here that Fogg's journey is going to be a very very bloated one and not the rollicking adventure of the book. Obviously things have to be changed from the source material but the wild contrivance of invented dramatic scenarios that resolve in each episode feels really silly. I can't imagine at this pace it'll end this series, let alone this decade. I imagine poor ancient Tennant, quivering over the finish line "god those eighty days have taken their toll, Fogg".

What a load of tosh
Phil-2839 March 2022
Insert leading female character...check Insert black character where one does not exist.....check Make male white character insipid, weak, and boring...check.

Ruin a great story.... Check Well ticks all the BBC boxes for the 21st century.

I'm afraid this is what we get from now on.

Adventure?
elli569 January 2022
Episode I was better than middling and i thought lets give it another go and hopefully it'll kick on and turn into the grand adventure that it is(well the book was anywsy!)

Oh dear, how dreary everybody is, feeling sorry for themselves, not one redeeming came of this episode, dreary and dire, devoid of all adventure and escapism which is so lacking....
