- Patty and Tom run into a brick wall when trying to get information from the Antiguan bank. Working with Ellen, they focus on trying to find Carol Tobin, who has mysteriously vanished. Tom turns to Barry the homeless man who lives in the neighborhood where Carol was last seen. Having run into Michael Hewes and his pregnant girlfriend in a department store, Ellen innocently congratulates Patty on her soon becoming a grandmother. Patty is soon after her son's companion. Arthur Frobisher tries to get a well-known movie star to be the front man for his new renewable energy venture. In a flash-forward 3 months into the future, Ellen is interrogated by the police where she reveals her and Tom's personal plans.—garykmcd
- Someone wearing sunglasses and gloves drives a car and braces themselves to crash into Patty. We see her after the accident get out and find no one in the driver's seat.
At the police station, Detective Noonan tells Ellen about Patty's accident, puzzling out loud, and for effect, about the fact that the car that hit Patty was registered to Tom. Noonan asks Ellen's thoughts on the matter.
Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) gives a speech at a cocktail party about the Whirlwind Initiative, talking about his new desire to "do good" and the "gospel of wind power." He thanks people who have donated to the organization and singles out a Hollywood actor named Terry (Craig Bierko).
At Patty's apartment, Tessa Marchetti gives Tom and Patty everything that she got from the bank, including her personal statements. She says she doesn't know how it could be connected to the Tobins, but she'll help however she can.
Patty asks Tessa where she spent last Thanksgiving - with a friend upstate, not with her mom. They got in a fight and Danielle spent it alone.
The Antiguan bank guy Emmanuel meets with Zedeck, Lenny and Joe Tobin, telling them he'll keep Patty from seeing what's in the account. After Emmanuel leaves, Zedeck reassures Lenny and Joe that the banking laws will protect them.
Lenny warns Zedeck to be careful since the DA is looking into the murder of Danielle Marchetti. But Zedeck didn't do it. And neither did Joe. So who did?
Cut to Carol Tobin (who actually did kill Danielle).
Then back to Marilyn Tobin, freaking out to Lenny that she can't find her daughter. He assures her he'll have someone find her.
Emmanuel meets with Patty and Tom at their office. He tells them Tessa only has two personal accounts and he'll help them look for others. After he leaves, Patty and Tom agree Emmanuel is going to be no help.
They meet with Ellen, who asks them to find Carol.
Cut to Carol in what looks like an apartment, talking to someone we can't see and thanking them for bringing her there. "I feel much safer," she says.
Ellen shops in a baby store and runs into Michael and his cougar baby mama Jill. She manages to get out a congratulations. Michael gives her a card for his upcoming art show.
When Ellen walks away, Michael reassures Jill that Ellen won't tell his mom, thinking she's another person Patty pushed away.
The security woman Lenny hired updates him on Joe, saying he hasn't been drinking and has been going to meetings. He mentions that they can't find Carol. Lenny mentions Carol's bad dating history, shady boyfriends and two ex-husbands.
As she's leaving, Lenny asks if she's married. She coldly shuts him down by asking why he wants to know.
Joe and his wife talk in his hotel room. She mentions how hard it's been. Joe has something for her. He shows her two wrapped stacks of cash. His wife is nervous about taking it, but Joe assures her it's a gift and OK to accept.
Frobisher sucks up to Terry the actor, raving about his movies. He tells Terry he wants to make a splash with webisodes, PSAs, commercials for his wind initiatives. He wants a recognizable face. Terry suggests Arthur himself, but he says he looks horrible on camera. "I look like Frankenstein," he says.
Terry tells him he can't commit that kind of time and Frobisher tries not to act hurt. Terry notices Frobisher's memoir laying on the table, "The Long and Windy Road" - windy as in wind, not winding. Arthur says it was surprisingly easy to write.
Marilyn frets to Joe about Carol.
At Ellen's place, Tom briefs Ellen and Patty on Carol's running away habit. Her cell phone is hitting a tower in Brooklyn.
Ellen tells Patty she ran into Michael and shows her the card for the art show. Ellen congratulates Patty on Jill's pregnancy. Clearly news to Patty, but she pretends she knew.
At Michael's art show -- called "Emancipation" -- Patty pulls up in a car outside and peers at Michael and Jill. She leaves.
Tom drops by Ellen's and they go to find Carol in Brooklyn.
Arthur gets shot down by more actors to be his spokesman. He thinks his image is the problem, but he's undeterred.
At Patty's apartment, Jill politely asks Patty why she asked her there. Patty tells Jill about trying to stay out of Michael's life and her plans to stop that now. She mentions Jill's ex-husband and the fact he has sole custody of her two daughters and that Colorado deemed her an unfit mother.
Patty says she won't tell Michael about her past and pulls out her checkbook. Jill turns her down. "Consider this the carrot," Patty says, "you don't want the stick."
Ellen and Tom grab coffee and he tells her things with his wife are bad and she's not handling it well. "Turns out losing 70 percent of your net worth strains a marriage, who knew?"
Ellen thinks Tom's not telling Patty about the money because he'd seem weak. He asks why she doesn't come back to the firm. She says she needs her distance. Tom suddenly remembers he knows someone who lives in the area.
They go visit Barry the homeless guy. He says he doesn't recognize a picture of Carol. Tom gives Barry $100 to keep an eye out.
3 Months Later Noonan lays out his car accident puzzle for Ellen, including finding Tom dead and her purse in a Dumpster. Noonan asks if she was involved with Tom. "Tom and I were starting a law firm together," Ellen says.
Arthur grabs lunch with Terry. Terry loved Arthur's book. He wants to option it. Frobisher is dubious. And Terry wants to play him. Finally Terry says if he gets the rights, he'll be his pitchman. Frobisher is intrigued.
Tom tells Ellen about Barry the homeless guy finding Louis Tobin's boots and Danielle Marchetti's phone in a Dumpster. Tom thinks it was to cover up Thanksgiving.
The security woman gives Lenny the address where Carol's been staying. He recognizes it.
Michael and Jill stroll down the street and she asks him if he's sure he wants "this." He figures out that Ellen talked to his mom and asks if she called Jill. She says no and says she just wants him to be sure.
Lenny goes to the place Carol is staying in Brooklyn. Barry sees him. Carol lets him in. Joe's already there.
Lenny's upset because the apartments are in his name and thinks Joe should have told him. He asks why Joe is hiding Carol. "Because Zedeck didn't kill Danielle."
3 Weeks Earlier Carol and Joe try to figure out why Danielle pleaded the fifth. Carol wants to know what they can do about her. Joe gives Carol the vial their dad used to kill himself. Cut to Carol visiting Danielle and then disposing of the vial.
Back in Brooklyn, Lenny is pissed. Joe didn't want the DA to get to Carol so he hid her.
Barry calls Tom, telling him "he" came back - the guy who threw away the boots and cell phone. He saw him do it.
Thanksgiving night A man in a suit, wearing gloves, throws away a trash bag full of stuff in a Dumpster. It's Lenny. Barry watches from his cardboard hut.
3 Months Later Tom rifles through the Brooklyn apartment, putting Patty off on the phone. There's a pounding on the door. It's Lenny, there to give Tom a bag of money. "It's all here," Lenny says, "I'm a man of my word."
