Long before she directed the summer comedy The To Do List, Maggie Carey was a Division I soccer player at the University of Montana. That was back in the 1990s, when for the first time in her life, she had a female coach.
“It was really refreshing to see a woman in a leadership role and that kind of clicked with me – maybe there was something missing that I wasn’t aware of. And I think seven of the girls went on to coach,” Carey says.
Now, as a film director, Carey finds herself at the helm in a profession also historically dominated by men.

This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. While the new comedy The To Do List just opened in near-wide release, it’s not playing everywhere. For those of you who can’t go see it yet, I offer you a little alternative in the form of 2007′s The Jeannie Tate Show. It’s not the official short start for either Aubrey Plaza (who had already appeared in Killswitch and In Love) or writer-director Maggie Carey (who’d helmed the short PBS doc Sun River Homestead and a few short comedies, including Jenny Clone with her then-soon-to-be husband Bill Hader). It’s not even technically a short so much as a web series made up of very short episodes. Still, it’s fun to see the beginnings of a relationship that would eventually lead to now-famous Plaza starring in Carey...

Today’s film is the 2005 short Jenny Clone. The film features the voices of Bill Hader and Maggie Carey, the latter of whom also edited, wrote, and directed the film. Carey is an experienced member of the industry, with a 12-year career that includes creating The Jeannie Tate Show and writing and directing for Funny or Die Presents…. Carey makes the jump to the big screen with her feature film writing and directing debut, titled The To Do List, which opens in wide release in American theatres this weekend.

Heading into Us cinemas this weekend, The To Do List has all the promise of being one of the funniest films of the year, with the ever-brilliant Aubrey Plaza front and centre as the young lead.
The comedy has been likened to as quintessential a teen (gross-out) comedy as American Pie, and that really speaks for itself. So if you’re looking for a comedy alternative in American cinemas this weekend, opening opposite the action fare of The Wolverine, then The To Do List looks like a very strong bet. And as the film heads into theatres, CBS have released a great new red-band supercut trailer, via Yahoo Movies, to give you a helpful little nudge.
Set in 1993, valedictorian Brandy Klark wants to shed her uptight image before college, so she assembles a to do list of all the “activities” she missed out on in high school. Quickly realizing that...

Aubrey Plaza is no one trick pony. In fact, in this Friday's "The To Do List," she proves that she has all kinds of versatile skills up her sleeve in the role of Brandy Klark, an ambitious, self-serious, college-bound valedictorian who feels she has a little bit more learning to do before she heads off to college. She may have received sex ed in school but her practical experience is lacking, to say the least. Armed with a Trapper Keeper containing a filthy list of sex acts and very little know-how, Brandy sets out to get it — and herself — done before college. Summa cum laude, indeed.
Playing Brandy is a departure from Plaza's usual gig as scowly April Ludgate on NBC's "Parks and Recreation" — and even from her most high-profile film gig thus far, "Safety Not Guaranteed." NextMovie caught up with Plaza on a rooftop in San Diego's Gaslamp District...

Beverly Hills, Calif. — Aubrey Plaza had to overcome a few fears in the R-rated comedy "The To Do List" – including doing a number of hilariously awkward sex scenes. But the 29-year-old actress says she's anything but brave.
"I'm fearful every day of my life. Every moment of life is full of fear," the "Parks and Recreation" star said in her usual deadpan manner. "But you know when I was shooting this movie I had a lot of support and the cast was so funny ... so I just kind of looked fear in the face."
Plaza plays Brandy Klark, an overachieving high school graduate, in the coming-of-age comedy set in 1990s Boise, Idaho, who tries to complete a sexual to-do list before heading off to college.
"Looking back on it, I feel like the masturbating scene was a little bit the most nerve-racking. Just because in my head I thought, `Oh,...

In the upcoming comedy The To Do List, Aubrey Plaza stars as high school senior Brandy Klark, a sheltered Idaho teenager who’s making a valiant — and very type-a — effort to lose her virginity to the town’s hottest pool employee by the end of the summer.
The title’s list consists of sex acts that lead up to the big event, many of which Brandy doesn’t have a great idea (yet…) of what they really mean. Check out an exclusive clip from the film below, to get a quick glimpse of what we’re talking about:

From hipster crush on the Us comedy scene to making it big with her first major film role: deadpan TV star Aubrey Plaza talks frankly about having a stroke, working with Charlie Sheen and why she's nothing like her character in Parks And Recreation
When Aubrey Plaza opens the door of her new house in the foothills of Los Angeles' trendy Los Feliz neighbourhood one rainy late afternoon in November, she is dressed for a cosy night in: leggings, over-sized sweatshirt, slippers.
With her Betty Boop pout and deadpan delivery, the Delaware-born daughter of Puerto Rican and Irish parents has been a hipster crush since she exploded on to the Us comedy scene in 2009 with roles as a stand-up comedian in Judd Apatow's Funny People and as a surly city government employee in the NBC mockumentary sitcom Parks And Recreation (coming to BBC4 next year). But Plaza has never...

For NBC comedy enthusiasts, "The To Do List" is basically fanfic come to life. The R-rated indie stars Aubrey Plaza as a recent high school graduate who makes a list of sexual acts she wants to engage in before heading to college. (Hence the title.) That means the "Parks and Recreation" star gets into a variety of compromising positions, including one with "Community" co-star Donald Glover. When worlds collide, etc.
Written and directed by Maggie Carey, "The To Do List" features a cavalcade of beloved stars: Plaza and Glover are joined by Alia Shawkat (Maeby!), Rachel Bilson, Andy Samberg, Scott Porter (Jason Street!), Connie Britton (Mrs. Coach!), Clark Gregg, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Johnny Simmons, Sarah Steele and Bill Hader, Carey's real-life husband. This marks Carey's second collaboration with Plaza; the director created the hilarious web series "The Jeannie Tate Show," which featured Plaza as a sullen teenager.

Would you buy a ticket at your local theater (or rent a DVD, or VOD) to watch a movie called 'The Hand Job'? And no, it's not about life as a hand model or some kind of weird mannequin-related caper film. It's a comedy about a young woman who graduates high school and decides she needs to learn about sexual activities before college, including the one in the title.
'The Hand Job' isn't a movie yet. It currently only exists as a screenplay from writer Maggie Carey ('The Jeannie Tate Show'), unattached to any studio or production company. The screenplay made Franklin Leonard's 2009 "Black List" of top-notch unproduced screenplays, and the Austin Film Festival decided to see what all the fuss was about. The fest held a staged script reading on Sunday, with 15 actors and actresses reading the roles and narration. The talent included Jessica Alba,...

In the comedy world there are few institutions that have defied the fickle tastes of fans and tragically cut short careers of top stars. The Upright Citizens Brigade, or Ucb as everyone says these days, is arguably the leader of a pack that counts outfits like Groundlings, Acme and ImprovOlympic amongst its peers. Its humble beginnings out of Chicago’s improv scene with young comedians—Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh and Amy Poehler—deciding in 1990 to form a sketch comedy and improv theater, turned into a multi-city institution that would have its own TV show, comedy school and nightly sold-out shows. Eventually the rise of internet video have a profound effect on rising comedians, and Ucb started encouraging more of its rising talent to create short one-off sketches and eventually full web series through its video hub at UCBcomedy.com. We took note of a number of their early...

Attention, "30 Rock" producers: Should you need a thoroughly deadpan sidekick for perky page Kenneth, look no further than Aubrey Plaza. Before she nabbed roles on "Parks and Recreation" and in the upcoming film "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," the emerging comedic talent did time as a real-life NBC page."I was not good at it," confesses Plaza, who appeared briefly on "30 Rock" as, you guessed it, a page. "To be a good page, you have to have this cheerleader mentality, which really works for some people. Most of the job is giving those studio tours to, like, 30 tourists, and I was always taking those as opportunities to do a weird character."A firm grasp on weird characters paid off much later, when Plaza landed a trio of career-making roles during a single Los Angeles visit. In addition to the "Scott Pilgrim" and "Parks and Recreation" gigs, Plaza also nabbed a...

If you've created and run one of most successful comedy series of all time, what do you do for an encore?
"Everybody Loves Raymond's" Phil Rosenthal has little time to contemplate that. Three-and-a-half years after his series left the CBS airwaves, he has three projects in the works at HBO and a sitcom set up at the BBC. Oh, and he's writing a feature for Universal. And a play.
To top it off, he's shepherding a Russian version of "Raymond" and making a feature documentary about it.
"The business is terrible right now, so like everybody else I had to diversify," Rosenthal said.
At HBO, which co-produced "Raymond," he is in talks about a comedy, "The Jeannie Tate Show"; a drama, "Random Family"; and a movie about 1960s Freedom Riders.
"Jeannie" is based on the WB.com digital series created by Liz Cackowski and Maggie Carey that stars former...
