Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker A.B. Shawky makes his feature directorial debut with “Yomeddine,” an underdog story about an outsider who sets out to make sense of the world that refuses to accept him as he is. The film had its world premiere in competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and was the official Egyptian entry for foreign language film consideration at the 91st Academy Awards.
Acquired by Strand Releasing (all North American rights), “Yomeddine” is now set to open later this month in New York and Los Angeles.
The film’s plot follows Beshay — a man cured of leprosy — who has never left the leper colony in the Egyptian desert where he has lived since childhood. Following the death of his wife, he decides to go in search of his roots and confront the world, with his modest possessions strapped to a donkey cart and a traveling companion named Obama, an outcast...

It took a long journey before Egyptian-Austrian director Abu Bakr Shawky managed to bring his unconventional road movie “Yomeddine,” which is Egypt’s candidate for the foreign-language Oscar, to the big screen.
This ultimately uplifting drama in which a middle-aged man raised in a leper colony embarks with a sidekick and a donkey on a journey across Egypt to try to reconnect with his family was tough to finance and shoot. But Shawky and producer Dina Emam’s efforts paid off handsomely in May when “Yomeddine” world-premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, a rare case of a first feature making the fest’s official competition cut. Shawky, who is an NYU Film School graduate and the recipient of Variety’s Mena Talent of the Year Award, spoke to Variety during the Cairo Film Festival about the impressive progression of his unique labor of love and how he chose,...

Joe Diffie, “Quit You”
Joe Diffie has fallen off the love wagon, unable to resist the pull of an addictive relationship. “I can crush it out, pour it down the drain, give up my vices, curse your name,” he sings, rattling off a number of defenses that, in the end, can’t convince him to quit the one he loves.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Joaquin Cociña and Cristóbal León's The Wolf House (2018), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from October 19 – November 17, 2018 as a Special Discovery.La casa lobo (The Wolf House), a debut feature film from the duo of Chilean filmmakers Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León, who previously worked together on shorts, is a decidedly adult stop-motion animation, whose psychological portent is mysterious and dense, while its imaginative use of puppetry and bold animated design creates a world entirely its own, relatively rarely seen in contemporary cinema. The historical background of The Wolf House, which opens with sweeping language, like a fairytale, is vague. But it’s a known fact that South America was the preferred hideout for the Nazis after World War II, and it’s hard not to think of this context at the...

"No crime. No poverty. No unemployment. The state of our union is strong." Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, Rupert Wyatt's Captive State explores the lives on both sides of the conflict - the collaborators and the dissidents. The first trailer for the blockbuster science fiction film has dropped from Focus Features and it looks like a big budget version of the USA network TV show The Colony where the story is less about humans fighting aliens and more about how different people cope and survive in the wake of such an occupation. The cast strong and features many big names including Vera Farmiga, Madeline Brewer, John Goodman, Alan Ruck, Kevin J. O'Connor, James Ransone, Jonathan...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by one of the members of the cast. Director/writer: Christopher-Lee dos Santos Cast: Sean Cameron Michael, Suraya Santos, Brandon Auret, Jonathan Pienaar and Ryan Kruger. Broken Darkness is a post-apocalyptic title, from South Africa. Previously titled Last Broken Darkness, this film was shot by director Christopher-Lee dos Santos. Broken Darkness stars: Sean Cameron Michael ("Black Sails"), Brandon Auret (Elysium), Suraya Santos and Jonathan Pienaar. Much of the film takes place after a devastating meteorite strike; survivors must live below ground, or face the radiation and infection above. For the first hour, everything story-wise comes across well. Then, the tone shifts from a serious dramatic thriller to an overly sombre series of scenes. This shift, in tone, is a bit disconcerting. Also, somewhat reminiscent of Jeff Renfroe's The Colony (2013) and John Hillcoat's The Road (2009), Broken Darkness brings the.

Beshay (Rady Gamal) is one of the most distinctive characters in recent cinema: a man afflicted by leprosy, traveling across Egypt after his wife’s death to find his long-lost relatives. The best thing about writer-director A.B. Shawky’s feature-length debut — the only debut in competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival — is the way it burrows inside Beshay’s life without devolving into a pity party.
Gamal, a genuine discovery who serves as the key to the movie’s emotional core, delivers a tender, heartwarming performance that sits well with Shawky’s naturalistic style. He’s complimented by another newcomer, Ahmed Abedelhafiz, playing orphaned adolescent Obama, who accompanies Beshay on his journey. Together, the pair transform the gimmicky connotations of a buddy movie about being ostracized into, well, a decent buddy movie.
Shawky’s breezy plot plays like a Middle Eastern answer to Italian neorealism, peering beyond the most obvious...

A man who has recovered from leprosy goes in search of the father who abandoned him in a sentimental drama that infantilises its lead character
Yomeddine (the title means “day of judgement” in Arabic) is a gentle, but persistently sugary road movie, set in Egypt. There is a streak of sentimentality – with which I have no real problem – but also a kind of infantilisation.
Beshay is a man who has recovered from leprosy, but left with extensive scarring: he makes cash by scavenging for sellable items from the local garbage dump. Bashay is played with relaxed candour and without prosthetics by non-professional Rady Gamal. The feature was in fact developed by the director Ab Shawky from his earlier documentary short entitled The Colony, about the Abu Zaabal leper colony, just outside Cairo. Bashay has been raised in the colony as a Christian, and evidently married to a woman who has...

An Egyptian leper and his young orphan friend journey south in search of family in debuting director A.B. Shawky’s lovingly made road trip movie, “Yomeddine.” Anchored by lead Rady Gamal’s warm-hearted charisma, the film is a sweet, solid first feature marbled with genuinely touching moments that make up for times when the siren call of sentimentality becomes a little too loud. Shawky, a relative unknown within the Egyptian filmmaking community and an NYU graduate, shows a sure hand with his non-professional actors and, together with Argentinian cinematographer Federico Cesca, demonstrates a fine compositional eye. However, Cannes’ decision to put it in competition puts a tremendous amount of pressure on “Yomeddine” that it might not be able to bear, which is a shame as it’s an enjoyable character-driven drama that could please international audiences.

If you haven't yet watched this wonderful series, Colony Season 3 Episode 1 is a great place to pick it up if you don't want to wade your way through all of the incredible stuff you missed during the first two seasons.
Honestly, it's not a free pass you're getting to forget that those seasons existed, but I assume there are still some people who don't have the heart to sit through 19.5 full hours of television (which is what you get without commercials).
The Colony Season 3 premiere is more of a catch-up and welcome back than it is an exciting hour for long-time viewers. Maybe those Ltv will disagree with me, but my assessment follows.
Having the Bowman family back is fantastic.
There is a modest time jump revealing they have been living happily as their version of the Swiss Family Robinson while they try to figure out how to meet up...

Determined to find the truth, Saxon sets out on a path of revenge, to bring her killers to justice. A few promotional items have released for Juggernaut. The film's first poster is shown here. Read More: Watch: Demon Kids Come Out to Play in Sinister 'Hellions' Trailer After its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the horror film "Hellions," from writer Pascal Trottier ("The Colony") and director Bruce McDonald ("Pontypool"), is sure to inspire much excitement and terror just in time for Halloween this year. The film stars Chloe Rose, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter DaCunha, Luke Bilyk and Robert Patrick. The official film synopsis reads: "A teenager’s Halloween night turns into a terrifying fight to survive when trick-or-treaters from Hell show up at her doorstep. After getting the unwelcome news that she’s pregnant, 17-year-old Dora (Chloe Rose) just wants to stay in on Halloween. But then a knock at the door delivers a gaggle of pint-sized demons after one thing: Dora’s baby. Director Bruce McDonald unleashes a hallucinatory visual and auditory assault that propels 'Hellions' to.

Director: Bruce McDonald. Writer: Pascal Trottier. Cast: Chloe Rose, Robert Patrick, Rossif Sutherland and Rachel Wilson. Hellions was developed by two brilliant minds. Bruce McDonald was the director of the very tense zombie film Pontypool (2009), starring Stephen McHattie. Pascal Trottier wrote one of this film fans favourite scripts - from 2013, with The Colony. However, the imagination and creativity is mostly missing in this Halloween set thriller. Barely a horror film, Hellions lacks any complex scenes and action elements are almost completely forgotten. Much of the film simply follows Dora (Chloe Rose) through one setting, until the eyelids grow heavy and the stop button beckons. Hellions belongs at the bottom of the DVD store shelf. The story is not inventive. Dora is a young woman struggling with teen pregnancy. She looks forlorn in many of her early scenes. But, events pick-up when the trick-or-treaters come out, on Halloween. They come knocking on Dora's home,...

Bruce McDonald is a name with whom few readers will likely associate with anything, but for those few of us who do, we know this Canadian-born filmmaker has some under-appreciated talent. Perhaps his best-known film, McDonald wowed genre film fans in 2008 with his groundbreaking Pontypool. Since then, rumors and theories about a follow-up sequel have endured endless revivals in smaller circles of horror fandom. So, despite having a few lesser-known non-horror films to his name since 2008, I and others were excited to see McDonald return to horror just in time for Halloween.
Hellions is McDonald’s latest film, written by Pascal Trottier, best known for screenwriting The Colony (2013), combines McDonald’s unconventional storytelling sense and Trottier’s knack for cerebral flair. The film stars Chloe Rose as Dora Vogel, an apathetic teenager who unexpectedly discovers she’s pregnant and must survive Halloween night when her home is invaded my trick...

Ex-m-15 Spook Richard Armitage and current MI6 agent Naomie Harris are joining forces for Clearance, an East African-set action-drama that will call on their field skills. The story has Armitage’s salty mine clearer and his pregnant wife (Harris) being kidnapped in South Sudan. The pair manage to make their escape, only to find themselves forced to navigate a deadly minefield. Presumably this will be without access to all the usual tools of the trade, unless the kidnappers have happily left them lying around. Which would be incompetent kidnapping.UMedia is shopping the movie around the Cannes film market. “We don’t see many scripts as strong as Clearance: a smart action film, set against an interesting, topical background,” says Peter Rogers, head of the film group. "It’s a tense, thrilling and emotionally hard-hitting story that we think audiences will love.”Behind the camera is Finnish director Aku Louhimies whose Tolstoy adaptation,...

Stars: Laurence Fishburne, Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Jeffrey Grover, Lin Shaye, Robert Longstreet | Written by Carlyle Eubank, William Eubank, David Frigerio | Directed by William Eubank
Nothing to do with the no-budget semi-zombie horror film of the same name, frequently found populating the shelves of Poundland and cheapo DVD outlets everywhere; The Signal is a classy Laurence Fishburne joint, casting the big man as a government agent on the trail of bionically superpowered kids and the titular alien (?) signal.
District 9, Chronicle and Catfish (yes, really) are among the unlikely points of reference here, being a story in which a group of pretty young teenagers take off on a roadtrip in search of an elusive Internet figure who lures them out into the middle of nowhere. Once there, things get pretty weird, leaving young Ms sufferer Nic (Brenton Thwaites) waking up in a mysterious government facility, separated from his best pal and girlfriend.

If you’ve read my Top 10 Movies of 2014 list, you’ll know I proclaimed the vast amount of really good movies released this year but for all the good movies, there has to be some bad… And the bad were Really bad this year. From unfunny comedies to weird vanity projects that were seemingly made just for friends and family of the film makers attached, to some truly awful horror movies it seems that 2014 will be marked by some truly terrible films – some of which made it to the big screen!
The criteria is the same as my “best of” list: it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut, or a new movie that I’ve seen at a film festival that might not necessarily have been distributed as of yet. Also, the cut off...

Director Gavin Michael Booth has released two clips for his upcoming film The Scarehouse. This film, which was shot in Windsor, Ontario, involves a group of sorority sisters and revenge. This film has recently been completed. D Films will distribute this title in Canada and the film will have its World Premiere in Windsor, this October 5th. The two clips, titled "I Can Still See Some Fat" and "Try More Clothes" are below. This tale of revenge begins with six sorority sisters. These friends show up at a haunted attraction, which is being run by a couple of their former club members. And, this attraction has been rigged - for murder! Understandably, this film has a large female cast. The cast includes a few regulars of the horror genre. The film stars Sarah Booth (Deadfall) and Kimberly-Sue Murray (The Colony). As well, Dani Barker and Teagan Vincze star. Fans of...

The Killing was an American remake from AMC based on the nordic noir show popularised over here by showings on BBC 4. The Us version moved things to Seattle where it rained constantly and revolved around the murder of Rosie Larson. Unfairly compared to Twin Peaks when it debuted, it was nonetheless something of a hit on Channel 4 for at least two seasons. I lost track of it around the mid-point of season two, not because I didn’t like it, I enjoyed it lots despite its grimness but it became impossible to keep up with the weekly scheduled showings and 4Od was, and still is not very good. From what I hear season two wrapped up the murder of Larson and season three moved on to a new mystery which was just as gripping.

Scrambled Transmission: Eubank’s Sophomore Effort Relies on Visual Strengths
William Eubank expands his brand of cerebral sci-fi with sophomore effort, The Signal, following up from the 2011 space set debut, Love (which might be interesting to revisit after the success of Gravity). With incredible ingenuity, this lo-fi concept is showcased within an amazing visual design, and the fantastic look of the film blends perfectly with a creepy and unnerving set-up. However, about mid-way through our main characters’ ordeal, substance begins to feel a bit eschewed for style, the narrative hitting a rather stale plateau as it coasts to a dramatic third act with a compounded twist that would have seemed more effective had there been sharper development of its ideas.
Three college students are on a road trip across the Southwest on a mysterious mission to track down a computer genius that hacked into MIT’s security system, something which...

★★☆☆☆Jeff Renfroe's The Colony (2013) paints a bleak picture of humanity's future; a post-apocalyptic world where climate change has left the Earth shrouded in a permanent deluge of ice and snow. Starring Kevin Zegers and nineties action movie luminaries Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton, what at first promises to be a taut survival procedural soon reveals itself to be a far darker and carnivorous beast. Deep under the frozen Earth's surface, Sam (Zegers) and what's left of his dwindling human colony scrape by on meagre rations, dreaming of a global thaw that will lead to their ultimate return to the land above.

10. Poltergeist
Directed by Gil Kenan
Written by David Lindsay-Abaire
USA
Release Date: November 14th
Production recently wrapped on the Poltergeist remake with Gil Kenan (Monster House) in the director’s chair and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) producing. Little is known as they continue to put the movie together in post-production, but we do have a few details, beginning with the cast which includes Sam Rockwell (Moon), Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris. We are also told that the psychic Angina (played originally by Zelda Rubinstein), isn’t going to be revived for the remake. Instead, they are replacing her character with a team of paranormal experts. Based on a vague plot summary, it sounds like the central plot points of the original movie are intact but other characters are added in, such as Carrigan Burke, a host of a TV show called Haunted House Cleaners, who stands in as the movie’s skeptic.

Stars: Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton, Kevin Zegars | Written and Directed by Jeff Renfroe
Forced underground by the next ice-age, the inhabitants of Colony 7 struggle to survive below the world s frozen surface. When they mysteriously lose contact with Colony 5, the only other known settlement, Briggs (Fishburne) decides to lead a dangerous mission into the frozen wasteland determined to discover their fate. When he and his team reach their destination, they discover a threat much worse than nature and must battle to save themselves and protect their fellow colonists in what might be humanity s last stand.
A new horror film, starring Bill Paxton and also featuring Laurence Fishburne? Has to be on to a winner right? The Colony was advertised as a “The Thing” style horror, with plenty of snow bound terrors within. Instead we get a badly paced, poorly acted, sub-par Ghosts of Mars rip-off set in a post-apocalyptic ice age.

Does The Colony have action? A fair bit, yes, and it’s fairly well done all things considered. Does it have a good cast? Pretty good thanks to Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton in supporting positions. What it doesn’t have is an ounce of sense. Set in a world that has descended into an eternal winter which forced the remaining vestiges of humanity into secluded underground encampments, The Colony features characters and antagonists that are either blindly foolish or oddly and inexplicably savage with no real explanation as for why. Director and writer Jeff Renfroe just hopes you won’t notice once the film kicks into high gear and the film because a series of chases through tunnels and frozen wastelands. And the pounding soundtrack almost helps it succeed, but eventually during the film you stop and ask, “Hey, why can’t these cannibals communicate beyond growls and grunts?...
